CUSTOMER WIN: Comverge Lights Up Business Performance with BMC Remedyforce

Press release:

CUSTOMER WIN: Comverge Lights Up Business Performance with BMC Remedyforce

BMC’s cloud service desk solution helps reduce costs and increase business efficiency

SAN FRANCISCO – SALESFORCE.COM DREAMFORCE – Sept. 18, 2012 – For intelligent energy management solutions provider Comverge, cutting costs and increasing efficiencies across its IT functions were important goals. The organization realized an opportunity to lower costs while enabling more efficient IT processes by replacing its existing IT service desk application with a more modern cloud based solution.
The company selected the Remedyforce Service Desk solution from BMC Software (NASDAQ: BMC).
“The [cost structure] of the solution we previously had actually charged ’per user’,” said Danielle Bailey, Comverge IT Manager. “As we grew, that expense continued to grow, even though it wasn’t providing us the same ROI per person. One of the reasons we went with Remedyforce is that we wanted to be able to reduce that cost.”
Bailey added, “Because Remedyforce is web-based, everybody can access it. It’s great. The end-users say that Remedyforce is a lot easier for them to use and to share with others. We have been able to show where IT is actually starting to save money by increasing efficiency and productivity.”
The Challenge
In efforts to cut IT expenses while improving efficiency, Comverge needed a cost-effective service desk solution that would support new processes and enable superior communications at all levels of the organization.
The Solution
Comverge chose BMC to reduce costs, improve efficiency, and enable better collaboration among service technicians and with upper management. BMC also provided better change management controls, allowing Comverge to more easily comply with industry regulations.
Benefits
BMC’s cloud-based solution offered Comverge improved mobile capabilities and change management tracking. It also provided robust collaboration among peers to help them resolve problems faster and improved communication with senior executives. Comverge has experienced a number of additional benefits by implementing the Remedyforce product, including:
  • Reduction of IT support costs by $50,000 annually through improved software cost structure to a subscription model versus a license model
  • Increased efficiency for field technicians through the use of mobile apps for ticket logging
  • Improved reporting and communication with senior managers related to incidents and ongoing resource needs
  • Enhanced Sarbanes-Oxley compliance related to improved change management tracking and workflows
At Dreamforce 2012
BMC will offer a preview of new product features to its Remedyforce Service Desk solution at Dreamforce 2012. New product features include major integrations with asset management features found in BMC FootPrints to help IT help desk technicians resolve end-user issues faster. New release management features to existing ITIL processes allow IT organizations greater visibility and control to manage multiple changes and tasks to enterprise-wide application updates for customers. Finally, over 50 customer-suggested enhancements focused on reducing time to value and improving overall end-user satisfaction have been added to the new release of Remedyforce.
The new features are expected to be available for customers later this calendar year, in the November timeframe.

CUSTOMER SUCCESS: Northwestern University Delivers Better Insight to Students, Faculty Using BMC Software

Press release:

CUSTOMER SUCCESS: Northwestern University Delivers Better Insight to Students, Faculty Using BMC Software

Secure, real-time visibility of IT enables superior web application performance capabilities

CHICAGO, Sept. 6, 2012–With more than 25,000 students, faculty and staff, Northwestern University prides itself on its ability to combine innovative teaching and research in a highly collaborative environment. Web applications are critical to that collaboration, representing a “backbone” for the university’s work.
The university’s IT department needed a much stronger view into the performance, health and availability of its web applications. Northwestern turned to BMC Software (NASDAQ: BMCto improve its dynamic learning and teaching capabilities.Prior to choosing BMC, the university had limited visibility into its application performance, which meant diagnosing and resolving any problem was lengthy and inefficient.
“With BMC Software, we have an accurate way to measure usage, performance and availability,” said Dana Nielsen, director of monitoring and management systems at Northwestern University Information Technology. “As a result, we can make better resource decisions and that means better support for our students, faculty and staff.”
Nielsen added, “Instead of relying on anecdotal information, we have a baseline for an intelligent conversation about performance. Having a true measurement of what’s happened has increased our credibility. We can show that our systems are up 99 percent of the time. All of that has been tremendously helpful.”
The Challenge
Northwestern University did not have a single, secure dashboard to monitor its web applications and adequately determine performance issues. As a result, the lack of visibility to critical data caused the processes for troubleshooting and resolving problems to be inefficient.
The Solution
The university created a capacity and availability service monitoring dashboard with the BMC End User Experience Management solution. This provided IT staff with real-time web application performance data. Additionally, students, faculty and staff could check the performance, health and availability of their web applications.
Benefits
The university has experienced several benefits, including:
  • Access to real-time data, which accelerated problem resolution and improved the user experience
  • Better reporting capabilities to facilitate rapid problem resolution
  • Accurate measurement and tracking to demonstrate quality of services, enabling better decision making
  • Freed up technology resources and improved collaboration on issues

