GE Healthcare IT Showcases its Latest Innovations at HIMSS Singapore

• Integrated Products Give Comprehensive End to End Radiology Workflow Solution
• Accessibility is Key Theme of Innovations, with Access at the Touch of a Button
• Broad Portfolio Features Radiology, Cardiology, Perinatal, High Acuity Care and Service

SINGAPORE – 17 Sep 2012 – GE Healthcare IT, a division of General Electric Company, will be exhibiting regional firsts among its latest range of IT solutions at this year’s HIMSS AsiaPac12 Conference and Exhibition, from 17-19 September at the Marina Bay Sands, Singapore, on stand #527. Additionally, a full slate of Company experts will be featured as part of the AsiaPac12 conference speaker series.
At the expo, GE Healthcare IT will demonstrate how its broad portfolio is helping to fulfill the needs of its customers, in particular supporting the aim of providing patients with access to high quality healthcare in a cost effective and efficient way.
“The face of healthcare is changing and we are entering a time of ‘collaborative care’ which is a patient-driven, outcomes-driven method of delivering healthcare,” said Mitchell Silong, General Manager, GE Healthcare IT, Asia Pacific. “IT helps make this possible by linking together information from across the healthcare delivery system (inpatient, ambulatory, and home-based) to generate new insights that contribute to improved patient outcomes.”
A key theme running through GE Healthcare IT’s latest innovations is accessibility. Clinicians want to access all types of patient data at the touch of a button from anywhere at any time. In particular, they want to improve work flow and be able to share information and collaborate with other specialists to make clinical decisions more quickly.
“Our IT solutions connect data from across departments, the hospital enterprise and the region to provide a comprehensive view of the patient, and have been developed to give clinicians access to the right, quality information precisely when they need it,” continued Mr. Silong. “This is particularly significant in ASEAN where we are addressing the need for care in remote areas through tele-radiology. We believe moving data, rather than moving the patent is the most efficient way to allow access to the best care available, specifically for rural areas.”
Highlights of the company’s broad portfolio of technologies on display on the GE Healthcare IT stand include:
Radiology
• The GE Centricity* Radiology Information System (RIS), offering the latest generation of community-wide radiology workflow sharing capabilities
• A Web based PACS viewer for global reading across enterprises which is deeply integrated with RIS through a single user interface
• A four-level Vendor Neutral Archive which allows patient records from across different hospitals, to be consolidated and stored using industry standards
• A Clinical Patient Information Viewer which provides access and viewing of patient histories to multi-disciplinary teams throughout the patient’s health community
• Centricity Radiology Mobile Access (CRMA) allows clinicians and radiologists to quickly find images and reports through the AccessNow app, on their mobile device - iPhone, iPod, Touch, android Touch.
High Acuity Care
• The Centricity Perioperative software is highly adaptable management software to streamline workflow and help enhance patient care before, during and after surgery
Cardiology
• Launching for the first time in Asia, Centricity Cardiology Enterprise is a tightly interfaced cardiovascular IT solution that includes both CVIS (Cardiovascular Information System) and CVPACS (Cardiovascular Picture Archiving and Communications System) functionality, providing clinicians full access to a single comprehensive, web-based patient record.
Centricity Perinatal
• A clinical information system that integrates documentation and fetal surveillance to help clinicians deliver the best care to every mother and baby. From labor & delivery to the nursery or neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), the centricity perinatal software interfaces with multiple devices and systems to optimize ease of use and workflows.

GE Healthcare IT CMIO Mark Dente will participate in a panel discussion and presentation in the HIT X.O track. Dr. Dente’s presentation focuses on the shift in healthcare technologies and how the influx of Healthcare IT is impacting each person in a definite way. He’ll deliver his presentation on 18 September from 1400hr – 1430hr and twice on 19 September, from 1015 – 1045 and 1435 – 1520.

GE Healthcare IT Senior Engineer Chris Lindop is scheduled to present in the Interoperability Theater on Next Generation PACS and how it’s impacted by new and emerging global standards. Mr. Lindop is presenting twice on 18 September, 1130 – 1200 and 1630 – 1700, and again on 19 September from 1315-1345.

