Wilkens Weather Technologies predicts 2013 tropical storm season

Rockwell Collins News Release:

Wilkens Weather Technologies predicts 2013 tropical storm season
HOUSTON (May 30, 2013) –Wilkens Weather Technologies, a Rockwell Collins company located in Houston, Texas, is garnering extra exposure this year by sharing its hurricane season forecast with large online and trade show audiences.
Offshore Engineer — one of the most widely-read trade journals in the oil and gas industry — featured a Wilkens Weather tropical storm season forecast in a special online edition earlier this month. It provided a rare public glimpse into the capabilities of Wilkens Weather, which primarily provides forecasting and custom alerts for petroleum industry and shipping industry clients.
Authored by Aaron Studwell, a senior meteorologist and tropical specialist at Wilkens Weather, the forecast predicts above-average tropical storm activity across the tropical Atlantic basin due to above normal surface sea temperatures across the equatorial North Atlantic Ocean. The forecast was distributed by Wilkens Weather staff to clients and potential clients at the Offshore Technology Conference held recently in Houston, fueling interest in Wilkens Weather’s services.
The clientele of Wilkens Weather is never indifferent to hurricane season, even when the forecast is not calling for an unusually high amount of storm activity. That is because thousands of employees and billions of dollars in assets ranging from offshore rigs and refineries to oceangoing tankers are at risk to dangerous weather.
“The whole argument is around the fact that it only takes one [storm],” said Studwell, who knows from personal experience. His home, which is about 100 miles inland from the Gulf of Mexico, sustained nearly $30,000 in damage from Hurricane Ike.
Wilkens Weather Technologies — acquired in 2010 along with Air Routing International — employs more than 25 degreed meteorologists who provide weather forecasting coverage around the clock.
Wilkens differs from the National Weather Service and the National Hurricane Center by offering customized alerts for specific customer-owned assets as it tracks storm systems. Some clients that require employees to begin evacuating 72 hours before a storm hits use Wilkens Weather to provide timeline of the storm’s approach.
The company’s tropical weather coverage extends around the globe. Wilkens Weather has increased its forecasting coverage of the South China Sea — a fast-growing exploration and production basin for the petroleum industry. It also is building a reputation for its lightning service, which provides text and e-mail notifications to offshore operators when lightning activity is affecting their locations.