ZIM implements Business Service Management to increase availability of business services and cut issue resolution time

JERUSALEM, Aug. 21, 2012 – ZIM Integrated Shipping Services Ltd., one of the world’s largest container shipping companies, has selected BMC Software (NASDAQ: BMC) to implement a comprehensive Business Service Management (BSM) platform, including a new command and control center complete with IT service management (ITSM) and automation capabilities.
ZIM services a global market that includes ports-of-call in more than 120 countries.  The company’s business requires 24/7 IT support and comprehensive monitoring capabilities to track its various shipping solutions.  However, ZIM’s legacy IT platform was dated, disparate, and frequently unable to manage its operational requirements.
This previous inefficiency led ZIM to realize it needed an uninterrupted, consolidated IT management solution to support its growing customer base and business needs.  The company conducted a thorough review of competitive offerings and chose BMC.
“We selected BMC’s Business Service Management platform as part of our strategy to improve service to our users, ensure business continuity and consolidate our IT centers globally,” said David Avni, chief information officer at ZIM. “I am confident that BMC’s commitment to the project, combined with the professional work of the BMC and Matrix consultancy teams, will ensure we meet the challenges according to the aggressive deadlines we have set."
The Challenge
Working with an antiquated IT platform, ZIM was unable to manage its IT needs to meet the demands of its growing business. Managing service to over 120 countries required increased availability of business services, a complete, consolidated view into IT services and faster problem resolution – all from one, unified platform.
The Solution
Harnessing the benefits of BMC’s complementary solutions, ZIM selected BMC’s BSM platform over various other solutions to effectively manage and schedule its business processes.  Matrix, the leading information technology company in Israel and a strategic partner to BMC, is assisting with the implementation.
Benefits
Using BMC’s BSM solution, ZIM looks forward to:
  • Improved real-time visibility into the impact of performance and availability issues across its global operations
  • The ability to manage and monitor the effects of operational change and its global shipping assets
  • Increased operational efficiency and productivity by automating certain tasks across applications, consoles, audits, logins and data centers
“These solutions will offer a rich, comprehensive set of productivity tools for managing and scheduling business processes,” said Yigal Shachak, BMC divisional manager at Matrix.  “Matrix is proud to partner with BMC to provide support and training to ZIM. This implementation will have significant business impact on ZIM by providing a more customized, efficient technology platform to manage its global IT infrastructure."

New platform speeds cloud adoption for IT giant’s global customer base

MADRID, Aug. 15, 2012 – When one of the world’s largest multi-national companies decides to build a private cloud, it is a significant investment that carries with it a lot of expectations – reduced expense, improved business agility and speed, better service delivery, and positive revenue and margin impact, to name just a few.

CUSTOMER SUCCESS: Specsavers Drives Large Global Expansion Using BMC Software Solution

BMC delivered unmatched price-to-performance capability

LONDON, August 13, 2012 – UK-based Specsavers, the largest privately-held optical chain in the world, has been executing a major expansion plan to double its number of stores. Faced with an aggressive timeline, the company needed an IT service management platform that was flexible enough to meet the diverse needs of its growing base of optometrist partners.
Specsavers selected BMC Software (NASDAQ: BMC) because its products exceeded the optical company’s price-to-performance requirements.
“We didn’t look at systems from HP because we were looking for a more medium-priced solution. In fact, price was an important buying criteria and nothing could match the price-to-performance capability of the BMC FootPrints solution,” said Mark Beard, IT project manager for Specsavers.
He added, “BMC was clearly the one that met all of our requirements, especially the need for a solution that was both open and ITIL-friendly.”
The Challenge
Specsavers questioned the long-term usability of its existing IT service management package, Psylvestries, in light of thepressures of their aggressive growth strategy. They needed a cost-efficient, unified IT solution that would support its expanding partnerships around the world.
The Solution
Specsavers identified BMC as the clear choice over competitive products because the solution met all their requirements – from performance to price.
Benefits
BMC FootPrints equipped Specsavers with a scalable IT service management platform to manage its rapid expansion plans. Specsavers has experienced a number of benefits, including:
  • Improved service to stores around the globe
  • Achievement of ninety-nine percent of its service level targets for the business
  • Better visibility through a centralized, global solution
  • An open architecture option at a time when the company was moving away from Microsoft and other proprietary platforms