“In partnership with our Asia Pacific customers, GE Healthcare IT is constantly working to introduce workflow and connectivity solutions to meet their evolving requirements,” said Mr. Silong. “The range of solutions on display at HIMSS AsiaPac12 illustrates the breadth and depth of what we have to offer to help clinicians deliver better quality care for more patients at a lower cost.”

CA Technologies Supports Windows Server 2012 with Data Classification

Press Releases

CA Technologies Supports Windows Server 2012 with Data Classification

Company Extends Content Aware Identity and Access Management Helping Deliver More Precise Access Control for Windows Server
ISLANDIA, NY, September 4, 2012 – CA Technologies (CA: NASDAQ) today announced support for Windows Server 2012 Dynamic Access Control. Integrating CA DataMinder™ Classification with Windows Server 2012 gives customers more precise access control of their data stored on Windows Server, helping to improve information security, reduce risk and meet compliance mandates.
Documents stored on a server that were once classified as non-sensitive can quickly change to contain sensitive or classified information throughout day-to-day operations. CA DataMinder Classification scans, locates and classifies sensitive content stored within Windows Server 2012, including intellectual property, financial information and personally identifiable information such as social security numbers, credit card numbers and other employee relevant data. When used with Windows Server 2012 Dynamic Access Control, CA DataMinder Classification helps to deliver precise and fine-grained access control that enables business processes to continue while protecting the most critical information assets.
“Windows Server 2012 Dynamic Access Control lets customers define central access policies at the organizational level and lets customers control access to data and achieve regulatory compliance,” said Andrew Conway, Director, Product Marketing, Enterprise Client, at Microsoft. “CA DataMinder Classification addresses the dynamic nature of data. By combining the content classification from CA DataMinder with the access policies set in Windows Server 2012, customers can better protect critical information from inappropriate use or disclosure.”
This integration extends CA Technologies Content-Aware Identity and Access Management (IAM) product strategy, which helps protect critical data from inappropriate use or disclosure by controlling users, their access and how they handle information. CA Technologies first delivered capability for Content-Aware IAM by associating content and data policies with identities and roles managed by CA IdentityMinder™ (formerly CA Identity Manager). It continued its Content-Aware direction earlier this year with a security solution for Microsoft SharePoint that enabled CA SiteMinder® to use content classification information for more precise Web access control.
“A core focus for a security professional is to ensure the right people have the right access to the right information. But information changes more quickly than access rights, which can leave organizations vulnerable to sensitive data leaks,” said Mike Denning, general manager, Security, CA Technologies. “Organizations need a layered security approach where information about the data is used as input for access policies to more precisely determine whether a user should be granted access to information.”

New Survey: Likely U.S. Voters Strongly Back Open Video Calling, Want Technologies to Work Together for Job Creation, Social Benefits and Key Services

PRESS RELEASE

New Survey: Likely U.S. Voters Strongly Back Open Video Calling, Want Technologies to Work Together for Job Creation, Social Benefits and Key Services

