VMware Showcases Advancements in End User Computing at VMworld® 2012

Company offers first look at the VMware Horizon™ Suite, an integrated platform for the Mobile Workforce

VMware demonstrates holistic solution to deliver legacy desktops as a centrally managed service harnessing VMware View® and Wanova Mirage™

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif., Aug. 28, 2012 — Today at VMworld® 2012, VMware, Inc. (NYSE: VMW), the global leader in virtualization and cloud infrastructure, previewed the alpha version of the VMware Horizon™ Suite, a new platform that will offer a flexible corporate workspace in the cloud for mobile workers to connect from anywhere using any device.  VMware also demonstrated how the combination of VMware View® and Wanova Mirage™ will enable customers to transform the legacy Windows desktop for the cloud era.
“Migration to Windows 7 and 8, bring your own device (BYOD), and the cloud are challenging IT organizations with new complexities and risks,” said Boaz Chalamish, senior vice president and general manager, End-User Computing, VMware.  “VMware’s continued investment and innovation in end-user computing will help IT organizations free the desktop, redefine the corporate workspace and embrace a new way of working in the post-PC era.”
Introducing the Horizon Suite: The Platform for the Mobile Workforce
As IT organizations struggle to manage devices, applications, data and users in the post-PC era, they need solutions that will help them evolve from managing devices to managing user experiences across multiple devices. Today, VMware demonstrated the alpha of the VMware Horizon Suite, showcasing how it will help customers deliver the multi-device workspace and give end-users secure access to applications and data from anywhere.
The VMware Horizon Suite will bring together technologies from Project Octopus, Project AppBlast, ThinApp, VMware Horizon Application Manager™ and VMware Horizon Mobile™ into a truly integrated management platform for the mobile workforce. The VMware Horizon Suite will provide a flexible platform that uniquely combines the principles of identity, context and policy to separate personal and business workspaces, enable consistent access to applications and data across any personal device.
Through a central Web management console, the VMware Horizon Suite will allow IT to customize a service catalog for all company data and applications.  Horizon Suite will understand a user’s attributes and environment (device, location and connectivity level) and enforce policies across applications, data and desktops. This will allow IT to deliver Windows, Android, iOS, Web and SaaS applications in a single workspace and give end-users self-service access to applications and data from anywhere. Horizon Suite alpha will also allow end-users to securely access and share their data and files from any device.
“The dramatic influx of mobile devices and applications is quickly subverting existing IT policy and management,” said Brett Waldman, Senior Research Analyst at IDC. “Modern solutions will need to have an integrated approach that holistically manages users, applications and devices to satisfy radically changing requirements to be well accepted by today’s IT organizations.”
VMware View and Wanova Mirage: Centralized Desktops for the Mobile Workforce
As workers become increasingly mobile, IT must provide anywhere, anytime access to the traditional Windows desktop.  With the recent acquisition of Wanova, VMware and its partner community can now offer centralized desktop management solutions that address the requirements of IT organizations to help them transform legacy Windows desktops into a service:
  • Managing virtual and physical desktops – Hosting desktops in the datacenter using VMware View comes with many benefits including simplified systems and application management, increased security and control, and higher availability and agility. The addition of Wanova Mirage extends the benefits of managing desktops in the cloud by also allowing local system execution on physical desktops and laptops. Mirage clones the images of the endpoints in the datacenter and runs them locally.  This gives customers all the benefits of centralized management and recovery while allowing users to work offline and preserve an uncompromised user experience. Together, these two solutions can support enterprises comprised of any combination of task or knowledge workers.
  • View “Rapid Desktop” program gains momentum – Today, Cisco, Dell, HP, and Intel join the growing eco-system of OEM, technology and channel partners that are helping to develop and sell VMware View appliances. These easy-to-deploy VDI appliances host between 25 and 500 virtual desktops that can be provisioned quickly, making them ideal for small and midsize businesses (SMBs) and scalable for larger organizations.
  • New VMware View solutions – VMware today introduced two new solutions designed to help IT administrators best architect their environment and ensure all components selected work together for quick managed desktop deployment. VMware View Business Process Desktop and Branch Office Desktop have been tested in labs to ensure product interoperability and performance and are supported with reference architectures, tools and services from VMware and VMware technology partners to minimize guesswork around VDI.
“Delivering desktops as a cloud service from the data center using VMware View® makes centralized endpoint management simple and easy,” said Prasad Calyam, research director of networking and virtualization, Ohio Supercomputer Center/OARnet, Ohio State University. “VMware's expanded desktop capability using central image management for local execution with the acquisition of Wanova Mirage™ will offer another way to support mobile workers in an organization."