BMC Software Acquires VaraLogix to Fuel Fast Application Deployment

Press release:

BMC Software Acquires VaraLogix to Fuel Fast Application Deployment

BMC extends its leadership in DevOps via Enhanced Application Release Automation

HOUSTON, August 8, 2012 – BMC Software (NASDAQ: BMC) today announced it has acquired VaraLogix, a proven application release automation provider. With this acquisition, BMC is expanding its DevOps portfolio to make it easier for IT to more quickly and efficiently deliver cutting-edge applications with fewer outages, lower risk and higher return on investment.
The volume of software applications and updates continues to grow exponentially, promising new capabilities that can put a company ahead of its competition. However, deploying applications continues to present major challenges to companies of all sizes. The implications are enormous, because failed deployments can wreak havoc in terms of cost and efficiency.
Traditionally, application deployments have been plagued with complex technical issues that result in deployment errors and failures. Often times, advanced application specialists are required throughout the deployment process, taking them away from their priority duty of building new, differentiated applications. The combination of BMC and VaraLogix technologies provides an abstraction layer that allows IT teams to deploy applications regardless of programming experience.
“We intend to implement VaraLogix Q to create a flexible and fast environment, allowing us to release changes to our production environments on a timely, efficient basis,” said James Obukhovsky, IT director, Infrastructure and Operations for Wet Seal, Inc. “We will seek to use this technology to impact our customer experience and sales in a positive manner.”
VaraLogix is the only solution specifically built to automate business-critical, multi-tier application deployment and configuration management. It will be integrated into the new BMC Release Lifecycle Management offering that will deliver:
·         Improvements in process management for continuous integration and delivery
·         Intelligent packaging for multi-technology, multi-tier applications
·         Open deployment management leveraging existing automation agents
·         Basic environment management for correct application configurations
“BMC has always had an innovative, intelligent approach to DevOps. By making visible what was previously invisible in the complex application release process, our technology gives customers an unprecedented ability to define, implement, monitor, assess and continually improve the application release process in an agile way,” said BMC’s John J. Balena, general manager, DevOps Solutions. “With today’s announcement, we are advancing our application automation suite and addressing an acute industry need for application release automation that works at the speed of today’s business.”

CUSTOMER SUCCESS: PEMEX Taps Into Deep Well of Business Value with BMC Business Service Management Platform

Press release:

CUSTOMER SUCCESS: PEMEX Taps Into Deep Well of Business Value with BMC Business Service Management Platform

Global oil giant works with BMC to drive unprecedented service delivery and customer satisfaction

HOUSTON, Aug. 7, 2012 – Petroleos Mexicanos (PEMEX) is the largest company in Mexico and Latin America. Providing superior products and services to customers is the oil giant’s top priority.
When Abraham Galan became chief information officer at PEMEX, however, he discovered that the company operated a highly disparate IT system that managed more than 1,000 IT applications and multiple data centers. Galan quickly saw that IT was inhibiting PEMEX’s ability to maintain and scale a wide array of services, negatively impacting customers, partners and employees.
To connect and standardize its infrastructure, applications and processes, Galan and PEMEX did not hesitate to make sweeping changes, implementing BMC Software’s (NASDAQ: BMCBusiness Service Management (BSM) platform.
Prior to switching its IT management to the BMC platform, PEMEX had tried almost every tool available in the market. Each had proven unproductive and inefficient, as none were able to deliver common IT processes for PEMEX, much less a cohesive IT services strategy. Major changes in the business provided Galan with an unprecedented opportunity to connect the dots between PEMEX’s IT infrastructure, applications and processes and BMC solutions paved the way.
“I would definitely recommend BMC Software products because they deliver an integrated view [of IT management],” said Galan. “Looking ahead, BMC remains the best choice, not only for monitoring PEMEX IT services and processes, but also to configure the rest of our business processes. IT will continue to drive PEMEX’s growth. The capabilities that BMC delivers are absolutely key to that success.”
The Challenge
A disparate and disconnected IT infrastructure created an environment that was inefficient and increasingly difficult to manage. This meant IT employees spent too much time researching and determining the root cause of problems and not enough time on business-critical work.
The Solution
The company needed to implement a solution for IT that would deliver a complete picture of its IT infrastructure. PEMEX chose BMC’s Business Service Management platform because of the company’s ability to deliver a comprehensive and integrated IT management view that also mapped back to business processes. BMC solutions offered PEMEX the opportunity to achieve application and infrastructure consolidation, as well as IT standardization.
Benefits
In choosing BMC as a technology partner, PEMEX has been able to view its value chain, not just in terms of IT services, but also in terms of its business processes. To date, PEMEX has experienced significant benefits including:
  • Improved levels of customer service
  • Better visibility into overall work flows and processes
  • Improved resource management

