BADEN, SWITZERLAND—September 9, 2016—Vattenfall Europe Wärme AG (VE-W), a subsidiary of Swedish utility Vattenfall AB, has selected GE’s Power Services business (NYSE: GE) to overhaul and extend the operating life of two, 130-megawatt Siemens steam turbines from 1993 and 1963 at the utility’s hard coal-fired DHP Wedel Power Plant in Hamburg, Germany. The project recognizes GE’s enhanced capabilities to service power equipment made by other manufacturers and the important role that coal-generating technology will play in helping meet the region’s future energy needs.

“We are pleased to work with GE, who presented us with a comprehensive proposal to refurbish the Wedel station’s steam turbines, which ensure lifetime extension measures to help guarantee a sustainable operation of the plant,” said Markus Wonka, plant manager from Vattenfall in Hamburg.

GE is supplying Vattenfall with technology that includes advanced steam turbine, generator, boiler and air quality control systems to deliver improved levels of efficiency and lower levels of emissions.

The Wedel station agreement builds on GE’s 25 years of servicing generation equipment at various Vattenfall power plants throughout Germany. GE enhanced its capabilities to service power equipment made by other manufacturers following the acquisition of Alstom Power in November 2015.

“We are excited to work with Vattenfall to demonstrate our enhanced capabilities to service other manufacturers’ turbosets by providing a customized package to meet Vattenfall’s efficiency and reliability requirements and demonstrate how GE’s coal-generation portfolio is well-positioned to respond to the region’s future energy needs,” said Pascal Schweitzer, general manager of GE’s Power Services business in Europe. “This project offers Vattenfall the kind of value-added proposition they are looking for to remain competitive and environmentally sustainable.”

For the project, GE will overhaul the two-unit station’s generating equipment in 2017 and 2018, with each unit comprised of a turboset featuring one high-pressure turbine, one intermediate-pressure  turbine and one low-pressure (LP) turbine. The upgrades will extend the operating life of the units for several years and help increase their reliability and efficiency for Vattenfall.

The Wedel turbine overhauls are part of an overall refurbishment project that Vattenfall has scheduled at the station between 2016 and 2018. GE also will supply the valves and deliver the new LP stationary and rotating blades. Major parts of the overhaul work will be performed on-site, but the rotors will be shipped to GE’s service factory in Berlin. The turbine overhauls are scheduled to be performed from April to August 2017 (Unit 2) and the same period in 2018 (Unit 1).

HOUSTON—September 6, 2016- GE Oil & Gas has signed a major agreement with MODEC, an owner/operator and EPCI general contractor of floating production systems including Floating Production Storage and Offloading (FPSO), to supply and service gas turbines for FPSOs in Brazil.
MODEC ordered GE gas turbines for eight FPSOs based in Brazil and signed an overall maintenance contract with varying durations for each vessel, reaching up to 3 maintenance cycles for gas turbines on six FPSOs. The contractual service agreement will include data analytics for advanced monitoring and diagnostics, helping to improve equipment availability and operational efficiency.
It is one of GE’s largest ever service agreement for FPSOs to date and represents a new milestone for the offshore industry.
“The announcement of this contract underscores GE’s wealth of maintenance experience working with gas turbines and is testament to our advanced analytics expertise and physical presence in Brazil,” said Maria Sferruzza, General Manager Turbomachinery Solutions Services.
GE Oil & Gas and MODEC have developed a long term relationship, reflected in the length of the contract. The FPSOs are owned by consortiums comprised of MODEC and its partners, and also MODEC provides operation and maintenance services for those fleets.
GE Oil & Gas has a base in Petropolis, enabling it to undertake repair work onshore where necessary to reduce turnaround time.
There is a growing trend in the FPSO segment towards entering into long-term contractual service agreements for FPSOs as opposed managing maintenance on a single event basis. The use of Digital Solutions in the contract will allow MODEC to maximize operation efficiency and production output as well as reducing manpower requirements offshore.

BAGHDAD—September 8, 2016—GE (NYSE: GE) signed a multiyear agreement in Iraq with Mass Energy Group Holding. The US$520 million contract also includes operation and maintenance services as well as GE’s advanced digital industrial solutions for the 3-gigawatt gas-fired Basmaya Power Plant, only 40 kilometers east of Baghdad. This contract represents a continuing effort between Mass Energy Group Holding, the Iraqi Ministry of Electricity (MOE) and GE to bring much-needed power to the people of Iraq.