77 Percent of Likely Voters Believe Video Calling Should be as Easy as Making a Phone Call

Washington, D.C.  –  August 28, 2012 – Nearly four in five likely U.S. voters believe it is important for technologies such as video calling to work together to help create jobs, promote innovation and deliver critical benefits in remote health care, education, business and other services, according to a newly-released survey. In fact, at least two-thirds of Democrats and Republicans alike believe that more jobs will result from open video calling – for instance, dialing a certain number to reach someone on any video system – than if consumers and businesses are forced to  rely on closed systems that can only talk to one another.
In a survey of more than 1,000 likely U.S. voters conducted on behalf of Cisco by Purple Insights, a division of Purple Strategies, 89 percent felt that the ability of two devices or programs made by different companies to communicate with one another – known as interoperability -- was personally important to them, with almost half indicating such communication is extremely important to their use of devices at home or at work. Of respondents, 77 percent want video calling to be as easy as making a phone call is today.
The use of video by consumers, government and business is growing at a staggering rate.  According to the Cisco Visual Networking Index, in just three years, one million video minutes (the equivalent of 674 days) will traverse the Internet every second.  Use of video calling services is also increasing.  For instance, on February 27th of this year,Skype reported that 34 million people were using the service at one time.
As video collaboration becomes increasingly mainstream, multiple vendors will have to work together to enable global scale and broad customer choice like consumers have today with phone, Internet and email. Currently, not all video calling technologies work together.  Cisco's TelePresence® and many other video communications products connect using the same standards-based "language." Unfortunately, one of the most popular consumer video calling services, Microsoft's Skype, relies on proprietary standards, which hinders Skype's more than 600 million users from calling non-Skype users, and prevents businesses from reaching them via systems that offer services such as health care and job training by remote video.
Cisco is a strong advocate of video communications using underlying technologies based on open standards agreed upon by credible standards bodies open to all interested industry participants, a framework that has been used successfully to create the standards that underlie the Internet, email and voice calling. With this approach, anyone who adopts an open standard is assured of basic interoperability that is not controlled by any single commercial vendor.
Key Highlights of Survey
  • 87 percent of respondents want companies to agree to a common standard for video calling so that programs will work together
  • 77 percent believe that video calling should be as easy as making a phone call
  • Two-thirds, regardless of party affiliation, believe more jobs and innovation will be created with open and interoperable video
  • 83 percent (67 percent strongly) want Skype to be interoperable with other video technologies
  • 63 percent agree that innovation is how companies grow, how new companies start and how prices are kept down. If one company, such as Skype, controls a majority of the video calling market and does not make its product interoperable, respondents believe that will cut off innovation, slowing the growth of technology jobs and increasing prices.
  • Purple Insights, a division of Purple Strategies, conducted 1008 telephone interviews nationwide of likely voters in the 2012 general election for president from August 8 – 15, 2012.  755 interviews were conducted with respondents via landlines; 253 interviews were conducted with respondents on their cell phones. Margin of error for this study is +/- 3.1%
Supporting Quotes
Marthin De Beer, Senior Vice President, Cisco Video & Collaboration Group
"Video is the most engaging medium and its use in every aspect of our lives is growing exponentially. Consumers and business users alike today are demanding that video communications solutions work together and that making a video call be as seamless and easy as making a phone call.  This is about freedom of choice, and we the technology industry must rally around open standards, as we did so effectively with telephone service, the Internet and email. Only with a truly open video community will we fully reap the economic and social benefits of this transformational technology."
Purple Strategies partners, Alex Castellanos and Steve McMahon, jointly noted:
"As a Republican and as a Democrat, we each believe – and it is clear from Purple's data – that all ends of the political spectrum want to be able to communicate as freely as possible. Whether they use video at home or at work, they understand that's where the world is headed and they don't want to be scheduled for a video-to-video job interview and have everything go wrong. We think it's clear to people that video communication is or will soon be a ‘must have,' not a ‘nice to have'. "