University of Hong Kong Aligns IT Infrastructure Library® (ITIL®) Best Practices with BMC’s Remedy ITSM Suite

First tertiary institution in Hong Kong to implement full scale ITIL adoption using BMC Remedy IT Service Management Suite

HONG KONG, March 28, 2012 – BMC Software (NASDAQ: BMC), the recognized leader in Business Service Management (BSM), today announced the University of Hong Kong, the first tertiary institution in Hong Kong, has automated its incident, problem, knowledge and request fulfillment management processes with BMC Software’s Remedy IT Service Management Suite. The university has experienced better user satisfaction through self-service solutions that have increased operational efficiency and improved customer service quality. Additionally, the university has anticipated better IT incident response and resolution time, improved performance against Service Level Agreements (SLA’s) and reduced overall operational costs.
Previously, the University of Hong Kong utilized an in-house developed IT help desk that only provided basic functionality. As the university grew to more than 28,000 staff and students, the IT team struggled with the lack of an industry standard framework to cope with the complexities of supporting such a large organization. To address this issue, the University of Hong Kong sought a new automated solution from BMC Software, which could provide out-of-the-box ITIL®workflow automation to achieve greater process efficiency, effectively manage costs, achieve compliance and deliver superior service quality to its users.
“We selected the BMC Remedy IT Service Management Suite because of its superior combination of functionalities and price points,” said Geoffrey Dengate, director, Information Technology Services, the University of Hong Kong. “We immediately saw more standardization in our IT processes. For example, the improved support for a comprehensive range of ITIL processes and functions has enabled us to deliver better support for our staff and students in terms of IT incident management, as well as provided better visibility into our operational priorities. As an educational institution with a vision of providing the best in information and communication technology for teaching, learning, research and administration, we cannot compromise on quality, and BMC will continue to partner with us on this journey.”
The BMC Remedy IT Service Management Suite helped automate the university’s service management processes – from incident and configuration to change management - and assisted in pursuing its business goal of streamlining and enhancing IT service quality in supporting research and education. The implementation is planned as a four-phase migration of the university’s core service management processes. The second phase, which includes change and configuration management, has just been completed. Adopting a phased approach has resulted in seamless integration with minimized IT downtime and better visibility into incidents and issues while enabling sufficient time to refine processes to match its unique operational needs.  In phase three and four, asset, lifecycle management and cloud computing will be assessed.
“As tertiary institutions move more of their curriculum online, large amounts of data are constantly moving through the system on a daily basis. Management of this information is critical and a robust, easy-to-manage IT infrastructure becomes even more important to business operations,” said Steve Su, country manager, greater China region, BMC Software. “The BMC Remedy IT Service Management Suite automates core IT processes and ensures security and stability while lowering costs. As a result, the University of Hong Kong has benefited from business-aligned IT service management and a better learning experience for staff and students.”
While BMC Software’s implementation was in progress, the university organized an ITILFoundation Training and Certification Program for its entire professional, administrative and clerical staff to provide a better understanding of the ITIL concepts and language. As a result of this training program, the university was awarded the Best Professional Development (ICT Professional) Gold Award and the Best Professional Development Grand Award at the prestigious 2011 Hong Kong Information and Communications Technology Awards.
