Cisco and EMC Take “Three Paths to the Cloud” Strategy to the Next Level

EMC Press Release
Cisco and EMC Take “Three Paths to the Cloud” Strategy to the Next Level
New Joint Reference Architectures, Aligned Channel Incentives and Integrated Customer Support Accelerate VSPEX Momentum New Offerings Support VCE Vblock in Delivering Customers Unmatched Cloud Infrastructure Choice and Flexibility
VMworld – San Francisco, CA - August 28, 2012
Cisco and EMC Corporation (NYSE: EMC) today announced further collaboration to help accelerate IT transformation by providing customers with unrivaled choice and flexibility via "three paths to the cloud" — custom-design infrastructure, validated reference architectures, and pre-integrated converged infrastructure. Cisco® and EMC® introduced new joint reference architectures, aligned channel partner incentives, and integrated customer support to speed customers' path to the cloud.
Building on a decade-long partnership, Cisco and EMC now provide enterprise and service provider customers with an unmatched menu of options to build cloud infrastructure. The "three paths to the cloud" include:

Partnership Highlights:

  • The two new Cisco® Validated Designs (CVD) for EMC VSPEX are unified computing reference architectures tailored to SMB and mid-market customers. Designed to accelerate the journey to the private cloud, the CVDs are Cisco Solutions for EMC VSPEX for Microsoft Hyper-V Architectures andCisco Solutions for EMC VSPEX for VMware vSphere 5.0 Architectures.
  • More than 200 Cisco and EMC Velocity™ channel partners within the global VSPEX community have been trained to resell and deploy EMC VSPEX with Cisco Unified Data Center.
  • Cisco and EMC have also aligned their channel incentive structures to simplify the process of accruing incentives and boost partner profitability.
  • Cisco and EMC have implemented a customer support framework for VSPEX for collaborative case management.
  • VCE — Cisco and EMC's joint venture with VMware — pioneered a groundbreaking integrated data center offering with end-to-end vendor visibility, enabling the leading time-to-market and one of the lowest TCO for converged cloud infrastructure.
  • VCE's fully productized converged infrastructure standardizes processes and life cycle management to significantly improve application availability and enable VCE's unique seamless support experience.
  • VCE continues to gain traction in enterprise data centers as well as in cloud service providers with hundreds of VCE Vblock Systems in production at mission-critical data centers worldwide.
  • VCE demand continues its strong growth in the most recent fiscal quarter and remains on track to reach a $1 billion revenue run rate.

Customer Quotes:

Rajinder Gill, Group Finance Director, Minor, Weir & Willis Ltd
"Our business needed a complete network and infrastructure upgrade in order to implement a new ERP system. VSPEX was an obvious fit for our environment and working closely with Synapse, we reduced our deployment and integration time. The prior validation work performed by Cisco, EMC and Synapse on VSPEX reduced our risk and complexity. Because of the tight integration between EMC, Cisco and VSPEX, we have decided to leverage the VSPEX platform as the primary core of our network and infrastructure for all current and future applications."
Rob Walters, Vice President, Product Management, SunGard Availability Service
"As a service provider we want our development teams working on value-added services that differentiate our offerings in the marketplace, rather than integrating best of breed infrastructure components. Vblock helps us to do that successfully for our multi-tenant enterprise cloud, and the VSPEX reference architectures will make the process of delivering tailored solutions to our customers’ private cloud needs much easier. The collaborative support framework that is part of VSPEX is particularly critical, as it will avoid the difficulties so often encountered with multi-vendor solutions."

Channel Partner Quotes:

Joe Coxon, Business Development Manager, Synapse
"Many of the customers we work with want to deploy a cloud, but aren't quite sure how to do so quickly and easily. VSPEX is a powerful solution that helps us deploy clouds for our customers quickly and efficiently. By leveraging our expert understanding of client requirements, and Cisco's and EMC's industry-leading technologies, we can deliver a complete solution that matches our customers' business needs."
Dave Hart, Executive Vice President and Chief Technology Officer, Presidio
"We deliver the ultimate in choice and flexibility to our customers by offering solutions based on EMC and Cisco technologies. We're seeing a lot of demand for Vblock Systems with larger enterprise and service provider customers and VSPEX configurations allow us to reach a broader market. Both enable us to provide our unique expertise and differentiated value to help customers meet their business requirements."