Alstom and Cisco to Develop Secure Digital Substation Automation Solution

PRESS RELEASE

Alstom and Cisco to Develop Secure Digital Substation Automation Solution

CIGRE 2012, Paris, France – August 28, 2012 – Alstom Grid and Cisco today announced the signing of a commercial and technology agreement to develop the next generation of digital substation solutions for electrical grids. This collaboration utilizes Alstom's smart grid expertise in digital substation solutions with Cisco's leadership in connected grid solutions and Internet Protocol (IP) communication technologies; together providing a solution that further supports the industry's grid modernization efforts.
The solution, which integrates Cisco's ruggedized substation-grade Connected Grid™ routers and switches with communications and cyber-security functions along with Alstom's cutting edge DS Agile™ control system for substation automation, will create a new level of IP-based communication performance for integrated cyber security, distributed monitoring and controls.  This will provide key energy and information transfer hubs within modern grid architectures.
The benefits for electric utilities and substation operators include:
  1. Enhanced security in smart grid-enabled digital substations: The Alstom-Cisco solution can enable utility operators to provide comprehensive protection to address security policies, manage user access to critical resources, and the ability to detect and mitigate possible cyber attacks across the entire grid infrastructure. The digital substation architecture incorporates comprehensive security controls based on NIST (National Institute of Standards and Technology) and IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission) recommendations.
  1. Enhanced operational efficiency through optimized automation architecture: This layered architectural approach can provide optimal deployment for substation automation and the design phase of technology implementation. It also allows easy design and integration of communication infrastructure with the critical protection and control, asset monitoring and grid management equipment. The intelligence within the validated digital substation schemes can allow close monitoring of the load capacity of plant equipment and permits operation of grid equipment closer to their limits. Additionally, the substation network supports existing and new communication standards such as IEC 61850, as well as the prioritization of control data traffic over non-operations data traffic.
  1. Reduced operations and maintenance costs: The digital substation solution, based on Cisco's multi-service network and Alstom's next generation IEDs, will provide utilities the flexibility to deploy multiple applications over a common network infrastructure. The solution uses a layered architecture approach, enabling it to support both wired and wireless communications over the same converged network. The solution allows asset managers to implement preventive maintenance programs resulting in longer asset life and lower maintenance costs.   The solution also provides intelligent systems for substation operators to monitor and control all substation assets for optimizing operations costs.
Patrick Plas, Senior Vice-President Grid Power and Automation, Alstom Grid said, "this collaboration between Alstom and Cisco brings our digital substation offering to yet another level of performance and reliability for our customers. We very much look forward to implementing its next steps and move towards the commercial roll-out of the solutions."
"Cisco has always recognized the need to develop sustainable agreements in the effort to achieve a smarter grid. Cisco's collaboration with Alstom makes available two sets of complementary technologies that will help our customers to secure their operations, achieve cost savings and extract greater value from existing technology infrastructure. Press Releases

BroadCloud Delivers Flexible and Scalable Disaster Recovery Services Built on CA ARCserve

CA Technologies Solution Helps Managed IT Infrastructure Provider Meet SLAs, Maximize Efficiency and Reduce Costs
ISLANDIA, N.Y., August 27, 2102 – CA Technologies (NASDAQ: CA)  today announced that BroadCloud, a leading managed IT infrastructure provider, is using CA ARCserve® to provide comprehensive disaster recovery (DR) services to help customers ensure that data is secure and highly available.
BroadCloud provides managed hosting, managed services, co-location and high-value data management solutions that help customers address four key challenges: data resilience, business and technology alignment, transformation risks and compliance.
BroadCloud’s business is increasingly focused on public, hybrid and private cloud services, which are delivered from more than 60 data centers worldwide. The company provides specially designed private cloud services from high-security facilities that help customers comply with HIPAA, SOX, FISMAN and data protection regulations.
• Meet service level agreements, which are critical to its reputation and customer satisfaction;
• Maximize efficiency, which enables the company to manage disaster recovery processes for hundreds of customers with just 40 engineers; and
• Meet customer needs around costs and compliance.
BroadCloud was using a range of tools from a number of suppliers to support its recovery management services, due to the diversity of the systems being protected and customer preferences. This time-consuming approach added to the company’s service management burden.
“With CA ARCserve, our disaster recovery processes are now fully automated and require minimal manual intervention,” said Brent Eubanks, executive vice president of Strategic Services at BroadCloud. “We can provision new customers with the level of recovery management they need very quickly. The ability to provide cost-effective and compliant recovery management services enhances our competitive advantage and helps us retain and attract customers from a range of industries.”
BroadCloud is using CA ARCserve to underpin its multi-tier recovery management and data resiliency services. The company protects several petabytes of data using the solutions, which enable simple centralized recovery management across its client base.
“CA ARCserve solutions enable us to back up and restore data from the cloud very easily,” said Eubanks. “They are ideal for those customer systems that need to be recovered within a few hours.”
To support more demanding customer workloads, such as email, ERP (enterprise resource planning) and CRM (customer relationship management) systems, BroadCloud uses CA ARCserve® Replication and CA ARCserve® High Availability.
“With real-time replication and high availability clusters, we can fail over between data centers in minutes to ensure that customer systems suffer negligible downtime in the event of an incident,” said Eubanks.
“Service providers face especially challenging objectives when it comes to scalably, reliably and resource-efficiently protecting large volumes of distributed data,” said Steve Fairbanks, vice president, Data Management, CA Technologies.  “BroadCloud's success highlights just how well-suited CA ARCserve is for these highly challenging environments—and how broadly applicable it is for all kinds of data protection needs.”