Symantec to Acquire Nukona to Help Businesses Embrace "Bring Your Own Device" Movement

Symantec to Acquire Nukona to Help Businesses Embrace “Bring Your Own Device” Movement

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. – Mar. 20, 2012 – Symantec Corp. (Nasdaq: SYMC) today announced it has signed a definitive agreement to acquireNukona, Inc., a privately-held provider of mobile application management (MAM). The acquisition extends Symantec’s enterprise mobility portfolioto include a cross-platform mobile application protection solution to help IT organizations protect and isolate corporate data and applications across both corporate owned and personally owned devices. The transaction is expected to close in April and is subject to customary closing conditions. The financial terms of the acquisition are not being disclosed.

Read more detailed blog post:
The acquisition of Nukona complements Symantec’s acquisition earlier this month of Odyssey Software, a leading provider of mobile device management (MDM). Odyssey provides the MDM foundation to enroll and manage all necessary device settings across a broad range of platforms, while Nukona provides an innovative approach to help enterprises seamlessly distribute, secure and control applications and data without requiring them to manage the devices. By offering both MDM and MAM across multiple platforms, Symantec will enable CIOs to say “yes” to the onslaught of digital natives – people born in a world of connectivity – demanding to use devices and apps of their choice. Symantec will help customers secure enterprise critical mobile apps and data while managing and protecting them with policies, including authenticating users, encrypting sensitive files, preventing data leakage and selectively wiping corporate data. These acquisitions further advance Symantec’s enterprise mobility leadership by enhancing capabilities for mobile device, application and data protection.

“As the adoption of mobile devices and apps continues to grow at an unprecedented rate, one of the biggest challenges for customers is to protect and manage the native apps, data and environments of these devices,” said CJ Desai, senior vice president, Endpoint and Mobility Group, Symantec. “The acquisition of Nukona helps us further address the ‘Consumerization of IT’ and ‘Bring Your Own Device’ trends by helping organizations protect and isolate corporate data and applications across both corporate owned and personally owned devices.”

With Nukona’s ability to natively protect and control iOS, Android and HTML5 apps, Symantec will address the core problem of corporate and personal data separation without limiting the end-user experience or application adoption. By securely distributing and managing mobile applications and content, Symantec customers will be able to address corporate data security concerns around data leakage, encryption and authentication on a per-application basis, for both BYOD and corporate owned devices.

Unlike traditional proprietary sandbox solutions, Symantec’s approach will extend application protection that “wraps” both native and web-based apps with a management layer that allows IT to apply security policies without requiring any changes to the applications, leaving personal apps and activities untouched. In addition, the flexibility of cloud-based and on-prem enterprise app stores helps provide a seamless and scalable way to enable mobile application deployments. Nukona’s secure content library also allows for the protection and synchronization of documents without risk of data loss.

According to Symantec’s recent State of Mobility Survey, the average annual cost of mobile incidents for enterprises, including data loss, damage to the brand, productivity loss and loss of customer trust, was USD$429,000. However, despite the risks, an uptick in mobile applications across organizations is taking place with 71 percent of enterprises at least discussing deploying custom mobile applications and one-third currently implementing or having already implemented custom mobile applications. In addition, 59 percent of enterprises are making line-of-business applications accessible from mobile devices, representing a dramatic shift in the nature of mobility from an email extension to a core business enabler.

