CHICAGO -- March 22, 2012 – At the 61st Meeting of the American College of Cardiology in Chicago next week, GE Healthcare is introducing Centricity* Cardio Enterprise, a new and comprehensive IT solution that offers cardiologists a single point of access to patient data, images and reports across the continuum of care while enhancing physician productivity and improving charge capture accuracy. Centricity Cardio Enterprise enables the cardiovascular care area with configurable workflow, tools, and reports that can be shared across multiple facilities and organizations.
Cardiologists can be more mobile than ever before using Centricity Cardio Enterprise. HIPAA-Compliant Document Management Solution Expands Into Global Market by Migrating to Windows Azure Cloud Platform
PaperTracer attracts international customers by migrating to Windows Azure to store, organize and safeguard its sensitive information in security-enhanced Microsoft global datacenters.
REDMOND, Wash. — March 20, 2012 — PaperTracer, a Jacksonville, Fla.-based document-management service that assures compliance with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) of 1996, has moved to the Windows Azure cloud platform to deliver its services to customers worldwide. By backing its HIPAA compliance with the security features of Microsoft Corp. datacenters, PaperTracer expects to boost revenues by 30 percent in the first year alone.
A subsidiary of Health Asset Management Inc. (HAMi), PaperTracer adopted cloud-computing technologies early on, delivering its Web-based solution as a service since its founding in 1999. For the past decade, PaperTracer has managed and maintained a server infrastructure that it hosted in a dedicated private cloud environment through a third-party provider in Florida.
PaperTracer wanted to expand its business overseas but found that potential international customers viewed its single-location¸ U.S.-based infrastructure as a concern. “When customers are storing sensitive information such as patient data or intellectual property, they want to know that their data is stored locally,” said Michael Tarpley, CEO of HAMi. “Customers located outside the U.S. were not inclined to use PaperTracer.”
The company resolved to move its services to a public cloud model, eventually narrowing the field to Windows Azure. “The decision to move to Windows Azure was an easy one,” said Keith Hoot, the company’s chief technology officer. “Not only does Microsoft offer security-enhanced global datacenters, but also its brand is recognized as synonymous with reliability.”
Working with Microsoft partner Arth Systems, PaperTracer migrated to Windows Azure in April 2011. It hosts its application in Web roles in Windows Azure for background processing tasks and uses Microsoft SQL Azure for data storage. Using Windows Azure, the company packages its application and deploys it to the Microsoft datacenter nearest the customer’s location.
PaperTracer recently created a variant that enables small and midsize businesses to take advantage of fast deployment on Windows Azure. Announced as 2EZData in November 2011, the solution is similar to PaperTracer and includes the same HIPAA-compliant features, such as activity-logging at the file level, role-based access controls, and forced password changes and logouts after periods of inactivity.
By the end of 2011, the company had two customers in the U.S. and one in India using PaperTracer on Windows Azure. It also had 15 customers in the pipeline for 2EZData, many of which are located in India and other overseas locations. “If it weren’t for using Windows Azure, we would not have closed the deal with our PaperTracer customer in India,” said Rajashree Varma, the director of Global Alliance at HAMi.
PaperTracer has traditionally provided customers the HIPAA-compliant features they require in a records management solution, but today it offers the service on a security-enhanced infrastructure that customers trust worldwide. With the previous infrastructure, it took a week or longer to procure the hardware and software required to get a customer up and running. On Windows Azure, PaperTracer can allocate compute and storage resources quickly, onboarding new customers in one or half a day.
But Tarpley reiterated that trust is the key factor in connecting with international customers. “They see the Microsoft name, and they know that everything has been put in place to help safeguard their data,” he said. “That’s invaluable for our continued success.”

This solution from BMC Software (NASDAQ: BMC, the recognized leader in Business Service Management (BSM), has resulted in a 50 percent improvement in operational and manpower efficiencies.
 
BMC is successfully expanding its footprint in the medical service sector in Taiwan, and its relationship with VGHKS exemplifieshow medical centers and hospitals are deriving benefits from BMC solutions. These solutions help ensure efficient and safe execution of thousands of complex scheduled jobs every day as well as management of huge amounts of data connected by complex relationships in the ecosystem of medical services environments.

Established in 1990, VGHKS has won public praise and recognition over the past two decades. However, its continuous growth, and the fact that it is the only public hospital in Southern Taiwan has also given rise to new challenges to the hospital’s IT system. Its IT team has had to manage an immensity of data and complexity of workflow processes that need access to statistics about the hospital, patients, daily revenues from all departments, changes in surgery priorities and duty shifts for more than 580 doctors and over 1,700 nurses and staff, and even specific details on particular diseases.
 
Facing increasing pressure to deliver faster and error-free IT performance, the VGHKS IT team’s most crucial problem was that its existing management system was unable to integrate with the mainframe host. This was because 80 to 90 percent of the hospital’s data is stored on the mainframe, while the applications run on the hospital’s open systems*. It could not seamlessly operate with those open systems on which all the applications were running. To solve the challenge, VGHKS sought a new automated solution from BMC, which minimized risk, eliminated delays between jobs, and integrated with the hospital’s existing IT infrastructure.
 
The BMC Control-M Workload Automation solution is now enabling the mainframe host of VGHKS to communicate with each of its open systems perfectly, integrating the management of critical scheduling processes from a single point of control, as well as eliminating errors in a simplified and automated manner. This in turn results in significant time saving by shortening the scheduled workload processing time by up to 50 percent.
 
Moreover, the BMC Control-M Workload Automation solution allows users to integrate their service level agreement (SLA) benchmarks to scheduled workloads in a single window from both business and technological perspectives. With the solution’s centralized GUI, the easy-to-use and intuitive interface does not require knowledge on mainframe or Time Sharing Option (TSO) mastery. As a result, manpower efficiency has improved by 50 percent and training time and costs related to IT staff have been reduced.