Cisco Quote:

Rick Snyder, Vice President, Global and Strategic Partners, Cisco
"Cisco and EMC partner every day in the engineering labs and in the field, helping customers around the world transform their data centers and strengthen their business. Through VCE we've unleashed market-moving innovation through the pre-engineered, pre-integrated Vblock Systems. Now, we're working together to meet customer demand with Cisco Validated Designs for EMC VSPEX and aligned channel incentives to accelerate VSPEX adoption."

EMC Quote:

Josh Kahn, Vice President, Solutions Marketing, EMC Corporation
"VCE enables customers to standardize on a converged infrastructure solution, dramatically accelerating their journey to the cloud. We are very pleased with VCE's momentum and the benefits it is delivering to customers around the world. Building upon this, we are very excited to accelerate our partnership with Cisco on VSPEX to address market requirements for best-of-breed reference architectures offered exclusively via the channel. Channel partners are seeking solutions that reduce complexity and simplify the deployment for their customers."

Emulex and Enterprise Strategy Group to Present on 16Gb Fibre Channel Performance and Efficiency for Cloud and Virtualized Environments

COSTA MESA, Calif., August 20, 2012 – Emulex Corporation (NYSE:ELX), today announced that it will be hosting a webcast on Friday, August 24 entitled "How to Increase Performance and Virtualization Efficiency with Emulex 16Gb Fibre Channel (16GFC) HBAs” at 9:00 a.m. PT.

The webcast, hosted by Emulex and presented with Enterprise Strategy Group (ESG) analysts Bob Laliberte, senior analyst and Tony Palmer, senior engineer and analyst, will focus on a recent ESG Lab Validation Report of Emulex LightPulse ® 16Gb Fibre Channel (16GFC) HBAs. Barbara Porter, product marketing manager, will also participate in the webcast. The webcast will also provide an in-depth analysis of the 16GFC industry, including market drivers for adoption, and an overview of the ESG Lab Validation of Emulex’s high performance, low latency 16GFC adapters, built for cloud and highly virtualized environments.

The ESG Lab Validation report, which was conducted leveraging the Emulex LPe16000 and LPe16002 adapters, explores the adapters’ ability to improve virtualization efficiency and increase performance in an 8Gb or 16Gb environment as well as ease of management and simplicity of deployment of the LPe16000 series.

Additional highlights of the report include the following:
  • ESG Lab was able to deploy and manage a LPe16002 HBA into an existing SAN environment side by side with multiple generations of Emulex HBAs using Emulex OneCommand® Manager for a single consistent point of management.
  • •ESG Lab confirmed that Emulex has developed a robust and very full-featured vCenter plug-in that provides all the functionality of OneCommand Manager, including the distribution of mass firmware updates directly from the vCenter console.
  • The LPe16000 series of HBAs run the same drivers as previous-generation Emulex adapters, simplifying management and maintenance.
  • The performance of the LPe16002 HBA tested by ESG Lab was particularly impressive, driving more than five times the OLTP IOPS of its 8GFC predecessor. Even more impressive was the fact that this increase in performance came with a 50% decrease in I/O response time.

Emulex Joins Network Intelligence Alliance

Press release:

Emulex Joins Network Intelligence Alliance

Membership Drives Collaboration Around Next-Generation Network Intelligence Solutions From Emulex And Participating Companies