Moving Beyond Basic 'BYOD' Connectivity

PRESS RELEASE

Cisco Helps Companies Move Beyond Basic 'Bring Your Own Device' Connectivity to Create a Better Workplace Experience

Cisco goes beyond BYOD to allow people to work the way they want, when and where they want, and on the devices they want

SAN JOSE, Calif. – March 20, 2012 – Employees are demanding not only to use their own devices at work, but also to have more flexibility in the way they work and when and where they work. The Cisco® Connected World Technology Report found that more than 40 percent of college students and young employees said they would accept a lower-paying job that had more flexibility with regard to device choice and mobility than a higher-paying job with less flexibility.
To help companies meet these demands, Cisco is taking IT organizations beyond the basic step of connecting user-owned devices to the network by introducing a comprehensive approach that unifies policy, supports a better user experience and simplifies management to deliver an uncompromised user experience in any workspace. With this holistic approach, based on the Borderless Network architecture, Cisco can help IT organizations move beyond basic BYOD connectivity to deliver the following:
  1. A unified policy across wired, wireless local area network (LAN), cellular and VPN, achieved via enhancements to Cisco Identity Services Engine (ISE), which allow for easy self-provisioning of a user's device, and policy integrations with mobile device management (MDM) solutions.
  2. An uncompromised user experience over the entire wired/wireless network through updates to the wireless LAN infrastructure with Cisco Unified Wireless Network Software 7.2. The updates offer up to double the video scalability for multicast video, allow one controller to support up to 30,000 devices, and provide IPv6 support for client devices. These updates can help enhance the quality of collaboration applications such as Cisco Jabber and Cisco WebEx with real-time video over Cisco networks.
  3. Simplified operations and network management with the introduction of Prime Assurance Manager and Prime Infrastructure, which help IT professionals understand application performance from a user perspective, accelerate troubleshooting and lower operating costs.
Highlights:
  • Unified Policy: Cisco's approach to moving beyond basic BYOD connectivity provides a unified policy across the organization's entire network – wired, wireless LAN, cellular and VPN – helping set and enforce specific policies across the entire company based on users' roles, the devices they are using, the applications in use, and posture information. With this announcement, Cisco is enhancing ISE to include the following:
    • Zero-touch On-boarding: ISE 1.1MR guides users through an easy step-by-step process to quickly self-provision their own device at a time that's most convenient for them without burdening the IT team, allowing IT to focus on more complex, time-sensitive matters.
    • MDM Policy Integration: To better protect data and enforce compliance on mobile devices, Cisco is working with several MDM vendors including AirWatch, Good Technology, MobileIron and Zenprise to integrate their solutions with ISE. With this integration, IT can use Cisco ISE to define policies that help ensure mobile devices are enrolled in MDM, and gain visibility and control over endpoint access based on policies such as requiring a pin lock, disallowing "jailbroken" devices, or remotely wiping the data on lost or stolen devices.
    • Considering the Connected World Technology Report findings that 70 percent of employees worldwide admit that they break IT policies, with one in five citing the need to access unauthorized programs and applications to get their job done, a unified policy based on both the user needs and company needs will create a more secure work experience that supports employee and IT needs.
  • Uncompromised User Experience: Cisco helps IT optimize the experience for a diverse set of users with any type of device, and any type of desktop (native or virtual), across the wired/wireless network, allowing them to evolve their business beyond just the current BYOD needs. As part of this, Cisco is updating itswireless LAN infrastructure with the release of Cisco Unified Wireless Network Software 7.2, which includes:
    • Better Video: Up to double the video scalability compared to competitive solutions with CiscoVideoStream, which optimizes the network for multicast video so users can tune into company video events on the device and location of their choice. VideoStream also allows IT to prioritize video streams efficiently over the wired network. Video scalability is becoming increasingly important, especially when considering the Cisco Visual Networking Index (VNI) forecast that details how video will account for the majority of overall traffic, with business video conferencing alone increasing sixfold from 2010 to 2015.
