UPMC Invests in Intelligent Infrastructure with IBM to Support Vision of Personalized Medicine

Press release:

UPMC Invests in Intelligent Infrastructure with IBM to Support Vision of Personalized Medicine

Contract extends current project already yielding $191 million in savings
ARMONK, New York - 05 Sep 2012: UPMC, one of the nation’s leading academic medical centers, today announced the renewal of its agreement with IBM (NYSE: IBM) to continue enhancing computing and storage performance and reliability. UPMC’s new technology investment with IBM, valued at $120 million over the next four years, will support the healthcare system’s goal of changing the way that treatments are designed for individual patients by effectively using massive volumes of patient and research data.
Under the original agreement with IBM signed in 2005, UPMC saved or avoided costs of more than $191 million over six years, eliminating the need to create a new data center and supporting UPMC’s rapid growth. Under the new agreement, IBM and UPMC will continue to collaborate on the development of medical technologies that improve care and the patient experience and remain among the founding partners in the Center for Connected Medicine, a showcase for how technology can transform healthcare.
“UPMC is keenly focused on creating new models of effective and affordable care, supported by good science and smart technology. Extending our long partnership with IBM is a key part of that strategy,” said Chief Information Officer Daniel Drawbaugh.
IBM worked with UPMC to design a dynamic, virtualized technology infrastructure that shortened information backup times by 20 percent and recovery times by 50 percent. IBM’s expertise in storage and server virtualization allowed the re-engineered network to become more adaptable and flexible to meet expanding patient volume and data growth for UPMC’s more than 20 hospitals and 400 outpatient locations. The information technology infrastructure supports UPMC’s industry-leading electronic medical records system in which patient information — including tests, radiology images, allergies and medication lists — is always available to the medical team. A private cloud system also supports all mission-critical applications for UPMC, recently ranked 10th in the nation among “America’s Best Hospitals” by U.S. News & World Report.
“UPMC has pioneered a new model for ensuring its information technology keeps pace with the challenging demands of healthcare,” said Dan Pelino, general manager, IBM Healthcare and Life Sciences. “With a focus on flexibility to meet the constantly changing demands of this progressive integrated healthcare delivery and financing system, UPMC's technology infrastructure plays an important role in delivering the highest quality of care, safety and efficiency.”
IBM Global Technology Services will provide support and services over the term of the contract.
UPMC’s virtualized infrastructure is built on IBM BladeCenter and Power System servers, andIBM XIV storage systems

CA Technologies Supports Windows Server 2012 with Data Classification

Press Releases

CA Technologies Supports Windows Server 2012 with Data Classification

Company Extends Content Aware Identity and Access Management Helping Deliver More Precise Access Control for Windows Server
ISLANDIA, NY, September 4, 2012 – CA Technologies (CA: NASDAQ) today announced support for Windows Server 2012 Dynamic Access Control. Integrating CA DataMinder™ Classification with Windows Server 2012 gives customers more precise access control of their data stored on Windows Server, helping to improve information security, reduce risk and meet compliance mandates.
Documents stored on a server that were once classified as non-sensitive can quickly change to contain sensitive or classified information throughout day-to-day operations. CA DataMinder Classification scans, locates and classifies sensitive content stored within Windows Server 2012, including intellectual property, financial information and personally identifiable information such as social security numbers, credit card numbers and other employee relevant data. When used with Windows Server 2012 Dynamic Access Control, CA DataMinder Classification helps to deliver precise and fine-grained access control that enables business processes to continue while protecting the most critical information assets.
“Windows Server 2012 Dynamic Access Control lets customers define central access policies at the organizational level and lets customers control access to data and achieve regulatory compliance,” said Andrew Conway, Director, Product Marketing, Enterprise Client, at Microsoft. “CA DataMinder Classification addresses the dynamic nature of data. By combining the content classification from CA DataMinder with the access policies set in Windows Server 2012, customers can better protect critical information from inappropriate use or disclosure.”
This integration extends CA Technologies Content-Aware Identity and Access Management (IAM) product strategy, which helps protect critical data from inappropriate use or disclosure by controlling users, their access and how they handle information. CA Technologies first delivered capability for Content-Aware IAM by associating content and data policies with identities and roles managed by CA IdentityMinder™ (formerly CA Identity Manager). It continued its Content-Aware direction earlier this year with a security solution for Microsoft SharePoint that enabled CA SiteMinder® to use content classification information for more precise Web access control.
“A core focus for a security professional is to ensure the right people have the right access to the right information. But information changes more quickly than access rights, which can leave organizations vulnerable to sensitive data leaks,” said Mike Denning, general manager, Security, CA Technologies. “Organizations need a layered security approach where information about the data is used as input for access policies to more precisely determine whether a user should be granted access to information.”
About CA Technologies
CA Technologies (NASDAQ: CA) provides IT management solutions that help customers manage and secure complex IT environments to support agile business services. Organizations leverage CA Technologies software and SaaS solutions to accelerate innovation, transform infrastructure and secure data and identities, from the data center to the cloud. SAP IT Infrastructure Management Software Extends SAP Solution Manager to Enable 360-Degree View of IT Landscapes

