Extreme Networks Joins US-Ignite Public/Private Effort to Drive Cloud and SDN High Speed Networking in America

Alliance spurs next generation of Internet services and applications over networks throughout 25+ US communities

SANTA CLARA, Calif.Sept. 26, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Extreme Networks, Inc. (Nasdaq: EXTR) today announced that it has joined as a sponsor company of US Ignite, a US based public-private partnership launched at the White House earlier this year. The mission of US Ignite is to catalyze highly advanced applications that leverage next-generation Internet networks — or "gigabit networks" — to dramatically improve how Americans work in and experience education, advanced manufacturing, transportation, public safety, clean energy, and healthcare.

"In order to test highly advanced applications, we are facilitating the connection between cities and regions with new high speed networks across the country, and Extreme Networks joins us at a critical time as one of the pioneering leaders in Ethernet technology," said Sue Spradley, US Ignite Executive Director.  "Collaboration between the brightest minds and resources from private U.S. companies in concert with our university and community partners will bring transformative new applications to American homes and businesses."

"Today's leaders realize that the efficiencies and innovation delivered by emerging network infrastructure has great potential going beyond conventional uses and yesterday's slow speeds," said Oscar Rodriguez, president and CEO of Extreme Networks. "Leveraging the promise of technologies like SDN and the Cloud, over ultra-fast connectivity backed by 10GbE, 40GbE, and in the near future 100 GbE, offers significant potential for rich video, rapid storage and on-demand data."

Helping Network Communities:

Responsibilities of the US Ignite Partnership include connecting, convening, and supporting startups, local and state government, universities, industry leaders, federal agencies, foundations, and community and carrier initiatives in conceptualizing and building new applications.

"Extreme Networks is already helping universities and government realize the vision of next gen networking, such as in the state capitol ofBismarck, ND, and partnering with US-Ignite further demonstrates its commitment to these worthy goals," said Tom McDougall, president ofHigh Point Networks, a technology and service integrator and Extreme Networks partner based in North Dakota.  "Ethernet makes it easier and cost effective."

The advanced technologies that will power the US Ignite initiative have been developed through the National Science Foundation's GENI (Global Environment for Network Innovation) program and by US Ignite's commercial partners.  Extreme Networks specializes in high capacity, low latency Ethernet switches, SDN and open software that delivers rich media, mobile convergence and the high bandwidth required for business, government and education.

The US Ignite partnership was formed with leadership from the National Science Foundation in response to the Administration's call to ensure all Americans have access to the information and tools necessary to thrive in a 21st-century economy.