    • More Devices: With this update, one controller can support up to 3,000 access points and 30,000 clients, allowing for a flexible, scalable wireless network that can support higher capacities while lowering operational costs.
    • IPv6 Support: Optimized IPv6 client support with full functionality, providing seamless roaming without drops, improved video and network communication and enhanced IPv6 security protection to close any security holes. Having full IPv6 client functionality is critical to a company's BYOD strategy as 71 percent of smartphones and tablets – 1.6 billion in total – will be IPv6-capable by 2016, according to Cisco VNI.
    • Cisco Unified Wireless Network Software 7.2 is also available on controllers embedded in the Integrated Services Routers G2 and Cisco Catalyst® 6500 Series Switches.
  • Simplified Operations and Network Management: Cisco offers simplified, centralized operations and network management to understand application performance from a user perspective, accelerate troubleshooting and lower operating costs. Today, Cisco is announcing innovations in the Cisco Prime™ portfolio, including:
    • Simple and Thorough Visibility: Prime Assurance Manager 1.1, a brand-new management platform, provides simple and thorough visibility into application performance across wired/wireless networks and end devices. This added visibility allows IT to understand and track the user's application performance, quickly spot the exact location of an application performance problem, and correct it on the first try, saving time and money while increasing user satisfaction.
    • Complete Lifecycle Management: Prime Infrastructure 1.1 delivers a bundled package for complete lifecycle management across the wired/wireless infrastructure, with new branch management portfolios to control individual branch components. This package provides IT with one place for planning, deployment and on-going management of Cisco infrastructure.
Product Availability:
  • Cisco Unified Wireless Network Software Release 7.2 is currently available globally.
  • Cisco ISE 1.1MR is scheduled to be available globally in the summer of calendar year 2012. The integration with MDM is scheduled to be available globally by the end of calendar year 2012.
  • Prime Assurance Manager 1.1 and Prime Infrastructure 1.1 are both currently available globally.
Supporting Quotes:
  • Rebecca Jacoby, senior vice president and CIO, Cisco
"BYOD is not just about connecting user-owned devices and allowing guest access. It's about what you do after that – that's when things get interesting. Cisco goes beyond that first step to provide companies with a complete solution to tackle the BYOD phenomenon today and tomorrow."
  • Sujai Hajela, vice president and general manager, Wireless Networking Business Unit, Cisco
"The BYOD trend is here to stay, but companies must move beyond the basic act of connecting user-owned devices to a comprehensive BYOD strategy to meet employee demands. Unlike competitors, Cisco is approaching BYOD holistically. With a comprehensive strategy designed around the network, unified policy and simplified management, Cisco delivers an uncompromised user experience in any workspace, setting companies up for success now and into the future."
  • Mitch Davis, CIO, Bowdoin College
"Before BYOD even became an industry trend, the majority of Bowdoin College students brought their own personal mobile devices. Over a two-year period, the number of devices and demand for wireless access quadrupled. Seeing this trend, we knew we had to develop a comprehensive BYOD strategy. We worked with Cisco to enable anytime, anywhere wireless access on any device so students and faculty can learn and collaborate with ease without even thinking about wireless connectivity or if their device will work on the network. And best of all, we can scale the solution based on our needs, set specific policies based on the user, and manage the solution efficiently."
  • Paul DeBeasi, Research VP, Gartner
"Mobile communications traffic will continue to grow exponentially. This growth in traffic will strain wireless networks (WLAN and mobile cellular). It will require that enterprises and mobile communication service providers invest capital to improve network capacity, reliability, and manageability. In addition, enterprises have begun to embrace the policy of bring your own device (BYOD) as a way to satisfy user demands, potentially save money, and stop managing end-user hardware. Enterprises should consider a comprehensive approach to BYOD that balances security, user experience, and supportability."