The Pennsylvania State University Transforms Technology Education and Enhances Infrastructure Through NetApp’s Education Donation Program

University’s Center for Enterprise Architecture Creates New Program for the Next Generation of CIOs, CTOs
University Park, PA. – August 24, 2012 –The Pennsylvania State University is known internationally as one of the best public research universities in the United States, with total enrollment approaching 100,000 students. It ranks no. 1 in the United States among universities with information technology degrees. The Penn State College of Information Sciences and Technology has created a unique interdisciplinary program in enterprise architecture that integrates computer science, information technology, and business. The Center for Enterprise Architecture (CEA) needed storage capacity to support this important technology-intensive research agenda and the degree programs. The CEA is in the process of creating an innovative lab environment and was thrilled to be approached by NetApp to participate in NetApp’s Education Donation Program. NetApp’s program has already awarded over 100 systems in the past 6 months to universities and K–12 institutions that demonstrated an innovative approach to education. Penn State received a $250,000 Storage System and Software award for the Center for Enterprise Architecture.
As one of the most well-known learning institutions globally, Penn State holds nurturing and creating progress in professional practices as a critical element of its mission. Through its donation to Penn State’s College of Information Sciences and Technology and its Center for Enterprise Architecture, NetApp has enabled the university to better support this mission. Prior to NetApp’s engagement with Penn State, the CEA had limited resources for data storage, preventing the center from leveraging its full academic and research potential. By deploying NetApp® solutions with a consolidated enterprise approach to storage, the Center for Enterprise Architecture will have the capabilities to support the future storage needs of its students and faculty and its new Professional Masters in Enterprise Architecture Program.
In recognition of NetApp’s donation to the Center for Enterprise Architecture, Dean David Hall of the College of Information Sciences and Technology met with NetApp executives earlier this summer. NetApp’s equipment will be deployed as part of a new educational laboratory environment in which students will be able to perform research and participate in hands-on learning experiences. The NetApp system offers Penn State the flexibility, performance, availability, and responsiveness to growth needed to provide ample capacity to address both research and infrastructure demands.
"With the equipment we received through NetApp’s Education Donation Program, we will have cutting-edge technologies available to our researchers and advanced educational programs, including the new Professional Masters in Enterprise Architecture Program," said Dr. Brian Cameron, executive director, Center for Enterprise Architecture. "We are very excited to be working with NetApp, and with their technologies we can quickly start to engage our students in hands-on, practical research and educational scenarios to expose them to a real-world storage and information architecture environment."
In today’s challenging economic and competitive environment, the need for greater efficiency, effectiveness, and agility is crucial for organizations of all types and sizes.  Enterprise architecture professionals are at the forefront of this movement, striving to correctly and effectively leverage technology to meet the business goals of an organization. These professionals need to integrate strategic, business, and technology planning methods with an ability to understand, analyze, justify, and communicate the solution of enterprise architecture problems. To meet the increased demand for enterprise architecture professionals, Penn State has developed the Master of Professional Studies Program in Enterprise Architecture through the College of Information Sciences and Technology.
"Penn State’s Center for Enterprise Architecture is among the most innovative and unique information technology degree programs being offered by universities today. Its curriculum aligns closely with NetApp’s vision for the future of high-performance, data-driven information technologies," said Regina Kunkle, vice president of State and Local Government and Higher Education, NetApp. "Creative innovation in education and technology will be vitally important as we increasingly rely on storage technologies to provide the backbone of critical government and business infrastructure. Penn State is leading the charge to educate future CIOs and CTOs with this in mind. We hope that, through NetApp’s Education Donation Program, students will have unprecedented access to our technology to support their education goals and facilitate continued advancement in storage and IT performance."