Press release:

SAP IT Infrastructure Management Software Extends SAP Solution Manager to Enable 360-Degree View of IT Landscapes

SAP AG (NYSE: SAP) today announced the general availability of SAP IT Infrastructure Management software for end-to-end management, monitoring and coordination of IT infrastructures. The software integrates with the SAP Solution Manager 7.1 application management solution, which now offers customers running on SAP Enterprise Support services a consistent platform for the management of their entire IT landscape. Customers can now manage their whole IT — from enterprise applications and business processes to complex and heterogeneous infrastructures and network landscapes — with SAP Solution Manager.
High-performance IT enables companies to achieve business goals by helping to both uncover potential for optimization and cost reductions and to minimize risks and down time. To reap these benefits, companies need to systematically improve their IT infrastructures by continually capturing, documenting and analyzing corresponding data such as inventory, performance and availability data.
With SAP IT Infrastructure Management, SAP extends SAP Solution Manager with an independent infrastructure component. Customers can benefit from increased transparency into and deeper integration with core IT processes such as incident, problem and change management, as well as technical monitoring and alerting. Operations costs can also be reduced. SAP IT Infrastructure Management automatically identifies vendor-agnostic network components such as routers and servers, as well as uninterruptible power supply (UPS) and storage systems. This allows for comprehensive network management — even in heterogeneous networks. SAP IT Infrastructure Management enhances SAP Solution Manager to make it a complete solution for effective management of heterogeneous IT landscapes among SAP Enterprise Support customers.
SAP IT Infrastructure Management is built on the infrastructure management components of theGuard! product family from Realtech AG, an SAP global technology partner.
"In combination with SAP Solution Manager and SAP Enterprise Support, SAP IT Infrastructure Management allows for end-to-end monitoring of any type of IT components – from PCs, servers and printers to network and storage components," said Uwe Hommel, executive vice president, SAP Active Global Support. Cisco and EMC Take “Three Paths to the Cloud” Strategy to the Next Level

EMC Press Release
Cisco and EMC Take “Three Paths to the Cloud” Strategy to the Next Level
New Joint Reference Architectures, Aligned Channel Incentives and Integrated Customer Support Accelerate VSPEX Momentum New Offerings Support VCE Vblock in Delivering Customers Unmatched Cloud Infrastructure Choice and Flexibility
VMworld – San Francisco, CA - August 28, 2012
Cisco and EMC Corporation (NYSE: EMC) today announced further collaboration to help accelerate IT transformation by providing customers with unrivaled choice and flexibility via "three paths to the cloud" — custom-design infrastructure, validated reference architectures, and pre-integrated converged infrastructure. Cisco® and EMC® introduced new joint reference architectures, aligned channel partner incentives, and integrated customer support to speed customers' path to the cloud.
Building on a decade-long partnership, Cisco and EMC now provide enterprise and service provider customers with an unmatched menu of options to build cloud infrastructure. The "three paths to the cloud" include:

Partnership Highlights:

  • The two new Cisco® Validated Designs (CVD) for EMC VSPEX are unified computing reference architectures tailored to SMB and mid-market customers. Designed to accelerate the journey to the private cloud, the CVDs are Cisco Solutions for EMC VSPEX for Microsoft Hyper-V Architectures andCisco Solutions for EMC VSPEX for VMware vSphere 5.0 Architectures.
  • More than 200 Cisco and EMC Velocity™ channel partners within the global VSPEX community have been trained to resell and deploy EMC VSPEX with Cisco Unified Data Center.
  • Cisco and EMC have also aligned their channel incentive structures to simplify the process of accruing incentives and boost partner profitability.
  • Cisco and EMC have implemented a customer support framework for VSPEX for collaborative case management.
  • VCE — Cisco and EMC's joint venture with VMware — pioneered a groundbreaking integrated data center offering with end-to-end vendor visibility, enabling the leading time-to-market and one of the lowest TCO for converged cloud infrastructure.
  • VCE's fully productized converged infrastructure standardizes processes and life cycle management to significantly improve application availability and enable VCE's unique seamless support experience.
  • VCE continues to gain traction in enterprise data centers as well as in cloud service providers with hundreds of VCE Vblock Systems in production at mission-critical data centers worldwide.
  • VCE demand continues its strong growth in the most recent fiscal quarter and remains on track to reach a $1 billion revenue run rate.

Customer Quotes:

Rajinder Gill, Group Finance Director, Minor, Weir & Willis Ltd
"Our business needed a complete network and infrastructure upgrade in order to implement a new ERP system. VSPEX was an obvious fit for our environment and working closely with Synapse, we reduced our deployment and integration time. The prior validation work performed by Cisco, EMC and Synapse on VSPEX reduced our risk and complexity. Because of the tight integration between EMC, Cisco and VSPEX, we have decided to leverage the VSPEX platform as the primary core of our network and infrastructure for all current and future applications."
Rob Walters, Vice President, Product Management, SunGard Availability Service
"As a service provider we want our development teams working on value-added services that differentiate our offerings in the marketplace, rather than integrating best of breed infrastructure components. Vblock helps us to do that successfully for our multi-tenant enterprise cloud, and the VSPEX reference architectures will make the process of delivering tailored solutions to our customers’ private cloud needs much easier. The collaborative support framework that is part of VSPEX is particularly critical, as it will avoid the difficulties so often encountered with multi-vendor solutions."

