Emulex and Enterprise Strategy Group to Present on 16Gb Fibre Channel Performance and Efficiency for Cloud and Virtualized Environments

COSTA MESA, Calif., August 20, 2012 – Emulex Corporation (NYSE:ELX), today announced that it will be hosting a webcast on Friday, August 24 entitled "How to Increase Performance and Virtualization Efficiency with Emulex 16Gb Fibre Channel (16GFC) HBAs” at 9:00 a.m. PT.

The webcast, hosted by Emulex and presented with Enterprise Strategy Group (ESG) analysts Bob Laliberte, senior analyst and Tony Palmer, senior engineer and analyst, will focus on a recent ESG Lab Validation Report of Emulex LightPulse ® 16Gb Fibre Channel (16GFC) HBAs. Barbara Porter, product marketing manager, will also participate in the webcast. The webcast will also provide an in-depth analysis of the 16GFC industry, including market drivers for adoption, and an overview of the ESG Lab Validation of Emulex’s high performance, low latency 16GFC adapters, built for cloud and highly virtualized environments.

The ESG Lab Validation report, which was conducted leveraging the Emulex LPe16000 and LPe16002 adapters, explores the adapters’ ability to improve virtualization efficiency and increase performance in an 8Gb or 16Gb environment as well as ease of management and simplicity of deployment of the LPe16000 series.

Additional highlights of the report include the following:
  • ESG Lab was able to deploy and manage a LPe16002 HBA into an existing SAN environment side by side with multiple generations of Emulex HBAs using Emulex OneCommand® Manager for a single consistent point of management.
  • •ESG Lab confirmed that Emulex has developed a robust and very full-featured vCenter plug-in that provides all the functionality of OneCommand Manager, including the distribution of mass firmware updates directly from the vCenter console.
  • The LPe16000 series of HBAs run the same drivers as previous-generation Emulex adapters, simplifying management and maintenance.
  • The performance of the LPe16002 HBA tested by ESG Lab was particularly impressive, driving more than five times the OLTP IOPS of its 8GFC predecessor. Even more impressive was the fact that this increase in performance came with a 50% decrease in I/O response time.

Emulex Leads 16Gb Fibre Channel Adapter Market

Company Gains Over Four Points of Fibre Channel Market Share Over Nearest Competitor

COSTA MESA, Calif., August 15, 2012 – Emulex Corporation (NYSE:ELX) today announced that it leads the 16Gb Fibre Channel (16GFC) market with over 75 percent of the revenue market share according to both Dell'Oro Group's Q2 2012 Network Controller and Adapter report and Crehan Research's Q2 2012 Server-class Adapter and LOM market share report. In addition, the company gained over four points of overall Fibre Channel revenue market share over its nearest competitor according to the two research firms’ latest reports.

“The growth of the total data in the storage universe will nearly triple from 2.7 zettabytes in 2012 to more than 8 zettabytes by 2015, according to IDC,¹” said Shaun Walsh, senior vice president of marketing and corporate development, Emulex. “Given this level of continued data growth, we expect the demand for 16GFC bandwidth will accelerate the transition from 8GFC to 16GFC. Crehan Research share’s this view, predicting that 16GFC will represent 30 percent of the Fibre Channel server-class adapter ports by 2013, ² representing a 25 percent faster transition to 16GFC than the transition to 8GFC.²”

Emulex LightPulse® (LP)e16000 series of 16GFC Host Bus Adapters (HBAs) are optimized for cloud and virtualized environments, delivering more than a million IOPS on a single port3,while simplifying and streamlining server and storage SAN connectivity requirements, and cutting the response time by 75 percent compared to its 8GFC predecessor. ⁴Upgrading to these new Emulex 16GFC adapters is simple, with full backward compatibility with 4 and 8GFC adapters from Emulex, including a common driver stack and management tools across multiple generations. In addition to future proofing customer’s connectivity investment, Emulex 16GFC HBAs provide higher performance and lower latency even when running in 8GFC mode in an 8GFC environment, ⁴making Emulex 16GFC HBAs an ideal choice for customers looking to leverage their storage infrastructure investments into the future.

