Full Story:

EMC Corporation (NYSE:EMC) today announced the EMC® Storage Resource Management (SRM) Suite, delivering storage and application administrators application-to-storage management for cloud environments. For instance, now storage administrators can easily view what their Oracle or Microsoft SQL Server counterparts are concerned about — enabling common insight and alignment of priorities to improve the efficiency and simplify management of the overall IT environment. The EMC SRM Suite optimizes resource investments, enabling customers to move to more agile, cloud-enabled environments.
The EMC SRM Suite is a comprehensive storage management suite comprised of EMC ProSphere®, EMC Storage Configuration Advisor and EMC Watch4net, the most recent addition to EMC's portfolio, providing greatly improved reporting flexibility. The SRM Suite will provide performance, capacity and configuration management for EMC arrays — including EMC VMAX®, EMC VNX®, EMC VPLEX®, EMC Isilon®, and EMC DataDomain® — as well as select third party storage arrays for both file and block.
Virtualization enables businesses of all sizes to simplify management, control costs and guarantee uptime. However, virtualized environments also add layers of complexity to the IT infrastructure that reduce visibility and can complicate the management of storage resources. The SRM Suite attacks these layers — simply — by providing visibility into the physical and virtual relationships, which are essential to ensure consistent service levels. As customers build out their cloud infrastructure, the EMC SRM Suite will help organizations ensure service levels while optimizing IT resources — both key attributes of successful cloud deployments.

Technology Highlights:

Key features of the EMC SRM Suite include:
  • Dynamic real-time reporting: increased visibility of all resources and performance dependencies from the application to the host, down to the storage array.
  • Metric correlation: analyze application performance through trending and threshold notifications and correlate these with storage metrics.
  • Service-level compliance: manage and respond to service-level deviations through custom thresholds and dashboards across heterogeneous storage.
  • FAST VP (Fully Automated Storage Tiering for Virtual Pools) optimization: analyze the usage of FAST to meet customer-defined performance and chargeback policies by application.
  • Storage service alignment: analyze storage workload trends to align storage tiers to application service levels.
  • Configuration compliance: automatically validate configurations, leveraging the EMC Support Matrix and customer-defined design best practices.

Industry Analyst Quote:

Bob Laliberte, Senior Analyst, Enterprise Strategy Group
"The EMC SRM Suite is helping customers continue to transform themselves into cloud-enabled businesses simply and cost-effectively. Companies need to ensure that the appropriate service levels are being delivered to a wide range of applications, even with rapidly growing, changing and complex IT environments. With the SRM Suite, EMC is helping businesses understand the big picture of how storage impacts their applications—a critical ability for any company with highly virtualized/cloud environments."

Customer Quotes:

Johan Marais, Storage & Virtualization Administrator, Discovery Holding, LTD.
"The combination of these three products will allow us to have a full 360 degree view of our storage infrastructure. ProSphere has given us great insight into our current storage environment capacity and performance wise. Adding Storage Configuration Advisor will allow us to have a better hold on storage changes and assist us in applying recommended standards. Completing the solution with Watch4net will give us sight into application health and performance all the way to the storage layer allowing us to adhere to stricter SLA's."
Sarel Theron, Senior SAN Engineer, Cloud Data Management, Internet Solutions
"With the rapid data growth we are experiencing, we must understand our existing as well as future workloads to make sure we are applying the right technology to meet service levels. To do so, we have to understand the relationships, dependencies and impact of systems connecting to storage in real-time. We need one of those 'vital signs' monitors you get in a hospital connected to our SAN. EMC's new SRM Suite appears to be just that."

EMC Executive Quote:

Amitabh Srivastava, President, Advanced Storage Division, EMC
"By analyzing performance, capacity and configuration compliance in a simple and easy-to-manage suite, EMC is offering customers a better way to maximize their storage investments. As organizations adopt cloud enabling technologies like VMware and FAST VP to create a more agile infrastructure, this new suite provides the visibility and control that ensure application service levels while optimizing storage resources to control costs. It also gives customers the flexibility to manage EMC or third party arrays with file or block storage."

VMware Showcases Advancements in End User Computing at VMworld® 2012

Company offers first look at the VMware Horizon™ Suite, an integrated platform for the Mobile Workforce

VMware demonstrates holistic solution to deliver legacy desktops as a centrally managed service harnessing VMware View® and Wanova Mirage™