News Release from Cisco - Workforce Survey

Cisco Workforce Survey in Northern Europe Confirms Need For Open, Flexible Workplace Environment That Accommodates Social Media, Device Freedom And Remote Access

Amsterdam, the Netherlands  – March 13, 2012 – A majority (60%) of IT decision makers from North European countries believe the ability to work remotely leads to increased productivity, and it is no longer necessary to be confined to an office to be productive, according to a study held in the North European region and published today by Cisco. Although these IT decision makers believe technology allows them to be more mobile and flexible, more than half (56%) of those surveyed, led by those in Norway and The Netherlands, work one or more extra hours per day as a result of the ability to work remotely.
In Northern Europe, there is a growing need for remote access to the company network, social media access in the workplace and for the freedom to use personal devices for business purposes, also known as 'Bring Your Own Device' (BYOD). This trend has a tremendous impact on the IT policies of organizations and among end users who are employed by companies with IT policies, as the study also found that nearly half (47%) indicate their IT policy could use improvement or updating. These are the main conclusions of an online survey held by Cisco in five countries: Belgium, Denmark, Norway, Sweden and The Netherlands. The results of this North European survey complement and confirm the findings of last year's Cisco Connected World Technology Report, an international research into the demands, behaviour and work lifestyles of the next generation of workers.
In addition, the survey found that when faced with the choice between ‘a higher salary and no remote access' versus a 'lower salary position that offers remote access', end users are split, with one out of every two respondents (53%) opting for a lower salary, because they find work flexibility more important. With little differentiation across the countries, more than 6 out of 10 (65%) end users expect to have remote access to the network in the future.
Looking at the use of mobile devices, end users from Northern European countries tend to use more than one device during the typical workday: more than 8 in 10 (82%) end users indicate they use at least one device at work that is not company-issued. More than half (51%) of the surveyed IT decision makers even indicate that up to 50% of their company's mobile workers use a smartphone as their primary communication device.
Overall, most businesses in the surveyed countries have at least taken some steps to prepare for a ‘mobile and distributed' workforce. Still 1 in 5 IT decision makers (21%) indicate that their company is as yet completely unprepared. The highest percentage of unprepared businesses is reported in Norway (26%). In The Netherlands, 14% of decision makers indicate that their company is totally unprepared. In each country, roughly one-third (36%) indicate they are actively working towards enabling a mobile, distributed workforce, especially in the Netherlands (45%). Surprisingly, although Norway reports the largest percentage of completely unprepared companies, it also has the highest proportion of companies that already have state-of-the-art IT support for a ‘mobile and distributed' workforce (34%), together with Denmark (31%). In that respect, Netherlands (14%) and Belgium (12%) trail the pack.
Few end users (less than 1 in 5, 19%) report that access to social media type websites and applications is restricted at the workplace. Likewise, about 6 in 10 IT decision makers (59%), particularly those in Denmark, feel that access to social media sites and applications are important for the work-life balance, or staying competitive with other businesses that use them.
Supporting Quote
Niels Furu, Vice President, Cisco Northern Europe: "Our Workforce Survey in Northern Europe confirms that employees really want an open and flexible workplace environment. The survey indicates that IT decision makers want to accommodate this requirement and in a secure way enable a mobile, distributed workforce. Most end users in the surveyed countries indicate that they work an extra hour or more per day because of their ability to work remotely.  This shows BYOD brings the productivity we are looking for."
Key Findings
Remote Access and Mobility
  • While the vast majority (68%) of IT decision makers indicate that it is critical for employees to be able to connect to the corporate network anywhere and anytime, end users tend to be divided. About one in four believes it is critical to be connected all the time, while 4 in 10 indicate that this is not imperative.
  • Similar to the worldwide study conducted by Cisco in 2011 across 14 countries, not being able to access information due to physical location continues to be the greatest limitation to remote access, according to end users who have this capability. Roughly 4 in 10 (40%) indicate that location poses no restriction to remote access.
  • Only a small proportion of end users who do not currently have remote access believe their company is open to this idea. The largest proportion indicate their job role is the primary obstacle keeping them from working remotely. Overall, the majority feel that this is not a big issue for them and the ability to work remotely is still a privilege in today's world - not a right.
  • About 3 in 4 end users rely on cellular or WLAN connections for job performance outside the workplace and for nearly half, these are the primary types of network connections.
