Toronto District School Board Calls on EMC's VNX, Data Domain to Advance Education Initiatives

EMC Press Release
Toronto District School Board Calls on EMC's VNX, Data Domain to Advance Education Initiatives
Canada's Largest School District Lowers Capacity Requirements by 32% and Boosts Performance for Microsoft Applications by 21%
HOPKINTON, Mass. - August 14, 2012
EMC Corporation (NYSE:EMC) today announced that The Toronto District School Board (TDSB), the largest school board in Canada and fourth largest district in North America, has transformed its 325-terabyte storage infrastructure with EMC® VNX® unified storage and EMC Data Domain® deduplication storage systems for backup and recovery with the help of EMC Residency Services. Through storage consolidation, Microsoft Hyper-V virtualization and a FLASH 1st strategy, TDSB, running the Microsoft Productivity Suite, is achieving dramatic improvements in performance and efficiency while enhancing student learning and teacher collaboration. Leveraging a, FLASH 1st strategy to combines a small amount of Flash capacity with the FAST Suite, has transformed the way TDSB configures its IT environment. As TDSB grows, it expects a 38% reduction in Flash tier costs with new storage efficiency enhancements.

Customer Benefits:

  • Reduced Footprint & Energy Costs—As a result of server consolidation with Hyper-V and a transition from an all SAS configuration to a FLASH 1st  strategy, TDSB saw a reduction in capacity requirements by 32% and a decrease in energy expenses by 22%
  • Better Performance for Microsoft Applications—TDSB's FLASH 1st strategy has resulted in an overall storage performance increase of 21%, powering faster Microsoft SQL transactions and improved collaboration among staff and students.
  • Increased Backup Efficiency—Using EMC Data Domain deduplication storage systems, TDSB's data backup storage requirements have been decreased by over 90%.

Customer Challenges and Solution:

TDSB is comprised of 600+ schools, 250,000 students and 40,000 staff members. With tight budgets and rapid data growth, TDSB needed to lower its cost per terabyte and increase storage density without requiring additional data center space in order to continue to provide a high level of IT services to faculty, staff and students. TDSB faced challenges with its backup windows, which were running into school hours and impacting performance.
Residents from EMC Global Services provided skills support and knowledge transfer, enabling TDSB to transform its IT infrastructure with EMC VNX. Previous disparate Block-level and network-attached storage (NAS) were consolidated onto a single, unified VNX solution, running its mission-critical applications, including Microsoft Exchange, SQL Server, Oracle, SharePoint, Office, OCS, and Dot Net Nuke (CMS) as well as SAP. EMC Residency Services helped speed time to value of TDSB's new technology implementation and improved the management and support of its information infrastructure.
By employing a FLASH 1st strategy on their VNX, TDSB has seen an increase in performance and a substantial improvement in storage efficiency. Previously, the IT team had to purchase an abundance of Fibre Channel drives, with some being underutilized while others were over-subscribed. With Fully Automated Storage Tiering for Virtual Pools (FAST VP) and FAST Cache along with a mix of Flash and high-capacity, cost effective disk drives, the data is automatically placed on the most appropriate drive type, saving valuable resource time and smoothing out unexpected bursts in activity. TDSB credits the FLASH 1st strategy and Hyper-V virtualization for the enhanced management simplicity and overall reduction in both CapEx and OpEx.
In addition, TDSB replaced its tape backup environment with EMC Data Domain deduplication storage systems, resulting in reduced backup times and a decrease in backup storage requirements by over 90%.

Customer Quotes:

Peter Singh, Senior Manager, IT Operations, Toronto District School Board
"EMC's VNX unified storage has the best performance and efficiency at a very cost-effective price. It integrates with Microsoft Hyper-V, which is crucial to our cloud strategy, and with its higher performance, automated storage tiering, and thin provisioning, VNX was a no-brainer."
"Implementing a 'FLASH 1st' strategy on VNX helped us attain a greener data center, reducing our storage space by 32% and decreasing our power cost by 22%. We actually received a rebate from our electric company because of the savings.”
"EMC's Residency offering was one of the best services we've used from any vendor. To have an EMC expert on site, working as an extension of our staff, was priceless. It allowed us to move forward with the project much more quickly than doing everything ourselves."
Zain Bhamjee, System Architect, Toronto District School Board
"With a storage infrastructure that's reached 325 terabytes and growing, we're always looking for ways to leverage our IT dollars to bring the most value to our teachers and students. EMC's comprehensive array of storage, software, and services are enabling us to transform and achieve the most efficiency, performance, and scalability we've seen yet. Additionally, the new features for the VNX family, including lower starting costs for Flash configurations, are exciting additions to these existing advantages--we're looking forward to reaping the cost and efficiency benefits of these new capabilities."
"Tasks that once took five clicks now get done in one with Unisphere. We're supporting our 325-terabyte storage environment with less than one and a half FTEs. Most shops would need three to five FTEs to manage an infrastructure our size."

