This is not a new idea.
In the 1070s, the airlines wanted to introduce the Supersonic Transport, or SST. The SST would have greatly reduced travel times, but there was great resistance from the public because people didn't want to be hearing sonic booms all the time.
Eventually, a compromise was reached and the Concorde was allowed to make limited flights across the Atlantic.