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif., Aug. 28, 2012 — Today at VMworld® 2012, VMware, Inc. (NYSE: VMW), the global leader in virtualization and cloud infrastructure, previewed the alpha version of the VMware Horizon™ Suite, a new platform that will offer a flexible corporate workspace in the cloud for mobile workers to connect from anywhere using any device.  VMware also demonstrated how the combination of VMware View® and Wanova Mirage™ will enable customers to transform the legacy Windows desktop for the cloud era.
“Migration to Windows 7 and 8, bring your own device (BYOD), and the cloud are challenging IT organizations with new complexities and risks,” said Boaz Chalamish, senior vice president and general manager, End-User Computing, VMware.  “VMware’s continued investment and innovation in end-user computing will help IT organizations free the desktop, redefine the corporate workspace and embrace a new way of working in the post-PC era.”
Introducing the Horizon Suite: The Platform for the Mobile Workforce
As IT organizations struggle to manage devices, applications, data and users in the post-PC era, they need solutions that will help them evolve from managing devices to managing user experiences across multiple devices. Today, VMware demonstrated the alpha of the VMware Horizon Suite, showcasing how it will help customers deliver the multi-device workspace and give end-users secure access to applications and data from anywhere.
The VMware Horizon Suite will bring together technologies from Project Octopus, Project AppBlast, ThinApp, VMware Horizon Application Manager™ and VMware Horizon Mobile™ into a truly integrated management platform for the mobile workforce. The VMware Horizon Suite will provide a flexible platform that uniquely combines the principles of identity, context and policy to separate personal and business workspaces, enable consistent access to applications and data across any personal device.
Through a central Web management console, the VMware Horizon Suite will allow IT to customize a service catalog for all company data and applications.  Horizon Suite will understand a user’s attributes and environment (device, location and connectivity level) and enforce policies across applications, data and desktops. This will allow IT to deliver Windows, Android, iOS, Web and SaaS applications in a single workspace and give end-users self-service access to applications and data from anywhere. Horizon Suite alpha will also allow end-users to securely access and share their data and files from any device.
“The dramatic influx of mobile devices and applications is quickly subverting existing IT policy and management,” said Brett Waldman, Senior Research Analyst at IDC. “Modern solutions will need to have an integrated approach that holistically manages users, applications and devices to satisfy radically changing requirements to be well accepted by today’s IT organizations.”
VMware View and Wanova Mirage: Centralized Desktops for the Mobile Workforce
As workers become increasingly mobile, IT must provide anywhere, anytime access to the traditional Windows desktop.  With the recent acquisition of Wanova, VMware and its partner community can now offer centralized desktop management solutions that address the requirements of IT organizations to help them transform legacy Windows desktops into a service:
  • Managing virtual and physical desktops – Hosting desktops in the datacenter using VMware View comes with many benefits including simplified systems and application management, increased security and control, and higher availability and agility. The addition of Wanova Mirage extends the benefits of managing desktops in the cloud by also allowing local system execution on physical desktops and laptops. Mirage clones the images of the endpoints in the datacenter and runs them locally.  This gives customers all the benefits of centralized management and recovery while allowing users to work offline and preserve an uncompromised user experience. Together, these two solutions can support enterprises comprised of any combination of task or knowledge workers.
  • View “Rapid Desktop” program gains momentum – Today, Cisco, Dell, HP, and Intel join the growing eco-system of OEM, technology and channel partners that are helping to develop and sell VMware View appliances. These easy-to-deploy VDI appliances host between 25 and 500 virtual desktops that can be provisioned quickly, making them ideal for small and midsize businesses (SMBs) and scalable for larger organizations.
  • New VMware View solutions – VMware today introduced two new solutions designed to help IT administrators best architect their environment and ensure all components selected work together for quick managed desktop deployment. VMware View Business Process Desktop and Branch Office Desktop have been tested in labs to ensure product interoperability and performance and are supported with reference architectures, tools and services from VMware and VMware technology partners to minimize guesswork around VDI.
“Delivering desktops as a cloud service from the data center using VMware View® makes centralized endpoint management simple and easy,” said Prasad Calyam, research director of networking and virtualization, Ohio Supercomputer Center/OARnet, Ohio State University. “VMware's expanded desktop capability using central image management for local execution with the acquisition of Wanova Mirage™ will offer another way to support mobile workers in an organization."

AXTEL Turns to IBM for Smarter Computing Overhaul

Press release:

AXTEL Turns to IBM for Smarter Computing Overhaul

Communications provider builds new IT infrastructure with IBM Power Systems, XIV storage systems, for greater virtualization, efficiency, and scalability
Armonk, N.Y. - 27 Aug 2012:
IBM (NYSE: IBM) announced that AXTEL, a leading telecommunications service provider in Mexico, has turned to IBM for a complete overhaul of its IT infrastructure to support the company’s vigorous expansion into new markets and an ever-growing customer base.
AXTEL, which provides communications services to more than one million customers in 39 cities across the country, has been growing rapidly since it was founded in 1994. As the company has grown so too has its business challenges. In addition to having to support more customers in more markets with additional services, AXTEL needed to improve its customer relationship capabilities to enable cross- and up-selling more effectively.
To solve this multidimensional problem, AXTEL selected IBM to re-architect its infrastructure of servers and storage devices with IBM Power Systems and IBM advanced storage systems. In addition to improving overall system performance and efficiency, and lowering costs, AXTEL was looking for seamless integration with the company’s SAP installation.
“We have had SAP successfully in place for several years now,” said Gaspar Rivera del Valle, IT Evolution Director at AXTEL. “The move to an all-IBM infrastructure created a synergy with our SAP platform that allowed us to achieve our business goals.”
Working with IBM and IBM Business Partner, Genesys, AXTEL deployed IBM Power Systems built with IBM BladeCenter servers. For the storage overhaul, the company deployed IBM System Storage DS8300 and IBM XIV Storage Systems, virtualized using IBM System Storage SAN Volume Controller.
Moving to the combined IBM server and storage infrastructure has already improved AXTEL’s application performance by 60 percent, enhanced its system availability, and significantly improved the overall level of service to the business, Rivera del Valle said. Backed by a reliable, high-performance platform for business applications, AXTEL can serve the company's growing customer base more effectively and at a lower cost.
“AXTEL understands that the right technologies, applied strategically, can help organizations achieve real business goals,” said Natalia de Greiff, IBM Mexico & LCR STG Executive. “This philosophy is the basis of our Smarter Computing approach to IT.”