Digital Records May Not Cut Health Costs, Study Cautions

Computerized patient records are unlikely to cut health care costs and may actually encourage doctors to order expensive tests more often, a study published on Monday concludes.

Industry experts have said that electronic health records could generate huge savings — as much as $80 billion a year, according to a RAND Corporation estimate. The promise of cost savings has been a major justification for billions of dollars in federal spending to encourage doctors to embrace digital health records.

But research published Monday in the journal Health Affairs found that doctors using computers to track tests, like X-rays and magnetic resonance imaging, ordered far more tests than doctors relying on paper records.

The use of costly image-taking tests has increased sharply in recent years. Many experts contend that electronic health records will help reduce unnecessary and duplicative tests by giving doctors more comprehensive and up-to-date information when making diagnoses.

The study showed, however, that doctors with computerized access to a patient’s previous image results ordered tests on 18 percent of the visits, while those without the tracking technology ordered tests on 12.9 percent of visits. That is a 40 percent higher rate of image testing by doctors using electronic technology instead of paper records.

The gap, according to the study, was even greater — a 70 percent higher rate — for more advanced and expensive image tests, including M.R.I. tests and CT, or computerized tomography, scans.

“Our research raises real concerns about whether health information technology is going to be the answer to reducing costs,” said Dr. Danny McCormick, the lead author of the study, who is an assistant professor at the Harvard Medical School and a member of the department of medicine at the Cambridge Health Alliance, a health system north of Boston.

ARMONK, NY and MOUNT PROSPECT, IL - 29 Feb 2012: IBM (NYSE: IBM) today announced the Society of Critical Care Medicine (SCCM) is using IBM analytics to help its members and the wider medical community more effectively deliver care to critically ill patients around the globe. SCCM is a non-profit organization that connects 16,000 physicians, nurses, pharmacists and other clinicians in more than 100 countries to help address the needs of critical care patients, through education, research and advocacy.  The organization is using IBM Web analytics to mine through information generated as a result of search activity related to clinical issues in intensive care units (ICUs) such as sedation, sepsis, and mechanical ventilation.

Using IBM's Web analytics technology in collaboration with IBM Business Partner, Riverpoint Solutions Group, the society can glean insight into the focus that is most relevant or of interest to a specific  clinician and effectively deliver information and education options on clinical advances to that clinician in the future.   Based on available resources and access to medical knowledge in any part of the world, the level of care provided to patients can vary widely. Online learning has made clinical knowledge available to those treating patients in the developing world.

For years, professional education in organized medicine typically meant live events. Today, SCCM is moving education forward in the form of virtual engagements via Learn ICU, a Web site that hosts all of the Society's educational activities, best-practice webinars, and case-based simulations. SCCM members have access to all necessary information without having to travel or even leave their hospitals.

SCCM makes all relevant medical information and educational resources available through this  online collaborative information exchange.  In doing so, SCCM is addressing disparities in the standards of care around the world by providing members access to the most up-to-date clinical knowledge and the ability to collaborate with colleagues regardless of where they are based.

For example, when healthcare providers see a critically ill patient and are uncertain what to do, they can turn immediately to Learn ICU on a computer or mobile device to discover more information on the subject, including the latest research, past history and case studies -- anything SCCM has produced, searchable by topic. Information can then be immediately applied to a patient's care.

Prior Learn ICU, the Society would disseminate information broadly to all of its members without a specific focus to their specialty or clinical interests.  Now, the Society is able to identify strong relationships among an individual’s attendance at live training events,  webinars, and online self-directed education and compare it to demographic information like certifications, geographic region, or years of experience. As a result, the Society can target the right information and courses to the right physicians, nurses or pharmacists to ensure each is getting the right information at the right time to more effectively help save lives. 

Critical care is defined as multi-organ system dysfunction. in other words, one set of organs fails and then the next set fails rapidly and the next set fails rapidly. If you can't stop this cascading organ failure the patient will die.  Being trained in a single organ specialty -- for example, cardiology or nephrology -- is not enough. Critical care  physicians (known as “intensivists”) must look at the entire patient holistically to help prevent multiple organ failure and save the patient’s life.  

“We train physicians, nurses, pharmacists and respiratory therapists around the world -- anyone who might work in the intensive care unit or might care for a critically ill patient,” said David Martin, CEO of the SCCM, which in 10 years has expanded its global presence in Europe and throughout Asia, Africa and South America and, last year alone, trained more than 9,000 medical professionals in its Fundamentals family of courses. “The needs of physicians are different from nurses and their needs are different from pharmacists.  By tapping into IBM’s Smarter Commerce initiative we can better understand each professional's areas of interest and deliver the right information in their specialty that will help them provide better care for patients around the world."

Toronto-based Runnymede, which provides specialized medical, therapeutic and outpatient services to people affected by long-term chronic conditions, was subjected to considerable network downtime with an outdated data infrastructure. This resulted in delays when hospital staff accessed applications supporting patient care and in unreliable communication between staff and patients.

PALO ALTO, Calif. -- HP today announced it is working with Central Logic, a leading healthcare software provider, to help hospitals improve patient care, increase hospital efficiency and reduce costs.
HP is integrating Central Logic Core™, an intuitive, web-based bed management system, into its HP Z600 Workstations. Hospital staff can replace their whiteboards with this HP touchscreen technology solution to more easily manage patient case processing and bed capacity optimization.
Hospitals of all sizes can choose from any number of display options including the HP TouchSmart 9300HP 47-inch touch capable digital signage displays and the highly mobile HP Slate 2.
Central Logic’s software will be sold exclusively on HP hardware through HP Healthcare Specialist Partners and distributors such as Ingram-Micro.