Customers Transform IT with VMware vCloud®

Customers Transform IT with VMware vCloud®

VMware and Service Providers Enable Customers Across Industries to Successfully Accelerate Delivery of Reliable, High-Performance Secure Clouds

PALO ALTO, Calif., Aug. 22, 2012 — VMware, Inc. (NYSE: VMW), the global leader in virtualization and cloud infrastructure, today announced continued momentum of its customers deploying public and hybrid clouds based on VMware cloud solutions. VMware vCloud® technologies and cloud services enable customers to achieve a wide range of business benefits such as reduced IT costs, improved security and increased flexibility.
"VMware customers are looking to deploy reliable, high-performance, secure clouds that are compatible with their existing applications and datacenter operations. VMware and its partners are uniquely positioned to deliver this,” said Mathew Lodge, vice president, cloud services, VMware. “Today VMware has the broadest cloud ecosystem and the rapid adoption of vCloud services  by customers – triple digit growth in year-over-year VSPP bookings in 2011 and 2012 to date -- is a true testament to the value that the vCloud ecosystem delivers.”
VMware and its service providers cater to a variety of use cases ranging from compute resources for pre-production environments to seasonal and transient workloads to disaster recovery in the cloud. VMware customers who have recently adopted cloud computing to transform their IT environments include Columbia Sportswear Company, eMix (Electronic Medical Information Exchange), Star Alliance and Subaru of America, Inc.
Columbia Sportswear Company
Based in Portland, Oregon, Columbia Sportswear is the worldwide leader in outerwear, sportswear apparel and accessories and has over 4,000 employees and 50 locations. Nearly 100 percent virtualized, Columbia Sportswear first looked to the public cloud to have the option of moving workloads outside the facility to prevent downtime during disasters or datacenter moves. They wanted the flexibility to move workloads seamlessly from their private cloud to their vCloud-based ecosystem provider.
Two real-life scenarios that Columbia experienced reinforced the need for a cloud model centered on the Japanese tsunami in 2011, which caused continuous power outages to their Tokyo-based facility. First, had a cloud model been in place, the ability to move the data out of the region temporarily would have improved operations and allowed for local staff to access their data remotely. Second, office and datacenter moves shouldn’t necessarily affect access to data and therefore, the need to temporarily park workloads somewhere else without disruption would have allowed for greater productivity. Columbia Sportswear now moves workloads seamlessly from their private cloud to their vCloud provider, having control of where workloads live.
“We are very pleased with how easy it has been to deploy VMware vCloud to meet our rapidly growing business requirements, allowing us to scale instantly and reduce infrastructure costs,” said Michael Leeper, senior manager, global IT engineering, Columbia Sportswear Company.
eMix
Tasked with providing a highly available, secure platform for hospital providers to share medical information, eMix is replacing the need for CDs, DVDs and VPN connections, bringing healthcare communications into the 21st century on the foundation of VMware vCloud.  eMix collaborated with iLand, 2012 “Global Service Provider Partner of the Year,” to build a public cloud solution that provides massive scalability as well as a holistic approach to security when exchanging medical imaging data between proprietary IT systems. One eMix customer reported an average savings of $14,000- $18,000 per emergency room visit as a result of the cloud.
“The importance of having VMware compatibility and the need to partner with a service provider that can address HIPAA compliancy was a priority when considering a cloud solution,” said Florent Saint-Clair, vice president, corporate development, DR Systems and general manager, eMix (division of DR Systems). “With VMware’s vCloud solution the adoption curve has been accelerating tremendously, and we expect that the growth over the past two years, which was from zero to five hundred customers, will accelerate even further.”
VMware customers to share their cloud stories at VMworld
IT executives from Fortune 1000 and mid-market companies using VMware vCloud will gather on stage at VMworld in San Francisco, Calif. on Aug. 27, 2012 at 2:30 PM to discuss why they chose a hybrid cloud solution and share their use cases and deployment outcomes, including infrastructure, security, provider selection, and results. The session, “Industry Leaders Share the Impact of Their Cloud Deployments (session CSM2258),” will be moderated by Paul Strong, CTO, global customer and field initiatives, VMware and will be open to audience questions. Register here to attend this session at VMworld San Francisco.
VMware Service Provider Program (VSPP) and vCloud Services
The VMware Service Provider Program (VSPP) is for partners offering cloud computing and hosted IT services built on VMware cloud infrastructure. There are over 8,500 partners in the program to date.
VMware vCloud Services offer a broad array of VMware-compatible infrastructure clouds built on a secure platform and delivered by vCloud service providers, enabling customers to easily extend, manage and scale their datacenter workloads to a public cloud. With more than 150 certified VMware vCloud Services in 29 countries, VMware and VSPP partners together form the number two public cloud ecosystem in the world.
