Premiere Global Sports Deploys Symantec Solutions to Secure and Back Up Virtual Systems

Premiere Global Sports Deploys Symantec Solutions to Secure and Back Up Virtual Systems

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. – March 27, 2012 – Symantec Corp. (Nasdaq: SYMC) today announced that Premiere Global Sports, a provider of specialized sports travel and hospitality products is using Symantec Protection Suite Enterprise Edition and Symantec Backup Exec to centralize protection of the company’s distributed endpoints. While Premiere Global Sports is a small business, the data they produce is growing on an enterprise scale and thus needs the protection of an enterprise-class solution. Since the deployment, Premiere Global Sports can protect, back up, and provide disaster recovery capabilities for its virtualized business systems.

Premiere Global Sports has grown by acquisition over the last decade, and as a result, most of its 75 full-time employees are distributed across the United States. Consequently, all of its endpoints were managed individually with a variety of antivirus products.

“Many of the companies we acquired were flying by the seat of their pants and didn’t have time to focus on IT infrastructure,” said Jason Drake, Premiere Global Sports’ director of infrastructure and security. “We were tasked with choosing expandable platforms that can meet more needs than we have right now.”

Centralizing Endpoint Protection
Based on past positive experiences, Drake selected Symantec Protection Suite Enterprise Edition to centralize protection of its distributed endpoints and to protect multiple independent servers and dozens of Windows endpoints. In addition to endpoint security, the Symantec Protection Suite Enterprise Edition license includes email server security, email and web gateway virtual appliances, and desktop system recovery. The Enterprise Edition will accommodate Premiere Global Sports’ future growth.

“Having Symantec Protection Suite in place—especially with its defense against zero-day threats—definitely makes me feel more at ease,” Drake said. “By leveraging the new security management solution, we can pinpoint security threats and increase the productivity of our security operations.”

Reliable Backup and Recovery for a Virtualized IT Environment
To support Premiere Global Sports’ growing business, Drake and his team chose Symantec Backup Exec to reduce downtime and ensure critical information on both their virtual and physical systems is always protected and restored in seconds.

“Our IT environment is 90 – 95 percent virtualized, and we continue to leverage this technology to reduce costs and the number of physical servers,” said Drake. “We have trusted Backup Exec to backup our data for several years and the transition from a physical server infrastructure to virtual infrastructure didn’t change our choice in a data protection solution.”

Backup Exec simplifies both backup and disaster recovery, allowing Drake to focus on strategic programs. Plus, Premiere Global Sports will soon begin beta testing Backup Exec 2012 as its deduplication features will streamline backup operations even further.

“Based on my testing, Backup Exec gives me the ability to recover both physical and virtual systems in case of a catastrophe,” Drake said. “Symantec’s V-Ray technology embedded in Backup Exec also allows us to easily expand to a virtual environment and feel confident in our decision.”

Nikon Corporation Takes Control of eDiscovery Process with Symantec’s Clearwell eDiscovery Platform

Nikon Corporation Takes Control of eDiscovery Process with Symantec’s Clearwell eDiscovery Platform

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. – Mar. 26, 2012 – Symantec Corp. (Nasdaq: SYMC) today announced that Nikon Corp (TYO: 7731), the leading Japanese manufacturer of optical instruments, has chosen Symantec’s Clearwell eDiscovery Platform for in-house eDiscovery. Nikon is leveraging Symantec’s flexible, cross-border solution to perform early case assessments and first-pass review in order to mitigate risk and reduce the overall costs of eDiscovery. With Symantec’s Clearwell eDiscovery Platform, Nikon is able to rapidly and accurately filter, process, search and analyze data in multiple formats and languages.

“Using Symantec’s Clearwell product in-house allows us to dramatically decrease costs associated with early case assessments,” said Takuya Shirahata, executive staff, 1st section, 2nd intellectual property department, Nikon Corporation. “Processing and analyzing the increasing volume of data for our case is a huge undertaking, but with the help of Symantec’s Clearwell eDiscovery Platform we are able to process the data in a matter of days. The product’s easy to use interface, double-byte support and transparent search capabilities provide our legal team with quick and continuous visibility into case facts, which allows us to meet appointed deadlines and stay within budget.”