U.S. Chamber Calls for Tax Reform as U.S. Corporate Rate Becomes Highest in the World

U.S. Chamber Calls for Tax Reform as U.S. Corporate Rate Becomes Highest in the World

Says United States Should Adopt Simpler System with Lower Corporate and Individual Rates and Territorial System
WASHINGTON, D.C.—U.S. Chamber of Commerce Executive Vice President for Government Affairs Bruce Josten issued the following statement today ahead of the U.S. corporate tax rate becoming the world’s highest on April 1, 2012:
“In just a few days, the United States will hold the dubious distinction of having the highest corporate tax rate in the world. By simply standing still, we are falling behind. We need fundamental, comprehensive tax reform to improve our tax system, strengthen the economy, and help American companies compete and win.

“The United States tax system is increasingly out of step with the world economy and its competitors’ tax systems. As countries such as Canada and the United Kingdom have moved to reform their tax systems and lower rates to encourage economic growth, America’s inaction puts American worldwide companies at a competitive disadvantage and threatens our economic recovery.

“The Chamber believes now is the time for comprehensive, fundamental tax reform that lowers the individual and corporate rates and keeps them synchronized. Reform should also shift to a territorial tax system, bring taxpayers certainty, simplify the tax code, and provide adequate transition rules to get our tax code from where it is now to where it should be.

“Ultimately, the marketplace, and not the tax system, should allocate capital and resources. We can’t allow our tax code to continue to punish American businesses and taxpayers. We need reform and we need it now if we are serious about driving economic growth, creating jobs, and enhancing American competitiveness.”
The U.S. Chamber of Commerce is the world’s largest business federation representing the interests of more than 3 million businesses of all sizes, sectors, and regions, as well as state and local chambers and industry associations.

Premiere Global Sports Deploys Symantec Solutions to Secure and Back Up Virtual Systems

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. – March 27, 2012 – Symantec Corp. (Nasdaq: SYMC) today announced that Premiere Global Sports, a provider of specialized sports travel and hospitality products is using Symantec Protection Suite Enterprise Edition and Symantec Backup Exec to centralize protection of the company’s distributed endpoints. While Premiere Global Sports is a small business, the data they produce is growing on an enterprise scale and thus needs the protection of an enterprise-class solution. Since the deployment, Premiere Global Sports can protect, back up, and provide disaster recovery capabilities for its virtualized business systems.

Premiere Global Sports has grown by acquisition over the last decade, and as a result, most of its 75 full-time employees are distributed across the United States. Consequently, all of its endpoints were managed individually with a variety of antivirus products.

“Many of the companies we acquired were flying by the seat of their pants and didn’t have time to focus on IT infrastructure,” said Jason Drake, Premiere Global Sports’ director of infrastructure and security. “We were tasked with choosing expandable platforms that can meet more needs than we have right now.”

Centralizing Endpoint Protection
Based on past positive experiences, Drake selected Symantec Protection Suite Enterprise Edition to centralize protection of its distributed endpoints and to protect multiple independent servers and dozens of Windows endpoints. In addition to endpoint security, the Symantec Protection Suite Enterprise Edition license includes email server security, email and web gateway virtual appliances, and desktop system recovery. The Enterprise Edition will accommodate Premiere Global Sports’ future growth.

“Having Symantec Protection Suite in place—especially with its defense against zero-day threats—definitely makes me feel more at ease,” Drake said. “By leveraging the new security management solution, we can pinpoint security threats and increase the productivity of our security operations.”

Reliable Backup and Recovery for a Virtualized IT Environment
To support Premiere Global Sports’ growing business, Drake and his team chose Symantec Backup Exec to reduce downtime and ensure critical information on both their virtual and physical systems is always protected and restored in seconds.

“Our IT environment is 90 – 95 percent virtualized, and we continue to leverage this technology to reduce costs and the number of physical servers,” said Drake. “We have trusted Backup Exec to backup our data for several years and the transition from a physical server infrastructure to virtual infrastructure didn’t change our choice in a data protection solution.”