COSTA MESA, Calif., August 8, 2012– Emulex Corporation (NYSE:ELX) today announced that it has become a member of the Network Intelligence Alliance (NI Alliance), a new industry organization created for collaboration among the Network Economy’s technology providers. The NI Alliance serves as a forum for collaboration among technology providers whose solutions secure data in transit, ensure efficient data delivery, monetize data transactions or track real-time information. Participation in the NI Alliance will help Emulex continue to build, market and broaden its innovative High Performance Networking (HPN) solutions including the newEmulex OneConnect® Network Xceleration (NX) OCe12000-D family of 10Gb Ethernet (10GbE) network adapters and FastStack™ Sniffer10G software.
The Emulex OneConnect NX family provides full 10G line rate with lossless packet capture and injection, regardless of packet size. This capability is critical in cyber and network security applications, such as deep packet inspection (DPI), as any dropped packets can potentially compromise the effectiveness of an organization’s network security efforts. The Emulex NX solution with FastStack Sniffer10G integrates into standard x86-based server platforms to provide easy to deploy and cost-effective deep packet probes for solution vendors who provide the next generation of network monitoring and lawful intercept solutions for carriers and service providers requiring high performance, yet cost-effective DPI solutions.
“Joining the NI Alliance gives us the opportunity to collaborate with other companies in addressing their network performance needs where extreme performance is required, such as cyber and network security or High Frequency Trading,” said Shaun Walsh, senior vice president of marketing and business development, Emulex. “Today’s electronically-connected world leaves businesses open to network attacks but being able to quickly capture and analyze packets without disrupting other server operations is possible with an HPN. The NI Alliance will enable us to expand our reach with HPN solutions that deliver extreme performance and reduce the risk for security attacks.”
In a world that now depends and runs on networks - accurate visibility and precise tracking of data crossing networks have become crucial to the availability, performance and security of applications and services. The growing complexity of IP transactions, the explosion of mobile applications, and the mainstream adoption of cloud computing surpass the capabilities of conventional tools to improve how networks operate, expand services, and cope with cyber security. Network Intelligence technology is an emerging category of technology to reveal the critical details of the data locked inside network traffic and transactions.
“Emulex is a valuable addition to the NI Alliance and we welcome their participation,” said Erik Larsson, Chairman of the NI Alliance. “By joining the NI Alliance, Emulex increases its commitment to customers with greater capabilities to identify, develop and support innovative, more comprehensive solutions based on Network Intelligence.”

HP Revolutionizes Enterprise Customer Support for the Cloud Era

Always On Support Services from HP deliver issue prevention, improved first-time resolution rates and reduced downtime

Topics:Converged Infrastructure
PALO ALTO, Calif. -- HP today announced the industry’s first IT support services architected for multivendor, converged and cloud environments, helping enterprises address problems before they occur, realize 95-percent first-time resolution rates and resolve unplanned downtime issues up to 66 percent faster.(1)
The new Always On Support Services from HP integrate the intelligent technologies built into the HP Converged Infrastructure with innovative services to deliver a modern support experience for today’s complex IT environments.
Legacy support services offer a break/fix model for an individual piece of equipment in a single technology silo. However, that equipment is likely part of a virtualized, multivendor or cloud environment with interdependencies across the IT infrastructure, adding a level of complexity to operations.
Diagnosing problems in these environments can be slow, leading to unplanned downtime that can cost the average enterprise $10 million per hour.(2) As a result, today’s enterprises need a new outlook regarding support.
According to a recent Gartner report, the definition of support is changing. Customers want and need support services that help them to avoid issues occurring far more than they need reactive services that fix problems after the fact.(3)
In instances where predictive measures aren’t enough, clients also require more streamlined support when a problem arises, such as a single point of contact that is familiar with their environment and can resolve issues quickly.
“Technology advances such as virtualization and flexible infrastructures are combining with multivendor environments to create complexity and make today’s technology environments much more challenging than in the past. As a result, customers need and expect more from their support providers,” said Rob Addy, research director, Gartner. “Legacy support models are becoming less relevant. It is time for a complete overhaul of support practices. The use of predictive and proactive prevention based methodologies is now highly desirable.”
Offering proactive support from informed expertsAlways On Support Services from HP provide “direct to expert” communication with a professional who already knows the client, the details of the client’s environment and what the client’s system is experiencing prior to the first call.
The recently announced HP ProLiant Gen8 Servers were built with this new service model in mind. By tightly integrating server diagnostic data with advanced HP Insight Remote Support automation tools, new support and delivery capabilities, and customer warranty information, HP can provide an economical support experience that is unmatched for industry-standard environments.
“Enterprises need to be built on a technology foundation that helps IT shift time and resources from problem resolution to innovation,” said Antonio Neri, senior vice president and general manager, Technology Services, HP. “The traditional reactive IT support model is no longer effective – the industry needs to change the way it delivers support to offer proactive solutions and customized service offerings – and HP is leading that charge.”
Convergence of support and HP Converged Infrastructure
To deliver an enhanced client experience along with proactive problem resolution, Always On Support Services from HP continuously monitor the 1,600 diagnostic data points collected by the HP ProActive Insight Architecture. This architecture, currently embedded in HP ProLiant Gen8 servers, will soon be integrated across the entire HP Converged Infrastructure portfolio.
Always On Support Services from HP include:
  • HP Foundation Care – expedites problem resolution for optimal performance by simplifying support with a single point of contact at HP for both the hardware and software in the client’s environment. By leveraging relationships with leading independent software vendors (ISVs), HP eliminates the “finger pointing” typical of legacy support models.

