Lenovo Acquires Stoneware to Expand Secure Cloud Computing

Press release:

Lenovo Acquires Stoneware to Expand Secure Cloud Computing

Lenovo grows its technology portfolio and advances its PC Plus strategy
Stoneware brings substantial experience and expertise in secure cloud computing
RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C. and Carmel, IN, September 18, 2012: Lenovo (HKSE: 992) (ADR: LNVGY) today announced the acquisition of Stoneware Inc., to enhance and expand its cloud computing solutions, a key component of Lenovo’s product portfolio. Stoneware has built a strong, profitable, and growing business by delivering innovative software technologies, which are helping people and organizations make the complex environment of cloud computing that much simpler.

As a result of this acquisition, Lenovo will add significant new technologies and accelerate its capabilities for both commercial and consumer cloud offerings, particularly the ability to provide secure content across multiple devices in education and government.

Lenovo’s product portfolio will benefit from the experience and expertise of the Stoneware team. Stoneware already has several strong, highly innovative cloud products – including webNetwork and LanSchool – that serve millions of users primarily in education and the public sector. Lenovo will help extend the reach of these products as well as new offerings through its global reach as the world’s second largest PC maker and number one commercial laptop company. Lenovo will also help develop the opportunity to extend this technology, beyond the current strongholds that Stoneware has in government and in education, into more consumer-focused offerings over time.

“Adding Stoneware cloud computing into the Lenovo line up presents a significant opportunity to leverage their success, and enhance our PC Plus offerings, all to the benefit of our customers,“ said Peter Hortensius, senior vice president, and president, Product Group, Lenovo. “We have a history of innovation and embracing new technologies, and the talented team at Stoneware will fit in perfectly with our long-term strategy.

With today’s typical technology user carrying multiple devices, the PC Plus era is here, and Lenovo is aggressively expanding its product offerings and capabilities to help people and businesses connect across any device to the content and communities that matter most to them. Customers simply want a better way to connect their PC with their tablet with their smartphone, and with Stoneware, Lenovo aims to help them get there.

The purchase of Stoneware is critical to Lenovo’s broader PC Plus strategy. As a recognized leader in PCs, with the momentum of an expanding tablet and smartphone business and a newly formed joint venture with EMC, Lenovo aims to offer end-to-end secure solutions to business customers and compelling cloud-based technology to consumers.

“We are pleased to be joining forces with Lenovo”, said Rick German, CEO, Stoneware. “Lenovo is one of the largest and fastest growing technology companies in the world and for Stoneware, a small company with roots in the heartland of the United States, we are delighted to be given the opportunity to deliver real benefit to customers on a global stage.”

While financial terms of the deal were not disclosed, the acquisition is not material to Lenovo’s earnings. Stoneware has 67 employees, located in either Indiana or Salt Lake City, Utah. As part of this agreement, it is expected that all U.S.-based Stoneware employees will join Lenovo, and that there will be no job losses as a result of today’s announcement.

The acquisition is expected to be completed by the end of 2012 and in the coming weeks the Stoneware team will be fully integrated into Lenovo. The Stoneware team will remain in Indiana and Utah and will continue to sell both webNetwork and LanSchool while serving customers and partners with the same level of dedication and excellence.

VMware Showcases Advancements in End User Computing at VMworld® 2012

VMware Showcases Advancements in End User Computing at VMworld® 2012

Company offers first look at the VMware Horizon™ Suite, an integrated platform for the Mobile Workforce

VMware demonstrates holistic solution to deliver legacy desktops as a centrally managed service harnessing VMware View® and Wanova Mirage™