Japanese customers continue to select Symantec’s Clearwell eDiscovery Platform for the product’s battle-tested technology and features that provide critical capabilities such as robust support for double-byte and Japanese encodings. In addition, the product provides the flexibility necessary for cross-border eDiscovery cases typically faced by Japanese customers, where litigation often demands multi-jurisdictional support and requires data to be processed in Japan and other countries such as the United States. For instance, Symantec’s Clearwell eDiscovery Platform can be deployed on a hosted basis or onsite, which allows eDiscovery to be conducted in Japan without having to send data to the U.S. for processing. This enables customers like Nikon to maintain control over potentially sensitive data and avail themselves of business hour support in-country.

“The global impact of litigation is leading corporations around the world to closely evaluate their eDiscovery strategies and take greater control of escalating costs,” said Trevor Eddy, senior director, Information Intelligence Group, Symantec Corp. “Through extensive research and development, Symantec’s Clearwell eDiscovery Platform has been built to meet the unique eDiscovery needs of our Japanese customers. By bringing eDiscovery in-house, Nikon is able to leverage Symantec’s innovative technology to better manage the eDiscovery process and simultaneously reduce costs.”

Negligent Employees Top Cause of Data Breaches

Symantec-Sponsored Ponemon Report Finds Negligent Employees Top Cause of Data Breaches in the U.S. While Malicious Attacks Most Costly

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. –Mar. 20, 2012 – Symantec Corp. (Nasdaq: SYMC) and the Ponemon Institute today released the findings of the 2011 Cost of Data Breach Study: United States, which reveals negligent insiders are the top cause of data breaches while malicious attacks are 25 percent more costly than other types. The study also found organizations which employ a chief information security officer (CISO) with enterprise-wide responsibility for data protection can reduce the cost of a data breach by 35 percent per compromised record. The organizational cost of a data breach was $5.5 million last year. The seventh annual Ponemon Cost of a Data Breach report is based on the actual data breach experiences of 49 U.S. companies from 14 different industry sectors.

Click to Tweet: Ponemon Institute report finds insiders pose greatest data breach threat: http://bit.ly/xoX1jv

“This year’s report shows that insiders continue to pose a serious threat to the security of their organizations,” said Francis deSouza, group president, Enterprise Products and Services, Symantec Corp. “This is particularly true as the increasing adoption of tablets, smart phones and cloud applications in the workplace means that employees are able to access corporate information anywhere, at any time. It is essential for companies to put the proper information protection policies and procedures in place to counterbalance these new realities.”

Additional key findings from the report include:
  • Negligent insiders and malicious attacks are the main causes of data breach. Thirty-nine percent of organizations say negligence was the root cause of the data breaches. For the first time, malicious or criminal attacks account for more than a third of the total breaches reported in this study. Since 2007, they also have been the most costly breaches. Accordingly, organizations need to focus on processes, policies and technologies that address threats from the malicious insider or hacker.
  • Certain organizational factors reduce the overall cost. If the organization has a CISO with overall responsibility for enterprise data protection the average cost of a data breach can be reduced as much as $80 per compromised record. Outside consultants assisting with the breach response also can save as much as $41 per record. When considering the average number of records lost or stolen, all of these factors can provide significant and positive financial benefits.
  • Specific attributes or factors of the data breach also can increase the overall cost. For example, in this year’s study organizations that had their first ever data breach spent on average $37 more per record. Those that responded and notified customers too quickly without a thorough assessment of the data breach also paid an average of $33 more per record. Data breaches caused by third parties or a lost or stolen device increased the cost by $26 and $22, respectively.
  • Detection and escalation costs declined but notification costs increased. Detection and escalation costs declined from approximately $460,000 in 2010 to $433,000 in 2011. These costs refer to activities that enable a company to detect the breach and whether it occurred in storage or in motion.
  • More customers remain loyal following the data breach. For the first time, fewer customers are abandoning companies that have a data breach. However, certain industries are more susceptible to customer churn, which causes their data breach costs to be higher than the average. Taking steps to keep customers loyal and repair any damage to reputation and brand can help reduce the cost of a data breach.
  • The cost of data breach declined. For the first time in seven years, both the organizational cost of data breach and the cost per lost or stolen record have declined. The organizational cost has declined from $7.2 million to $5.5 million and the cost per record has declined from $214 to $194.
“One of the most interesting findings of the 2011 report was the correlation between an organization having a CISO on its executive team and reduced costs of a data breach,” said Dr. Larry Ponemon, chairman and founder of the Ponemon Institute. “As organizations of all sizes battle an uptick in both internal and external threats, it makes sense that having the proper security leadership in place can help address these challenges.”

