EZ DERM Electronic Health Record App Now Powered by Nuance Healthcare 360 Development Platform

EZ DERM's 3-D Mapping App Offers Dermatologists Voice-Powered, Mobile Clinical Documentation Capture

BURLINGTON, Mass., – March 20, 2012 – Today, Nuance Communications, Inc., and EZ DERM, LLC™ announce that the EZ DERM electronic health record (EHR) iPad app is now powered by the Nuance Healthcare 360 | Development Platform. The EZ DERM EHR joins a growing list of healthcare apps that incorporate Nuance’s cloud-based, medical speech recognition technology to allow physicians to use their voice for app interaction and navigation, as well as for clinical documentation while on-the-go.

According to a recent survey from the American Academy of Dermatology, only 33.7 percent of dermatologists are satisfied with their current EHR. The EZ DERM iPad app, which is being launched this week at the 70th Annual American Academy of Dermatology conference, aims to address current frustrations with EHR technology already on the market. EZ DERM is the only dermatology-specific EHR that is solely based on the iPad® mobile platform and employs patent-pending 3D anatomical maps of the human body, Nuance speech recognition, and clinical decision-support.

“As a dermatologist, I have first-hand insight into the problems plaguing today’s EHR platforms, most of which are based on the cumbersome desktop or laptop platforms that rely on keyboard data entry. Allowing dermatologists, who can see up to a hundred patients a day, a touch-based and speech-driven technology was a logical solution for busy dermatology practices,” said Srdjan Prodanovich, MD, FAAD and founder of EZ DERM, LLC. “The EZ DERM app was specifically designed to improve care and help dermatologists manage patients in an intuitive, efficient and mobile way. Leveraging the 360 | Development Platform was a no-brainer for us. Nuance is the leader in medical speech recognition and offers a proven benefit for our app that not only differentiates it, but makes it highly usable.”

With Nuance Healthcare-powered mobile apps, clinicians can use their voice for app interaction and navigation, as well as for mobile clinical documentation, leading to the following benefits:

  • Increased productivity as a result of speaking vs. typing and, in turn, improved physician satisfaction with mobile device use;
  • Cost savings from eliminating traditional documentation processes involving paper, medical transcription support and caregiver time; and
  • Highly-detailed patient notes that capture unique details from the patient encounter at the point-of-care.
“There’s broad physician demand for health IT applications, specifically EHRs, to be more user-friendly and intuitive,” said Jonathon Dreyer, Nuance Healthcare mobile solutions. “We’ve designed the 360 | Development Platform with the industry’s ease-of-use demand in mind, and to provide developers with an easy to implement tool that will differentiate and enhance their m-Health applications. As the mobile clinician becomes more commonplace, we expect continued integration of our speech-enabled development platform as a means to drive an array of voice-driven healthcare apps aimed at simplifying the mobile experience.”

The Nuance Healthcare 360 | Development Platform supports multiple devices and operating systems. By providing all CPU intensive voice and language processing in the cloud, this platform enables speech and language understanding technologies to be integrated as part of browser-based applications, mobile applications and thin-client desktop solutions.

News Release from GE

21 February 2012
GE Announces Upgraded Video Compression Module to Enhance Military Decision Making and Troop Safety

ICS-8580 rugged XMC responds to growing use of video in conflict zones

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA February 212012 GE Intelligent Platforms today announced an enhanced version of the ICS-8580 rugged high definitionvideo compression XMC module. Designed in response to the growing use of video in a broad range of defense applications, it allows very high quality moving images to be captured, transmitted and stored at very high speed with very low latency and with minimal consumption of precious bandwidth or disk space. As such, it can make a significant contribution to superior decision making and improved troop safety.
The ICS-8580 can capture video inputs and archive or stream them overEthernet, managing multiple streams and performing capture, manipulation, conversion, compression, storage, decompression and video display. Its rugged XMC form factor means that it is compact, lightweight and consumes little power, enabling it to be easily deployed in systems destined for deployment in harsh environments that are constrained by size, weight and power (SWaP).
The original version of the ICS-8580 has been widely deployed in programs such as NASA’s Global Hawk initiative.
Specifically, the enhancements from the previous version of the ICS-8580 include:
  • The provision of two DSPs, each of which can be configured as an encoder or decoder, providing superior system flexibility.
  • Full support for PCI Express, allowing uncompressed data to be uploaded and downloaded and improving configurability within custom systems
  • Provision of an SDK (software development kit) for faster integration with remote configuration options
  • Inclusion of six inputs and four outputs for flexible pass-through modes, allowing the use of any front end connector and facilitating integration with legacy systems
  • Out of the box ability to connect to a NAS (network-attached storage) for easier integration.
  • Support for the synchronization of stereo or mono sound for improved flexibility.
“The increasing deployment of unmanned vehicles by military organizations around the world is increasing demand for the use of video for intelligence, reconnaissance and surveillance applications,” said Rod Rice, General Manager, Military & Aerospace Products, GE Intelligent Platforms. “The ICS-8580 provides a substantial step forward in its ability to stream video, and provides a solution for a new realm of sophisticated, demanding applications.”

In video capture and transmission, the primary challenge is how to maintain video quality in order to maximize critical detail while minimizing the use of bandwidth by implementing highly efficient algorithms: transmitting ‘raw’, unprocessed high definition video data at very high speed requires bandwidth that is rarely available in, for example, air-to-ground applications. Similarly, storage of high definition video data – for later review and analysis, for example - in its uncompressed form can require terabytes of disk space.

The ICS-8580 features H.264 video compression/decompression (codec) technology, which is widely regarded as being the optimum solution: it is considered to be up to 3x as efficient as other codec solutions, allowing vital image detail to be retained while occupying the minimum possible bandwidth or storage.

At the heart of the ICS-8580 lies a combination of a versatile FPGA device coupled with powerful dual DSP signal processors, providing unparalleled compute power for video applications. The FPGA enables video switching, format conversions, scaling, blending and other processing functions while the dual DSP processors enable multichannel video compression and decompression for over 100x reduction in bandwidth with minimal impact on video quality. It can handle up to two channels of full HD (1080p30) or UXGA (1,600 x 1,200 @ 30 frames/second) video, or up to four channels of standard definition video.