“The Basmaya Power Plant is a milestone project that marks the first-of-its-kind independent power producer agreement between Mass Energy Group Holding and Iraq’s Ministry of Electricity,” said Ahmad Ismail, chairman of Mass Energy Group Holding. “In addition to meeting the surging demand for power from the Iraqi people, the plant will support the country’s focus on building its infrastructure and strengthening local industries. The power plant will feed the national grid, benefiting all sections of the community. GE has been our long-term partner, and by operating the plant, GE is bringing its advanced technology solutions to help us to deliver the highest levels of efficiency, reliability and productivity.”

The multiyear service agreement builds on GE’s long-term relationship with Mass Energy Group Holding, which includes prior contracts to provide Basmaya with eight units of its advanced 9FA gas turbines and four units of its C7 steam turbines. The project is being developed in two phases, with each phase delivering 1,500 megawatts (MW) of power, which together is enough power to meet the needs of over 600,000 households.

“This agreement highlights GE’s long-term commitment to Iraq and is a testament to the trust our customers have in our ability to execute,” said Joe Anis, president and CEO of GE’s Power Services business in the Middle East and Africa. “The introduction of Predix* and the Digital Twin, as part of the multiyear agreement for the Basmaya Power Plant, marks a new shift in the industry by maximizing the distinctive value that digital technologies offer to enhance the power plant’s operational efficiency.”

In addition to extending the entire breadth of operations, maintenance and services support to the power plant, the deal also marks the first time that GE will bring its advanced digital industrial solutions for the power sector to Iraq. Powered by Predix, GE’s advanced cloud-based operating system built exclusively for industry, GE’s Asset Performance Management (APM) software application will draw data to monitor, analyze, enhance and predict equipment health. APM’s anomaly detection capability helps predict outages before they happen, improving power plant reliability, optimizing just-in-time maintenance and reducing plant downtime.

With three offices in Iraq—in Baghdad, Erbil and the southern oil and gas hub of Basra—GE continues to deliver its latest technology and expertise to local customers. Over 130 GE turbines are in operation in the country apart from ongoing agreements to support power generation plants across Iraq. GE has supplied the Iraqi MOE with 56 more gas turbines for various projects, which generate about 7,600 MW to support the expansion of the country’s energy infrastructure and help drive future economic growth. Earlier this year, GE also signed the “Power Up Plan” agreement with the MOE to bring a set of solutions, including upgrades and maintenance projects, to strengthen productivity and efficiency levels across various power plants in Iraq.

HOUSTON—September 7, 2016—As the sophistication and complexity of dynamic positioning (DP) systems have evolved, it has led to the risk that DP operators may have become preoccupied with managing the computer rather than managing the primary task of controlling the ship. In response to this potential risk, GE has revolutionized the operator interface of its SeaStream* DP system to ensure that operators can rapidly familiarize themselves with the system, putting the control of the ship back in the hand of mariners.

Recently, SEACOR Marine LLC’s platform support vessel (PSV) Olmeca has successfully completed its sea trial in Bayou Le Batre, Alabama, with GE’s SeaStream DP system onboard.

“We have recently completed the DP sea trial on the SEACOR Olmeca PSV, and the system has performed superbly. We are very pleased with the outcome and look forward to future installations going as well if not better,” Tim Clerc, manager of engineering, SEACOR Marine said. “We’ve been working with GE for over 10 years. GE’s technology enables our mariners to move more freely and make decisions more quickly. At the same time, we get to benefit from improved energy efficiency with SeaStream DP.”

The SeaStream DP system enhances situational awareness, rebalancing time and attention from system management to true seamanship. Its intuitive interface has been developed collaboratively by GE’s DP specialists, together with GE’s software center of excellence, and followed extensive consultation with users at all levels.

“The SeaStream DP system provides a familiar, reduced-stress working environment, enabling the operator to fulfill duties safely and efficiently,” said Tim Schweikert, president & CEO, GE’s Marine Solutions. “In parallel, we also upgraded our existing marine services training centers and established new ones at strategic locations close to users around the world.