  • HP Proactive Care – minimizes downtime and optimizes performance by addressing problems before they occur. It also provides immediate and direct access to HP experts so clients receive the right support and guidance, when they need it. This eliminates the delay spent cycling through escalating levels of support personnel often associated with legacy support models.

  • HP Datacenter Care – provides customized support for a client’s multivendor environment with a single point of contact at HP. It delivers enhanced call handling, proactive services, reactive support and relationship management enabled by HP tools and predictive analytics to deliver premium value at a cost-effective price.

HP also offers Lifecycle Event Services that augment the above HP Care portfolio with HP expertise throughout the technology life cycle of an IT project. This includes strategy, design, implementation and education services, allowing clients to select services “a la carte” to best serve their needs.

Always On Support Services from HP are available now through HP Technology Services and HP authorized partners. They can be delivered by certified HP ServiceONE partners.
HP’s premier client event, HP Discover, takes place June 4-7 in Las Vegas.

As well as providing mobile communication services to around 5.8 million customers and 1.6 million broadband connections, Swisscom now offers UC&C as a managed service for its corporate customers. A high-performance HP Converged Infrastructure based on HP CloudSystem  enables Swisscom to offer a rapidly deployed, fully managed service for unified communications at a fixed price per user per month.
“Integrated communications solutions are becoming increasingly complex for businesses to operate,” said Frank Fitzlaff, head of User Experience Design, Corporate Business, Swisscom. “Swisscom’s managed services help customers focus on their own businesses while we take care of their communications and collaboration infrastructures. HP’s mature, flexible solution is driving business growth for Swisscom by enabling us to roll out new services rapidly. HP CloudSystem Matrix has fundamentally changed the way we deliver business services.”
A robust, scalable HP CloudSystem Matrix provides a private cloud environment that allows Swisscom to deliver UC&C services in as little as four weeks. The virtualized platform gives Swisscom the flexibility to accommodate individual customer needs while reducing overall infrastructure costs. The service can be managed and run either in the Swisscom data center or on a dedicated environment in the customer’s own data center.
The private cloud solution in Swisscom’s data center was installed and implemented by HP Technology Services. Based on an HP CloudSystem  platform running VMware ESX, it includes:
  • HP ProLiant BL460 G7 server blades for maximum throughput to support Swisscom’s business-critical applications;
  • Robust, flexible 10 Gb HP 5820 networking switches, which automatically assign VLANs for lower bandwidth VoIP traffic, freeing bandwidth for high-speed broadband transmission;
  • HP 3PAR V-Class Storage Systems for cloud computing, which deliver storage as a utility service simply, efficiently and flexibly;
  • HP StoreOnce Backup Systems with data deduplication software developed by HP Labs, the company’s central research arm, which provide a simple, cost-effective disk backup solution to meet all Swisscom’s storage needs without increasing data center footprint;
  • HP Data Protector software, which reduces backup and recovery complexity by protecting Swisscom’s virtual and physical applications from a central console, eliminating the need for multiple backup tools.
The core infrastructure for unifying communications and delivering the portal is based on resilient HP ProLiant BladeSystem c7000 enclosures with HP ProLiant BL460 G7 server blades, running VMware ESX for maximum resilience and availability.
To guard against loss of business-critical information, on-premise deployments use HP ProLiant DL380 G7 servers with an HP P4300 SAN (storage area network) running Microsoft® HyperV. Currently, around 60 percent of Swisscom’s Switzerland-based corporate customers use HP hardware in their data centers.
All on-site installations are supported by a four-year, 24/7 Support Plus 24 contract with HP Technology Services to ensure the reliability and performance of the whole infrastructure.
HP Converged Infrastructure is a key element to an Instant-On Enterprise. In a world of continuous connectivity, the Instant-On Enterprise embeds technology in everything it does to serve customers, employees, partners and citizens with whatever they need, instantly.
HP’s premier client event, HP Discover, takes place June 4-7 in Las Vegas.