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif., Aug. 28, 2012 — Today at VMworld® 2012, VMware, Inc. (NYSE: VMW), the global leader in virtualization and cloud infrastructure, previewed the alpha version of the VMware Horizon™ Suite, a new platform that will offer a flexible corporate workspace in the cloud for mobile workers to connect from anywhere using any device.  VMware also demonstrated how the combination of VMware View® and Wanova Mirage™ will enable customers to transform the legacy Windows desktop for the cloud era.
“Migration to Windows 7 and 8, bring your own device (BYOD), and the cloud are challenging IT organizations with new complexities and risks,” said Boaz Chalamish, senior vice president and general manager, End-User Computing, VMware.  “VMware’s continued investment and innovation in end-user computing will help IT organizations free the desktop, redefine the corporate workspace and embrace a new way of working in the post-PC era.”
Introducing the Horizon Suite: The Platform for the Mobile Workforce
As IT organizations struggle to manage devices, applications, data and users in the post-PC era, they need solutions that will help them evolve from managing devices to managing user experiences across multiple devices. Today, VMware demonstrated the alpha of the VMware Horizon Suite, showcasing how it will help customers deliver the multi-device workspace and give end-users secure access to applications and data from anywhere.
The VMware Horizon Suite will bring together technologies from Project Octopus, Project AppBlast, ThinApp, VMware Horizon Application Manager™ and VMware Horizon Mobile™ into a truly integrated management platform for the mobile workforce. The VMware Horizon Suite will provide a flexible platform that uniquely combines the principles of identity, context and policy to separate personal and business workspaces, enable consistent access to applications and data across any personal device.
Through a central Web management console, the VMware Horizon Suite will allow IT to customize a service catalog for all company data and applications.  Horizon Suite will understand a user’s attributes and environment (device, location and connectivity level) and enforce policies across applications, data and desktops. This will allow IT to deliver Windows, Android, iOS, Web and SaaS applications in a single workspace and give end-users self-service access to applications and data from anywhere. Horizon Suite alpha will also allow end-users to securely access and share their data and files from any device.
“The dramatic influx of mobile devices and applications is quickly subverting existing IT policy and management,” said Brett Waldman, Senior Research Analyst at IDC. “Modern solutions will need to have an integrated approach that holistically manages users, applications and devices to satisfy radically changing requirements to be well accepted by today’s IT organizations.”
VMware View and Wanova Mirage: Centralized Desktops for the Mobile Workforce
As workers become increasingly mobile, IT must provide anywhere, anytime access to the traditional Windows desktop.  With the recent acquisition of Wanova, VMware and its partner community can now offer centralized desktop management solutions that address the requirements of IT organizations to help them transform legacy Windows desktops into a service:
  • Managing virtual and physical desktops – Hosting desktops in the datacenter using VMware View comes with many benefits including simplified systems and application management, increased security and control, and higher availability and agility. The addition of Wanova Mirage extends the benefits of managing desktops in the cloud by also allowing local system execution on physical desktops and laptops. Mirage clones the images of the endpoints in the datacenter and runs them locally.  This gives customers all the benefits of centralized management and recovery while allowing users to work offline and preserve an uncompromised user experience. Together, these two solutions can support enterprises comprised of any combination of task or knowledge workers.
  • View “Rapid Desktop” program gains momentum – Today, Cisco, Dell, HP, and Intel join the growing eco-system of OEM, technology and channel partners that are helping to develop and sell VMware View appliances. These easy-to-deploy VDI appliances host between 25 and 500 virtual desktops that can be provisioned quickly, making them ideal for small and midsize businesses (SMBs) and scalable for larger organizations.
  • New VMware View solutions – VMware today introduced two new solutions designed to help IT administrators best architect their environment and ensure all components selected work together for quick managed desktop deployment. VMware View Business Process Desktop and Branch Office Desktop have been tested in labs to ensure product interoperability and performance and are supported with reference architectures, tools and services from VMware and VMware technology partners to minimize guesswork around VDI.
“Delivering desktops as a cloud service from the data center using VMware View® makes centralized endpoint management simple and easy,” said Prasad Calyam, research director of networking and virtualization, Ohio Supercomputer Center/OARnet, Ohio State University. “VMware's expanded desktop capability using central image management for local execution with the acquisition of Wanova Mirage™ will offer another way to support mobile workers in an organization."

The beta version of Horizon Suite is expected to be available in Q4 2012.
VMware View Business Process Desktop is available immediately and Branch Office Desktop will be available in Q4 2012. For more information about VMware View solutions, visit http://www.vmware.com/solutions/desktop/.

Cardiologist Warns on St. Jude Heart Device

By BARRY MEIER and KATIE THOMAS

A cardiologist who studies the safety of heart devices said surgeons should stop using a component sold by St. Jude Medical until more is known about the long-term safety of the device.

The cardiologist, Dr. Robert G. Hauser of Abbott Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis, made his comments as a study he conducted was published online. His research suggests that a proprietary material used by St. Jude to coat wires that connect an implanted defibrillator to a patient’s heart is breaking down prematurely and, in some cases, leading to failure of the device. The study was published by EP Europace, a British cardiology journal.

St. Jude began using the coating, which is known as Optim, several years ago as a means of better protecting its leads from abrasion. But Dr. Hauser said a troubling number of cases had been reported to the Food and Drug Administration in which the Optim coating appeared to fail.

“There is no need to use this lead until we have more confidence in its performance,” he said in an interview Monday.

The company has vigorously defended the safety of Optim and its current defibrillator lead, which is known as the Durata and has been implanted in an estimated 278,000 patients worldwide, according to St. Jude.

In a statement Tuesday, the company noted that leads from all manufacturers can fail and said the Optim coating is 50 times more resistant to abrasion than silicone, the standard coating. St. Jude also said its product registries are monitoring 11,000 patients with the company’s current generation of leads, and it recently announced that it would follow patients in the registry with Optim-coated leads “indefinitely.”

Windows 8 Tablets: Just as Crisp as the iPad's Retina?

Windows 8 specs include displays that are even sharper than Apple's fabled Retina display, which Apple claims is as clear as the human eye is capable of seeing.