  • IT decision makers indicate that satisfying user demand for mobile device connectivity is the primary driver for wireless LAN adoption. In Denmark, more than half indicate that guest access is a primary driver.
Device Freedom
  • Most end users (84%) report using two or more devices during a typical workday.
  • More than half (51%) of IT decision makers indicate that up to 50% of their company's mobile workers use a smartphone as their primary communication device. Relative to Norway, a significantly larger proportion of end users in Belgium use their mobile phone for work. Nearly 4 in 10 (38%) end users are allowed to use their personal PC or Mac for work.
  • Approximately half of the surveyed end users are restricted from using personal devices for work purposes and for access to the corporate network.
  • More than one-third (37%) of end users expect access from a personal mobile device.
Social Media
  • Overall, fewer than 1 in 5 (19%) end users from the total sample indicate that their company currently restricts access to online games, social networking and Twitter. Restricted access to sites tends to be more prevalent in Belgium than in other countries.
  • Access restrictions tend to be stricter worldwide relative to Northern European countries, as roughly 4 in 10 end users worldwide indicated being restricted from accessing online gaming and social networking.
Security and IT policy
  • More than one-third (36%) of IT decision makers indicate they are actively working towards enabling a mobile, distributed workforce.  More than half (57%) indicate that security is their biggest challenge.
  • Data lost outside of the organization continues to be a great concern for IT decision makers. However, just under half (40%) of them believe that just as much data is leaked or lost when employees are outside the company as when they are in in the office.
  • While most IT decision makers (66%) believe employees are concerned about security threats when remotely accessing corporate information outside the office, just 44% of end users are worried about this.
  • Risk behaviour such as sharing work computers and sensitive information externally tends to be significantly more prevalent in Sweden and Belgium than in other Northern European countries.
  • About 8 in 10 IT decision makers (78%), driven by a significantly large proportion in Norway and Denmark, indicate their company has an IT policy outlining acceptable uses of company resources such as personal computers, cellular telephones and smartphones.
  • However, fewer than half of end users (45%) are aware their company has an IT policy. This awareness is lowest among end users in Belgium and the Netherlands. Significantly larger proportions of end users in Sweden and Denmark are aware that their company has an IT policy of acceptable uses.
  • Among those who are aware of the IT policy, nearly half of employees do not adhere to it "all the time" and feel that it could be improved.
Video
  • There is a clear difference in perception between IT decision makers and end users on the importance of video for business communication in the coming years. While 60% of IT decision makers feel its importance of video will increase, only 14% of end users expect to be using video in the next two years.
  • About 4 in 10 end users, driven by a considerably large proportion in Sweden, can currently use video at their workplace. More than half of those who actually use video, indicate this is mainly for training and education purposes – including a significantly large proportion in Norway (75%).
  • About one quarter (28%) of end users, driven by a significant proportion in Belgium, expect video to become one of the most important modes of communication at work.
Datacenter
  • Top priorities for IT decision makers over the next 3 years are to better manage resource capacity and to improve agility and speed in the deployment of business applications.
  • Leading technologies and trends that are most important to achieve data center goals over that same period include cloud computing and mobile access to information for employees.
  • The majority of IT decision makers from the total sample indicate that their primary strategy for achieving those top priorities is cloud computing, particularly in the Netherlands. In Denmark, that primary strategy is unified data center fabric, in order to unify SAN and LAN data traffic.
  • Although fewer than 1 in 4 IT decision makers already use cloud-based computing, more than half are currently planning to adopt this or are considering its business value.
  • About 6 in 10 (59%)  IT decision makers see the role of the network in their company's data center increasing over the next 3 years.
  • 4 in 10 IT decision makers anticipate that 50% or more of their company's production servers will be virtualized over the next 3 years.
Survey data
  • The online survey completed in February 2012, by 523 end users and 503 IT decision makers (ITDMs).
  • The survey was held 5 countries to gain approximately 100 completes for each subgroup in each country (~200 total completes per country).
  • Respondents were screened to meet the following criteria:
–      Adults (22+)
–      Employed (full or part time)
–      Not employed by a company in market research or nonprofit industry
–      Employed by an organization that employs 10+ people worldwide
–      End users: 50% Male / 50% Female; not employed by a company in the IT consulting industry
–      IT Decision Makers: CIO, CSO, CISO, VP of IT, Director of IT, Network Manager/IT Manager, IT Administration, IT Consultant, with at least some influence on the purchasing decisions for their company's security hardware and software.