The U.S. Cost of a Data Breach Study was derived from a detailed analysis of 49 data breach cases with a range of nearly 4,500 to 98,000 affected records. It takes into account a wide range of direct business costs, including engaging forensic experts, outsourcing hotline support and providing free credit monitoring subscriptions and discounts for future products and services. Indirect costs include in-house investigations and communication, as well as the extrapolated value of customer loss resulting from turnover or diminished acquisition rates. The average cost of a data breach does not apply to catastrophic breaches (study excludes data breaches of more than 100,000 records) given they are not typical of those experienced in the United States. Companies analyzed were from 14 different industries, including finance, retail, healthcare, services, education, technology, manufacturing, research, transportation, consumer, hotels and leisure, media, pharmaceutical and communications.

Symantec recommends the following information protection best practices:
  • Assess risks by identifying and classifying confidential information
  • Educate employees on information protection policies and procedures, then hold them accountable
  • Implement an integrated security solution that includes reputation-based security, proactive threat protection, firewall and intrusion prevention in order to keep malware off endpoints
  • Deploy data loss prevention technologies which enable policy compliance and enforcement
  • Proactively encrypt laptops to minimize consequences of a lost device
  • Implement two factor authentication
  • Integrate information protection practices into businesses processes
Companies can analyze their own risk by visiting Symantec’s Data Breach Risk Calculator. Based on seven years of trend data, the calculator takes into account an organization’s size, industry, location and security practices to estimate how much a data breach would cost on both a per record and organizational basis. It is available athttp://www.databreachcalculator.com.

Symantec to Acquire Nukona to Help Businesses Embrace "Bring Your Own Device" Movement

Symantec to Acquire Nukona to Help Businesses Embrace “Bring Your Own Device” Movement

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. – Mar. 20, 2012 – Symantec Corp. (Nasdaq: SYMC) today announced it has signed a definitive agreement to acquireNukona, Inc., a privately-held provider of mobile application management (MAM). The acquisition extends Symantec’s enterprise mobility portfolioto include a cross-platform mobile application protection solution to help IT organizations protect and isolate corporate data and applications across both corporate owned and personally owned devices. The transaction is expected to close in April and is subject to customary closing conditions. The financial terms of the acquisition are not being disclosed.

Read more detailed blog post:
The acquisition of Nukona complements Symantec’s acquisition earlier this month of Odyssey Software, a leading provider of mobile device management (MDM). Odyssey provides the MDM foundation to enroll and manage all necessary device settings across a broad range of platforms, while Nukona provides an innovative approach to help enterprises seamlessly distribute, secure and control applications and data without requiring them to manage the devices. By offering both MDM and MAM across multiple platforms, Symantec will enable CIOs to say “yes” to the onslaught of digital natives – people born in a world of connectivity – demanding to use devices and apps of their choice. Symantec will help customers secure enterprise critical mobile apps and data while managing and protecting them with policies, including authenticating users, encrypting sensitive files, preventing data leakage and selectively wiping corporate data. These acquisitions further advance Symantec’s enterprise mobility leadership by enhancing capabilities for mobile device, application and data protection.

“As the adoption of mobile devices and apps continues to grow at an unprecedented rate, one of the biggest challenges for customers is to protect and manage the native apps, data and environments of these devices,” said CJ Desai, senior vice president, Endpoint and Mobility Group, Symantec. “The acquisition of Nukona helps us further address the ‘Consumerization of IT’ and ‘Bring Your Own Device’ trends by helping organizations protect and isolate corporate data and applications across both corporate owned and personally owned devices.”

