Two Apps, TuneIn and iHeart Radio, Put Radio Online

By BEN SISARIO

For the radio industry, there may be no better symbol for the challenges of adapting to the digital age than two candy-colored mobile apps.

The apps, iHeartRadio and TuneIn, are aggregators — conduits for thousands of online radio streams. With a few taps on a smartphone, a listener can dart among a pop station in New York, gospel in Atlanta and talk almost anywhere.

Both have quickly amassed big audiences. TuneIn, which offers 70,000 streams from around the world, has more than 30 million monthly users. IHeartRadio, owned by the broadcasting giant Clear Channel Communications, has been downloaded 95 million times and has attracted more than 12 million registered users.

For broadcasters, these aggregators can help reach audiences in the growing but increasingly fragmented world of online radio, which can mean anything from a customized playlist on Pandora or Spotify to an iTunes stream.

“Our mission is about getting our content to as wide an audience as possible,” said Anil Dewan, the director of interactive media at KCRW, a public station in Santa Monica, Calif., whose digital outlets include TuneIn, iHeartRadio, iTunes, Spotify and an app of its own.

At the same time, many broadcasters say they worry about the rising costs of online royalties; the plans of the companies behind the apps; and the possibility of being lost within the aggregators, like needles in enormous digital haystacks.

Both aggregators let users find stations by typing a city, genre or station name into their search bars. TuneIn also points listeners to any station currently playing a given artist or song; iHeartRadio has an extensive custom-radio function, modeled after Pandora.

But as businesses they represent two poles of media. TuneIn, in Palo Alto, Calif., which started as a simple directory, transformed itself into an app purveyor two years ago, with streams that include not only radio and podcasts, but also emergency scanner signals.

Farm Software Tries to Make Its Mark - Digital Domain

By RANDALL STROSS

THE world doesn’t necessarily need the gazillion-and-one games that seem available on smartphones. But it could use more apps and services that address the needs of business people with specialized needs.

Like farmers. FarmLogs, a start-up based in Ann Arbor, Mich., is a one of a few new companies that are making a pitch to farmers. It offers a cloud-based software service — no software is downloaded; only a Web browser is needed — that embodies the latest technology. But in reaching its intended customers, the company must often rely on an old-fashioned medium: in-person selling.

Jesse Vollmar, 23, and Brad Koch, 22, graduated from Saginaw Valley State University last year and were running their own small I.T. consulting company when they decided to try to make easy-to-use software for farms like the one on which Mr. Vollmar grew up in Caro, Mich., about 90 miles northwest of Detroit.

The two received funding from Y Combinator, a seed fund in Mountain View, Calif. During a three-month residency in Silicon Valley last winter, under Y Combinator’s aegis, they worked on farm management software aimed at tracking all of a farmer’s field activities. In one view, a farmer can see rectangular representations of what is planted on each field. A click leads to a log of what was done when on each field: tilling on this date, fertilizing on that date, spraying on another.

With the data stored in one place, it can be combined with information from other sources and used by the farmers. If they need, they can also share it easily with consulting agronomists, crop insurance agents, the Agriculture Department and others.

Nathan Engelhard, an early customer who farms 1,000 acres in Unionville, Mich., says FarmLogs gives him the ability to take his iPad out into the field and make entries himself. “FarmLogs is a money saver,” he says, “because I don’t have to write things down on a scrap of paper and pay someone to sit in an office and enter them into the computer.”

Accenture Develops Innovative Mobile App for the “Lux in Arcana – The Vatican Secret Archive Reveals Itself” Exhibition Featuring Never-Before-Seen Vatican Documents
App enables all 100 priceless documents of the exhibition to be accessible
on smartphones and tablet PCs; also features augmented reality solutions
ROME; March. 28, 2012 — Accenture (NYSE: ACN) announced today that it has developed a free mobile app that delivers rich multimedia content to the fingertips of visitors to an unprecedented exhibition featuring documents held in the Secret Vatican Archive that have never before been seen by the public and now can be admired at the Capitoline Museums in Rome.
The exhibition “Lux in Arcana – The Vatican Secret Archives Reveals Itself” features, among other things, documents such as ciphered letters, manuscripts, codices, and ancient parchments. The materials date from the eighth to the 20th century and the exhibition marks the first time they have ever been shown away from Vatican City.  The items were unveiled at theCapitoline Museums in Rome on Feb. 29 and will remain on exhibit thru Sept. 9 of this year.
The mobile app developed by Accenture, which is the official technology partner of the exhibition, significantly enhances the experience of users by delivering supplemental details about the historical items to their smartphones and tablets for both Apple and Android. For example, the app displays technical data, photos and images, provides detailed background information, and features rich, multimedia content. The app allows users to see the documents by alphabetical or chronological order, by the typology (letter, agreement, papal document, etc.) and by the location in the Capitoline Museums halls. Visitors can also follow the path of the exhibition listening to the audio guide feature available through the app.