New Software for Influx of Mobile Devices to Workplace

News release from IBM:

IBM Announces New Software to Secure the Influx of Mobile Devices to the Workplace

New York-based School System Looks to Mobile Management; New Software Secures Smartphones and Tablets for Apple iOS, Android, Symbian and Windows

ARMONK, N.Y. - 31 Jan 2012: IBM (NYSE: IBM) today introduced new software to help organizations better manage and secure the explosion of smartphones and tablets in the workplace, while also managing laptops, desktops and servers.

In addition to the new mobile security and management software introduced today, IBM also announced the acquisition of Worklight. Worklight accelerates IBM’s comprehensive mobile portfolio, which is designed to help global organizations leverage the proliferation of all mobile devices -- from laptops to smartphones and tablets.

As the mobile workforce is expected to reach more than 1.19 billion by next year, there are new pressures to connect personal smartphones and tablets to corporate networks and provide employee access to business data on them. At the end of 2011, almost half of mobile devices used in the workplace were employee owned according to IDCThis “Bring Your Own Device” (BYOD) trend raises additional concerns about managing security risks. Mobile exploits doubled in 2011 from 2010, according to the IBM X-Force Mid-Year Trend and Risk Report.

IBM Endpoint Manager for Mobile Devices helps organizations support and protect the growing mobile workforce. Through this software, firms can use a single solution to secure and manage smartphones and tablets, as well as laptops, desktop PCs, and servers. It manages Apple iOS, Google Android, Nokia Symbian, and Microsoft Windows Mobile and Windows Phone devices.

The software extends security intelligence to deal with the growing threats from mainstream adoption of the BYOD trend. Organizations can install the IBM software in hours, remotely set policies, identify potential data compromises and wipe data off the devices if they are lost or stolen. The software helps configure and enforce passcode policies, encryption and virtual private network settings.

“As the BYOD movement accelerates, it presents new opportunities and challenges for organizations. In order for them to take advantage of this trend, it is important that organizations have mobile security and management policies in place,” said Bob Sutor, vice president, IBM Mobile Platform. “The new offering from IBM will help organizations manage personal and enterprise-owned mobile phones and tablets across IT networks in order to minimize risk, increase productivity and enhance innovation.”

New York-based School System Automates its Computing Endpoints and Looks to Mobile Management
The Western New York Regional Information Center (WNYRIC) housed within Erie 1 BOCES, a regional public education services organization in Buffalo, N.Y., manages hundreds of thousands of computing endpoints for more than 100 school districts. IBM Tivoli Endpoint Management software automatically updates security protection and power management of its computers and servers across the school district. Before using the software, one of the ways to perform these functions was for someone to drive to each location and manually update each machine. IBM software will help the WNYRIC reduce energy usage through automating power settings of these thousands of endpoints, resulting in an estimated savings of $3.2 million in a year.

Now more of the district's administrators, teachers and students are looking to tap their district-issued and personal iPads, iPhones and Android devices to create lesson plans, communicate and share documents on their network. The WNYRIC is planning a comprehensive way to manage mobile security issues and compliance and has gotten early access to IBM Endpoint Manager for Mobile Devices.

“Our school districts are looking for a way to manage and secure hundreds and potentially thousands of smartphones, laptops and other computers,” said Jill Holbrook, associate director of the WNYRIC. “Automating the computer updates and security protection across our entire network—including mobile—would speed our ability to provide more secure and efficient services to the administrators, teachers and students we support.”

Managing and Securing Mobile Devices throughout the Workplace

This new release of IBM Endpoint Manager extends IBM capabilities in managing the security and compliance of servers, computers and point-of-sales devices, such as ATMs and self-service kiosks to smartphones and tablets using mobile operating systems while addressing the unique aspects of those devices. IBM Endpoint Manager for Mobile Devices enables customers to:

·        Safeguard Data -- Selectively wipe enterprise data when devices are lost or stolen and configure and enforce passcode policies, encryption, VPN, and more.
·        Provide Flexible Management -- Secure and manage employee- and corporate-owned mobile devices using a combination of email-based and agent-based management, while preserving the native device experience.
·        Maintain Compliance -- Automatically identify non-compliant devices and take action by denying email access or by issuing user notifications until corrective actions are implemented.
·        Unify the Infrastructure -- Leverage a single infrastructure to manage and secure all devices: smartphones, media tablets, desktops, laptops, and servers.
The IBM Endpoint Manager for Mobile Devices is built on IBM’s 2010 acquisition of BigFix software.