Backup Exec simplifies both backup and disaster recovery, allowing Drake to focus on strategic programs. Plus, Premiere Global Sports will soon begin beta testing Backup Exec 2012 as its deduplication features will streamline backup operations even further.

“Based on my testing, Backup Exec gives me the ability to recover both physical and virtual systems in case of a catastrophe,” Drake said. “Symantec’s V-Ray technology embedded in Backup Exec also allows us to easily expand to a virtual environment and feel confident in our decision.”

News Release from CA Technologies - Hybrid Data Protection to SMBs

New CA ARCserve D2D On Demand Delivers Fast, Cost-Effective Hybrid Data Protection to SMBs

Flexible SaaS Solution Combines Local Backup Speed With Windows Azure Cloud Storage
ISLANDIA, NY, February 23, 2012 – CA Technologies (NASDAQ: CA) today announced CA ARCserve® D2D On Demand, a hybrid software-as-a-service (SaaS) data protection and disaster recovery solution that enables small businesses to meet demanding backup windows while protecting the integrity and availability of critical systems, applications and information.
Unlike solutions that only provide local protection or only back up directly to the cloud, CA ARCserve D2D On Demand combines on-premise resources for fast backup and bare-metal recovery capabilities with Windows Azure™ cloud storage for secure offsite protection and archiving of critical files.  This hybrid approach enables SMBs to successfully protect their relentlessly growing volume of data within limited budget constraints.
"Now that SMBs are experiencing the same intensive proliferation of high-value data as their enterprise counterparts, they are in desperate need of a backup solution that is fast, scalable, easy to implement, richly functional and priced right," said Steve Fairbanks, vice president, Data Management, CA Technologies.  "CA ARCserve D2D On Demand uniquely delivers on these key criteria by leveraging the inherent strengths of both on-premise and cloud models—enabling SMB customers to quickly and easily achieve their data protection objectives."
Utilizing patent-pending Infinite Incremental (I2) Technology™, CA ARCserve D2D On Demand enables companies to conduct frequent backups with minimal impact on storage resources, processing power and network bandwidth.  Users can quickly restore files, application data, volumes or entire systems—even to dissimilar hardware or virtual environments—from a single snapshot backup.
Through a central web portal users and partners can easily obtain information on when the last backup occurred, total number of machines licensed, amount of time and storage remaining on the contract, and many other helpful resources for managing the subscription account.
Offsite data storage is particularly important for protecting organizations against local disasters, such as fires or floods.
“Windows Azure offers a compelling value proposition in terms of cost, elasticity, security and reliability,” said Walid Abu-Hadba, corporate vice president, Developer & Platform Evangelism Group, Microsoft.  “CA ARCserve D2D On Demand offers a great way of using the power of Windows Azure to make disk-to-disk backup much easier and less expensive.”
CA ARCserve D2D On Demand is sold exclusively through the channel as a comprehensive, turnkey managed service—allowing customers to treat backup as a fixed operational cost, rather than requiring both high capital expenditure and indeterminate ongoing ownership costs.  The seamless inclusion of Windows Azure cloud storage also spares customers and partners the burden of engineering their own integration with cloud infrastructure or contracting separately with a cloud storage-as-a-service provider.
“It is essential for us to rigorously protect our IT environment—but the cost and hassle of backing up to tape, storing tapes offsite, and properly cataloging them for possible emergency restoration is impractical,” said Tyler Rast, general manager and vice president of operation at Beehive Brick & Stone, a large masonry products provider in Utah.  “With CA ARCserve D2D On Demand, we now get fast, reliable off-site protection of our critical data on a straightforward subscription basis that keeps our costs low and predictable.”
CA ARCserve D2D On Demand is offered through monthly or annual subscription licensing that includes 25GB of Windows Azure cloud storage per protected machine.  Additional cloud storage is available in tiered capacity bands.  Customers can pool their purchased cloud storage resources and share them among protected machines.
CA ARCserve D2D On Demand is also an ideal solution for MSPs seeking to include turnkey data protection offerings in their cloud services portfolios.
“In addition to its technical excellence, CA ARCserve D2D On Demand is designed to flawlessly handle usage reporting and billing for MSPs re-selling cloud backup,” said Vinny DiSpigno, CEO of Webistix, Inc., a New York-based MSP.  “We expect this to be a great way for us to generate recurring revenue stream with minimal upfront investment.”