“Accenture has been an outstanding technology partner and we’re very pleased with the unique user experience that their mobile app delivers”, said Luca Carboni, General Secretary of the Secret Vatican Archive. “We believe the people expected to visit the exhibition will benefit tremendously from the rich content they can access through their devices as they tour the various exhibits.”
The app also features an “augmented reality” capability that can be used outside of the museum at some historical sites in Rome.  One example is the statue of Giordano Bruno in the piazza Campo de’ Fiori. Giordano Bruno, a Dominican friar and philosopher, was burned at the stake in 1600’s after being judged a heretic by the Tribunal of the Roman Inquisition. The app allows visitors to focus their smartphone or tablet on the statue and see Bruno’s pyre burst into flames on the device’s display.  It also allows visitors to open special contents related to Giordano Bruno’s trial and to call up videos with more information on his life and his ideas. Augmented reality is available also for the angels of the Castel Sant’Angelo bridge, carved by the Bernini, and for the Basilica of Santa Maria sopra Minerva, close to the place where Galileo Galilei abjured.
“We’re delighted to be the official technology sponsor of this extraordinary and unprecedented exhibition from the Secret Vatican Archive,” said Fabio Benasso, country managing director,Accenture Italy. “Our country possesses a treasure trove of culture and art that reflects many of the world’s most historical events and should be shared by as many people as possible.
As an integral and longstanding member of the Italian business community, Accenture is proud to support this important initiative celebrating this part of Italy’s cultural heritage.”
The app is available in Italian and English, and is compatible with almost all mobile devices.  It can be downloaded from the Apple store or Google Play for free.
The exhibition “Lux in Arcana – The Vatican Secret Archive Reveals Itself” was conceived for the occasion of the fourth centenary of the Secret Vatican Archives foundation, in collaboration with Roma Capitale, Assessorato alle Politiche Culturali e Centro Storico - Sovraintendenza ai Beni Culturali di Roma and Zètema Progetto Cultura.

Do-it-yourself App Creators: ?Show Me Some Love?

Do-it-yourself App Creators: ?Show Me Some Love?

Intuit QuickBase Study Reveals Motivations and Industry Trends Among DIY App Creators in the Enterprise

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. – Mar. 22, 2012 – “Show me some love.” That’s the plea from a growing number of information workers who independently develop in-house Web applications for their employers.
A recent survey from QuickBase, a unit of Intuit Inc. (Nasdaq: INTU), found that nearly one in five information workers at mid-size to large enterprises have built or customized a Web application or software for work purposes on their own. These DIYers are passionate and motivated to help their teams, and the majority feels their employers should recognize their contributions. Nearly six in 10 – a total of 58 percent– believe their employers should recognize their efforts in the form of financial compensation. However, among DIYers whose companies explicitly do not support their independent efforts, the percentage increases to 71 percent.
Recognition need not be monetary. “A little recognition can go a long way,” said Allison Mnookin, vice president and general manager of Intuit QuickBase. “Supporting and recognizing DIY efforts – no matter how you do it – pays off.
“You’re motivating and rewarding employees who go above and beyond their job descriptions, make their teams more efficient, and solve problems for their companies. Endorsing and celebrating internal innovation can fuel its rapid spread throughout the organization.”
Other forms of recognition respondents found rewarding include publicizing their solutions internally (33 percent) and getting promoted (25 percent).
DIYers Are Pervasive in Select Industries
Computer and IT services firms have the highest percentage of DIY information workers, the survey found, with 62 percent of respondents reporting they have built or customized apps for work. Conversely, these firms are not necessarily empowering their workers to create their own solutions – either by providing the required tools or authorizing employees to find and use their own. In fact, 43 percent of the DIYer population at computer and IT service firms said they are not empowered by their organizations.
Professional services companies reported the second-highest amount of DIYers at 53 percent. And their employees are more likely to feel free to act on their own. A total of 61 percent of the DIYer population said they were empowered by their companies to innovate on their own, the highest among all industries. Professionals in consultancy roles are constantly driven to solve client problems and this data indicates they likely nurture that innovative mentality amongst their employees.
The financial services and insurance industries, where tight IT controls and deep-seated work processes are commonplace, have the highest percentage of non-empowered DIYers. At the same time, however, 43.5 percent still create their own solutions.