Click to Tweet: Symantec extends mobile application management capabilities and complements MDM with acquisition of Nukona:http://bit.ly/FQitbn

With Nukona’s ability to natively protect and control iOS, Android and HTML5 apps, Symantec will address the core problem of corporate and personal data separation without limiting the end-user experience or application adoption. By securely distributing and managing mobile applications and content, Symantec customers will be able to address corporate data security concerns around data leakage, encryption and authentication on a per-application basis, for both BYOD and corporate owned devices.

Unlike traditional proprietary sandbox solutions, Symantec’s approach will extend application protection that “wraps” both native and web-based apps with a management layer that allows IT to apply security policies without requiring any changes to the applications, leaving personal apps and activities untouched. In addition, the flexibility of cloud-based and on-prem enterprise app stores helps provide a seamless and scalable way to enable mobile application deployments. Nukona’s secure content library also allows for the protection and synchronization of documents without risk of data loss.

According to Symantec’s recent State of Mobility Survey, the average annual cost of mobile incidents for enterprises, including data loss, damage to the brand, productivity loss and loss of customer trust, was USD$429,000. However, despite the risks, an uptick in mobile applications across organizations is taking place with 71 percent of enterprises at least discussing deploying custom mobile applications and one-third currently implementing or having already implemented custom mobile applications. In addition, 59 percent of enterprises are making line-of-business applications accessible from mobile devices, representing a dramatic shift in the nature of mobility from an email extension to a core business enabler.

Experian and Symantec's two-factor credentialing solution selected by Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services

Experian and Symantec continue to gain traction in the public sector

Costa Mesa, Calif. and Mountain View, Calif., March 14, 2012 – Experian and Symantec Corp. (NASDAQ: SYMC) today announced the two-factor credentialing solution jointly developed by the companies was selected by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) to provide Enterprise Remote Identity Proofing (ERIP) and Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) Credential Services in support of the Affordable Health Care Act (ACA). The Experian and Symantec offering will play a critical role in a $78 million contract that was awarded to Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC) providing CMS with an offering that helps them solve key challenges that arise in serving the nation’s large uninsured population.

The Experian and Symantec solution combines Experian's identity proofing capabilities with the strong authentication capabilities of Symantec's Validation and ID Protection (VIP) Service to deliver secure online identity credentials. It will minimize the risk of fraud by providing more than 35 million U.S. citizens secure online access to the State and Federal Health Insurance Exchange, while complying with electronic authentication guidelines in the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Special Publication SP 800-63-1 and achieving Level 3 Assurance.

“Experian is thrilled that our solution was selected by CMS and believes it will add great value in helping to provide millions of citizens with access to insurance and medical information, while simultaneously safeguarding individual user’s identities, and complying with federal mandates and regulations.” said Scott Waldron, president of Experian, Government Services. “Our innovative solution with Symantec continues to gain traction with government agencies and healthcare organizations, and this success is another milestone on our path to becoming the de facto standard in the public sector for identity proofing and authentication.”

The offering will utilize Experian’s Precise ID platform, risk-based identity proofing encompassing highly predictive risk assessments through a combination of identity element verification, authentication, risk scoring and progressive out-of-wallet questioning to refine decisions about which identities should be allowed to enter into the CMS system and which identities should be denied access or further verified via alternate processes.

Symantec’s VIP service, the leading cloud-based authentication service, will enable CMS to provide secure online access and transactions to help obtain compliance and reduce fraud risk. A fully hosted strong authentication Security as a Service (SaaS) solution, VIP offers a cost-effective way to give legitimate users access to business resources, enterprise applications and websites while protecting against cybercriminals. VIP provides an additional layer of protection beyond standard username and password by requiring a dynamic one-time use, six digit security code generated by a user’s VIP credential.

“Symantec is very excited about the opportunity to work with the SAIC team to provide our CMS customer with an advanced Symantec-Experian multi-factor authentication and identity proofing joint solution,” said Gigi Schumm, vice president and general manager of Symantec's Public Sector organization. “This capability will enable CMS to successfully roll out the Administration’s National Uninsured program under the Affordable Health Care Act, decrease risk associated with healthcare fraud, and support the realization of NIST’s ‘National Strategy for Trusted Identities in Cyberspace’.”