Emulex Joins Network Intelligence Alliance

Press release:

Emulex Joins Network Intelligence Alliance

Membership Drives Collaboration Around Next-Generation Network Intelligence Solutions From Emulex And Participating Companies

COSTA MESA, Calif., August 8, 2012– Emulex Corporation (NYSE:ELX) today announced that it has become a member of the Network Intelligence Alliance (NI Alliance), a new industry organization created for collaboration among the Network Economy’s technology providers. The NI Alliance serves as a forum for collaboration among technology providers whose solutions secure data in transit, ensure efficient data delivery, monetize data transactions or track real-time information. Participation in the NI Alliance will help Emulex continue to build, market and broaden its innovative High Performance Networking (HPN) solutions including the newEmulex OneConnect® Network Xceleration (NX) OCe12000-D family of 10Gb Ethernet (10GbE) network adapters and FastStack™ Sniffer10G software.
The Emulex OneConnect NX family provides full 10G line rate with lossless packet capture and injection, regardless of packet size. This capability is critical in cyber and network security applications, such as deep packet inspection (DPI), as any dropped packets can potentially compromise the effectiveness of an organization’s network security efforts. The Emulex NX solution with FastStack Sniffer10G integrates into standard x86-based server platforms to provide easy to deploy and cost-effective deep packet probes for solution vendors who provide the next generation of network monitoring and lawful intercept solutions for carriers and service providers requiring high performance, yet cost-effective DPI solutions.
“Joining the NI Alliance gives us the opportunity to collaborate with other companies in addressing their network performance needs where extreme performance is required, such as cyber and network security or High Frequency Trading,” said Shaun Walsh, senior vice president of marketing and business development, Emulex. “Today’s electronically-connected world leaves businesses open to network attacks but being able to quickly capture and analyze packets without disrupting other server operations is possible with an HPN. The NI Alliance will enable us to expand our reach with HPN solutions that deliver extreme performance and reduce the risk for security attacks.”
In a world that now depends and runs on networks - accurate visibility and precise tracking of data crossing networks have become crucial to the availability, performance and security of applications and services. The growing complexity of IP transactions, the explosion of mobile applications, and the mainstream adoption of cloud computing surpass the capabilities of conventional tools to improve how networks operate, expand services, and cope with cyber security. Network Intelligence technology is an emerging category of technology to reveal the critical details of the data locked inside network traffic and transactions.
“Emulex is a valuable addition to the NI Alliance and we welcome their participation,” said Erik Larsson, Chairman of the NI Alliance. “By joining the NI Alliance, Emulex increases its commitment to customers with greater capabilities to identify, develop and support innovative, more comprehensive solutions based on Network Intelligence.”

Emulex to Continue Redesign of Products

Emulex to Continue Redesign of Products Impacting Five Percent of Net Revenues

Court Approves Continued Shipment of Impacted Products Worldwide

COSTA MESA, Calif., March 19, 2012 – Emulex Corporation (NYSE: ELX) today reported the continued implementation of design changes for products impacted by the issuance of an injunction for two patents by the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California in the lawsuit filed against Emulex by Broadcom Corporation (NASDAQ: BRCM), based on U.S. revenues for sales of impacted products that were about five percent of Emulex’s net revenues for its second quarter of fiscal 2012. The injunction included a “sunset period” of 18 months for Emulex to continue selling impacted products in the US without design changes. Based on the jury assessment of royalties, and the terms of the injunction, Emulex estimates a charge of approximately $600,000 in liability for damages to Broadcom to its third quarter fiscal 2012 GAAP results. This amount is in addition to the $387,922 in liability previously reported by Emulex for that patent during the first quarter of 2012.
For its second fiscal quarter which ended on January 1, 2012, Emulex reported net revenues of $128.7 million, 76 percent (or $97.8 million) of which came from outside the US based on billed-to location. For the second fiscal quarter of fiscal 2012, the net revenues in the US for products impacted by issuance of the injunction were approximately $7 million. The design changes primarily focus on serializer/deserializer (SerDes) modules, which Emulex does not design but obtains from several suppliers, and which are included in impacted Emulex products. The impacted Emulex products include BE2, BE3, XE201, SOC 320, SOC 422 and SOC 442 ASICs, and products containing those ASICs.
“Emulex is dedicated to protecting the interest of its customers,” said Jim McCluney, the Chief Executive Officer of Emulex. “We have been working with our suppliers to implement design changes to the SerDes modules included in the impacted products.”
Broadcom had earlier asserted 12 different US patents against Emulex. Emulex presented a vigorous defense prior to the trial, and only 6 patents remained by the time of trial. After three weeks of trial, the court determined that one of the patents (7,058,150) had been infringed by Emulex, and the jury rendered an advisory verdict to the Court that it is not invalid, and awarded $387,922 in damages with respect to that patent. Subsequently, the judge determined that a second patent (7,471,691) had been infringed by Emulex. With respect to the remaining four patents, the jury found one not infringed and could not reach a unanimous verdict on the other three. Emulex intends to continue to vigorously defend its products, including a potential appeal.