Microsoft's newest operating system supports a 10.1-inch tablet screen with 291 pixels per inch resolution, the company says in its Building Windows 8 blog. That compares to the new iPad with 265 ppi.

Paper Explains the Business Impact of Application Performance and Why End-User Experience is the Ultimate Measure of an Application's Success

DETROIT, March 22, 2012 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Compuware Corporation (Nasdaq:CPWR), the technology performance company, today announced that it has published a new whitepaper titled: "How End-User Experience Affects Your Bottom Line." The paper explores the business impact of application performance and explains why end-user experience is the ultimate measure of an application's success that can affect an organization's bottom line.

Applications don't always perform optimally — especially now that they're increasingly delivered via the cloud and accessed from a variety of devices and platforms. Worse yet, the majority of problems go undetected until end users complain. The result is a major hit to productivity, customer loyalty and the bottom line.

This white paper outlines:

·         why applications often perform poorly and need to operate at peak performance;
·         how successful companies manage their applications; and
·         how organizations can ensure optimal application performance by using an application performance managementsolution that monitors the entire application delivery chain.

The Compuware Gomez® platform is the industry's leading solution for optimizing the performance of Web, non-Web, mobile, streaming and cloud applications. Driven by end-user experience, Gomez provides a unified view across the entire application delivery chain, from a user's browser or mobile device, across the Internet or a corporate WAN, in the cloud, to inside the data center, eliminating blind spots from the First Mile to the Last Mile.

Symantec to Acquire Nukona to Help Businesses Embrace "Bring Your Own Device" Movement

Symantec to Acquire Nukona to Help Businesses Embrace “Bring Your Own Device” Movement

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. – Mar. 20, 2012 – Symantec Corp. (Nasdaq: SYMC) today announced it has signed a definitive agreement to acquireNukona, Inc., a privately-held provider of mobile application management (MAM). The acquisition extends Symantec’s enterprise mobility portfolioto include a cross-platform mobile application protection solution to help IT organizations protect and isolate corporate data and applications across both corporate owned and personally owned devices. The transaction is expected to close in April and is subject to customary closing conditions. The financial terms of the acquisition are not being disclosed.

Read more detailed blog post:
The acquisition of Nukona complements Symantec’s acquisition earlier this month of Odyssey Software, a leading provider of mobile device management (MDM). Odyssey provides the MDM foundation to enroll and manage all necessary device settings across a broad range of platforms, while Nukona provides an innovative approach to help enterprises seamlessly distribute, secure and control applications and data without requiring them to manage the devices. By offering both MDM and MAM across multiple platforms, Symantec will enable CIOs to say “yes” to the onslaught of digital natives – people born in a world of connectivity – demanding to use devices and apps of their choice. Symantec will help customers secure enterprise critical mobile apps and data while managing and protecting them with policies, including authenticating users, encrypting sensitive files, preventing data leakage and selectively wiping corporate data. These acquisitions further advance Symantec’s enterprise mobility leadership by enhancing capabilities for mobile device, application and data protection.

“As the adoption of mobile devices and apps continues to grow at an unprecedented rate, one of the biggest challenges for customers is to protect and manage the native apps, data and environments of these devices,” said CJ Desai, senior vice president, Endpoint and Mobility Group, Symantec. “The acquisition of Nukona helps us further address the ‘Consumerization of IT’ and ‘Bring Your Own Device’ trends by helping organizations protect and isolate corporate data and applications across both corporate owned and personally owned devices.”

Click to Tweet: Symantec extends mobile application management capabilities and complements MDM with acquisition of Nukona:http://bit.ly/FQitbn

With Nukona’s ability to natively protect and control iOS, Android and HTML5 apps, Symantec will address the core problem of corporate and personal data separation without limiting the end-user experience or application adoption. By securely distributing and managing mobile applications and content, Symantec customers will be able to address corporate data security concerns around data leakage, encryption and authentication on a per-application basis, for both BYOD and corporate owned devices.

Unlike traditional proprietary sandbox solutions, Symantec’s approach will extend application protection that “wraps” both native and web-based apps with a management layer that allows IT to apply security policies without requiring any changes to the applications, leaving personal apps and activities untouched. In addition, the flexibility of cloud-based and on-prem enterprise app stores helps provide a seamless and scalable way to enable mobile application deployments. Nukona’s secure content library also allows for the protection and synchronization of documents without risk of data loss.

According to Symantec’s recent State of Mobility Survey, the average annual cost of mobile incidents for enterprises, including data loss, damage to the brand, productivity loss and loss of customer trust, was USD$429,000. However, despite the risks, an uptick in mobile applications across organizations is taking place with 71 percent of enterprises at least discussing deploying custom mobile applications and one-third currently implementing or having already implemented custom mobile applications. In addition, 59 percent of enterprises are making line-of-business applications accessible from mobile devices, representing a dramatic shift in the nature of mobility from an email extension to a core business enabler.
