Oregon Health Sciences University Upgrades to Oracle E-Business Suite 12.1 to Improve Organizational Efficiencies and IT Agility

Leading Academic Health and Research University Enhances Core Financial, HR, Enterprise Asset Management and Warehouse Processes

Redwood Shores, CA – June 24, 2013

News Facts

To meet the complex and changing demands of the healthcare industry, Oregon Health Sciences University, the only academic health and research university in Oregon, has upgraded to the Oracle E-Business Suite 12.1.
With more than 14,000 medical and research employees, a 140-acre campus, and approximately 4,300 graduate students, Oregon Health Sciences University (OHSU) focuses on primary care, nursing, and cancer and cardiothoracic research.
OHSU needed a modern, flexible and scalable platform that could help drive efficiencies across its core financial, HR and organizational processes.
By upgrading to the Oracle E-Business Suite 12.1, OHSU has been able to benefit from a comprehensive and modern suite of business applications to gain accurate and timely detailed insights into its financial operations, improve employee engagement, and coordinate and streamline general operations.
The Oracle E-Business Suite Financials modules, including Oracle General Ledger, have enabled OSHU to more efficiently manage the rigorous auditing processes and help reduce the time taken for month-end reporting involved in the healthcare industry. Subledger Accounting, which can be used to expand Financials applications, has helped with daily transaction processes around cash management and gives OHSU the ability to see patient revenues on a day-to-day basis as opposed to a month-end basis.
In addition, OHSU uses Oracle Projects to manage all of their capital projects across the institution. On an annual basis, OHSU has over $150 million worth of capital projects that are using project accounting to keep them organized. Oracle Projects ties into Fixed Assets as well as Oracle Enterprise Asset Management to help manage assets across the campus.
The upgrade has also enabled OSHU to take advantage of Oracle E-Business Suite 12.1 Human Capital Management (HCM) to help improve HR processes and help reduce the time taken to onboard new employees from up to three weeks to as little as two days.
OHSU uses Oracle Enterprise Asset Management to coordinate the maintenance activities for its roughly 6 million square feet of building space and manage $2.5 billion worth of physical assets. This helps keep the hospital running, the research environment moving and the students happy in their classrooms. As a result, OHSU has been able to improve the level of communication to all stakeholders on order status, budgets and actual costs associated with assets.
Oracle Enterprise Assets Management also contributes to OSHU’s sustainability efforts by helping to monitor its energy usage and consumption so it can find ways to reduce its overall energy spend.
Further improving operations across both its hospital and research facilities, OSHU is taking advantage of Oracle Warehouse Management to successfully execute a just-in-time delivery strategy for its products and services that support more than 17,000 patient visits a week.
The greatest value that OHSU has received from their Oracle E-Business Suite 12.1 upgrade is a reduction in customizations to their implementation. Prior to release 12.1, OHSU had over 2000 customizations across the entire campus and since the upgrade has been able to reduce that by almost 80 percent.