Channel Partner Quotes:

Joe Coxon, Business Development Manager, Synapse
"Many of the customers we work with want to deploy a cloud, but aren't quite sure how to do so quickly and easily. VSPEX is a powerful solution that helps us deploy clouds for our customers quickly and efficiently. By leveraging our expert understanding of client requirements, and Cisco's and EMC's industry-leading technologies, we can deliver a complete solution that matches our customers' business needs."
Dave Hart, Executive Vice President and Chief Technology Officer, Presidio
"We deliver the ultimate in choice and flexibility to our customers by offering solutions based on EMC and Cisco technologies. We're seeing a lot of demand for Vblock Systems with larger enterprise and service provider customers and VSPEX configurations allow us to reach a broader market. Both enable us to provide our unique expertise and differentiated value to help customers meet their business requirements."

Cisco Quote:

Rick Snyder, Vice President, Global and Strategic Partners, Cisco
"Cisco and EMC partner every day in the engineering labs and in the field, helping customers around the world transform their data centers and strengthen their business. Through VCE we've unleashed market-moving innovation through the pre-engineered, pre-integrated Vblock Systems. Now, we're working together to meet customer demand with Cisco Validated Designs for EMC VSPEX and aligned channel incentives to accelerate VSPEX adoption."

EMC Quote:

Josh Kahn, Vice President, Solutions Marketing, EMC Corporation
"VCE enables customers to standardize on a converged infrastructure solution, dramatically accelerating their journey to the cloud. We are very pleased with VCE's momentum and the benefits it is delivering to customers around the world. Building upon this, we are very excited to accelerate our partnership with Cisco on VSPEX to address market requirements for best-of-breed reference architectures offered exclusively via the channel. Channel partners are seeking solutions that reduce complexity and simplify the deployment for their customers."

Through a central Web management console, the VMware Horizon Suite will allow IT to customize a service catalog for all company data and applications.  Horizon Suite will understand a user’s attributes and environment (device, location and connectivity level) and enforce policies across applications, data and desktops. This will allow IT to deliver Windows, Android, iOS, Web and SaaS applications in a single workspace and give end-users self-service access to applications and data from anywhere. Horizon Suite alpha will also allow end-users to securely access and share their data and files from any device.
“The dramatic influx of mobile devices and applications is quickly subverting existing IT policy and management,” said Brett Waldman, Senior Research Analyst at IDC. “Modern solutions will need to have an integrated approach that holistically manages users, applications and devices to satisfy radically changing requirements to be well accepted by today’s IT organizations.”
VMware View and Wanova Mirage: Centralized Desktops for the Mobile Workforce
As workers become increasingly mobile, IT must provide anywhere, anytime access to the traditional Windows desktop.  With the recent acquisition of Wanova, VMware and its partner community can now offer centralized desktop management solutions that address the requirements of IT organizations to help them transform legacy Windows desktops into a service:
  • Managing virtual and physical desktops – Hosting desktops in the datacenter using VMware View comes with many benefits including simplified systems and application management, increased security and control, and higher availability and agility. The addition of Wanova Mirage extends the benefits of managing desktops in the cloud by also allowing local system execution on physical desktops and laptops. Mirage clones the images of the endpoints in the datacenter and runs them locally.  This gives customers all the benefits of centralized management and recovery while allowing users to work offline and preserve an uncompromised user experience. Together, these two solutions can support enterprises comprised of any combination of task or knowledge workers.
  • View “Rapid Desktop” program gains momentum – Today, Cisco, Dell, HP, and Intel join the growing eco-system of OEM, technology and channel partners that are helping to develop and sell VMware View appliances. These easy-to-deploy VDI appliances host between 25 and 500 virtual desktops that can be provisioned quickly, making them ideal for small and midsize businesses (SMBs) and scalable for larger organizations.
  • New VMware View solutions – VMware today introduced two new solutions designed to help IT administrators best architect their environment and ensure all components selected work together for quick managed desktop deployment. VMware View Business Process Desktop and Branch Office Desktop have been tested in labs to ensure product interoperability and performance and are supported with reference architectures, tools and services from VMware and VMware technology partners to minimize guesswork around VDI.
“Delivering desktops as a cloud service from the data center using VMware View® makes centralized endpoint management simple and easy,” said Prasad Calyam, research director of networking and virtualization, Ohio Supercomputer Center/OARnet, Ohio State University. “VMware's expanded desktop capability using central image management for local execution with the acquisition of Wanova Mirage™ will offer another way to support mobile workers in an organization."
