Northrop Grumman Names 24 Maryland Winners in 11th Annual Engineering Scholars CompetitionStudents From 23 Counties and the City of Baltimore Will Each Receive $10,000 Over Four Years | ||
BALTIMORE – June 3, 2013 – Northrop Grumman Corporation (NYSE:NOC) today announced the 24 winners of its 11th annual Engineering Scholars program, which will provide a total of $240,000 in college scholarships this fall to high school seniors across Maryland interested in studying engineering, computer science, physics or math.
"Northrop Grumman is honored to sponsor this scholarship competition that supports the pursuit of an engineering education by some of the state's best-qualified math and science students," said Gloria A. Flach, corporate vice president and president of the company's Baltimore-based Electronic Systems sector. "These talented students represent the future of our country's technology and innovation capability."
The Northrop Grumman Engineering Scholars program is aimed at supporting promising high school seniors who intend to pursue a career in an engineering-related field. Candidates must plan to attend an accredited college or university school of engineering as a full-time student in an approved engineering program. The funds can be used for tuition, books, room and board, and lab fees.
A committee of Northrop Grumman employees selected the Engineering Scholars winners. To be eligible, each scholarship applicant had to be a resident of Maryland and a graduating senior this spring from a public or accredited private high school in the state. Applicants also had to have a minimum composite SAT score of 1,700 or ACT score of 27 and a minimum GPA of 3.5. Recipients of any other Northrop Grumman-sponsored scholarship were not eligible. The committee also took into consideration work experience, community involvement and extracurricular activities.
Following are the names of the students from 23 Maryland counties and the city of Baltimore who each will be receiving merit-based scholarships of $10,000 – payable in $2,500 installments over four years – during an awards reception and dinner hosted by Northrop Grumman at the Baltimore Marriott Waterfront Hotel on June 24.
One of the state's largest private employers, Northrop Grumman is a significant financial and in-kind contributor to educational outreach programs aimed at encouraging young people to consider engineering and science-related career fields. The Electronic Systems sector supports multiple High School Involvement Partnership programs to excite student interest in science, technology, engineering and math. Northrop Grumman is also a major corporate sponsor of the Maryland Teacher of the Year competition.