IndustryTotal % of DIYers% Empowered% Non-empowered
Computer & IT Services62.357.142.9
Professional Services53.061.138.9
Manufacturing51.450.050.0
Financial Services & Insurance43.541.158.9

“DIYers create lasting value companies should love. Endorsement from management propels the success of DIY solutions even further,” Mnookin added.
In fact, 85 percent of apps created by empowered DIYers are still being used within their organization or team, while non-empowered workers see sustained adoption rates of 77 percent for their solutions.
About the Survey
Intuit and Global Strategy Group surveyed more than 900 information workers at companies with more than 100 employees in October 2011, investigating whether they felt empowered to solve customer and work process problems on their own. The survey also asked whether employees were sanctioned by corporate IT departments to use technologies of their choice to do so. To find more resources on the topic, please visit the Workplace Innovation section of the QuickBase blog. The study was inspired by Forrester Research’s June 2010 report, “The HERO Index: Finding Empowered Employees.”

EZ DERM Electronic Health Record App Now Powered by Nuance Healthcare 360 Development Platform

EZ DERM Electronic Health Record App Now Powered by Nuance Healthcare 360 Development Platform

EZ DERM's 3-D Mapping App Offers Dermatologists Voice-Powered, Mobile Clinical Documentation Capture

BURLINGTON, Mass., – March 20, 2012 – Today, Nuance Communications, Inc., and EZ DERM, LLC™ announce that the EZ DERM electronic health record (EHR) iPad app is now powered by the Nuance Healthcare 360 | Development Platform. The EZ DERM EHR joins a growing list of healthcare apps that incorporate Nuance’s cloud-based, medical speech recognition technology to allow physicians to use their voice for app interaction and navigation, as well as for clinical documentation while on-the-go.

According to a recent survey from the American Academy of Dermatology, only 33.7 percent of dermatologists are satisfied with their current EHR. The EZ DERM iPad app, which is being launched this week at the 70th Annual American Academy of Dermatology conference, aims to address current frustrations with EHR technology already on the market. EZ DERM is the only dermatology-specific EHR that is solely based on the iPad® mobile platform and employs patent-pending 3D anatomical maps of the human body, Nuance speech recognition, and clinical decision-support.

“As a dermatologist, I have first-hand insight into the problems plaguing today’s EHR platforms, most of which are based on the cumbersome desktop or laptop platforms that rely on keyboard data entry. Allowing dermatologists, who can see up to a hundred patients a day, a touch-based and speech-driven technology was a logical solution for busy dermatology practices,” said Srdjan Prodanovich, MD, FAAD and founder of EZ DERM, LLC. “The EZ DERM app was specifically designed to improve care and help dermatologists manage patients in an intuitive, efficient and mobile way. Leveraging the 360 | Development Platform was a no-brainer for us. Nuance is the leader in medical speech recognition and offers a proven benefit for our app that not only differentiates it, but makes it highly usable.”

With Nuance Healthcare-powered mobile apps, clinicians can use their voice for app interaction and navigation, as well as for mobile clinical documentation, leading to the following benefits:

  • Increased productivity as a result of speaking vs. typing and, in turn, improved physician satisfaction with mobile device use;
  • Cost savings from eliminating traditional documentation processes involving paper, medical transcription support and caregiver time; and
  • Highly-detailed patient notes that capture unique details from the patient encounter at the point-of-care.
“There’s broad physician demand for health IT applications, specifically EHRs, to be more user-friendly and intuitive,” said Jonathon Dreyer, Nuance Healthcare mobile solutions. “We’ve designed the 360 | Development Platform with the industry’s ease-of-use demand in mind, and to provide developers with an easy to implement tool that will differentiate and enhance their m-Health applications. As the mobile clinician becomes more commonplace, we expect continued integration of our speech-enabled development platform as a means to drive an array of voice-driven healthcare apps aimed at simplifying the mobile experience.”

The Nuance Healthcare 360 | Development Platform supports multiple devices and operating systems. By providing all CPU intensive voice and language processing in the cloud, this platform enables speech and language understanding technologies to be integrated as part of browser-based applications, mobile applications and thin-client desktop solutions.
