UnitedHealthcare Establishes Accountable Care Organizations with Chicago- and Peoria-Area Health Systems to Help Enhance Care, Improve Outcomes and Reduce Costs

UnitedHealth Group News Release:

UnitedHealthcare Establishes Accountable Care Organizations with Chicago- and Peoria-Area Health Systems to Help Enhance Care, Improve Outcomes and Reduce Costs
  • More than 65,000 UnitedHealthcare Medicare Advantage health plan participants to have access to enhanced care coordination and services at Advocate Health Care and Illinois Health Partners

CHICAGO and PEORIA, Ill. (Sep. 24, 2014) —
UnitedHealthcare has established accountable care organizations (ACOs) with Advocate Heath Care and Illinois Health Partners (comprised of physicians affiliated with DuPage Medical Group and Edward-Elmhurst Healthcare) to provide enhanced, coordinated care for more than 65,000 Illinois residents enrolled in UnitedHealthcare’s Medicare Advantage plans.
The new ACOs will help shift the health care system in Chicago and Peoria from one based on volume of care to one that rewards quality and value.
The collaboration between UnitedHealthcare and these health systems is designed to improve health outcomes and reduce costs by facilitating the delivery of more coordinated care for Medicare beneficiaries. UnitedHealthcare will share data and incentives with Advocate Health Care and Illinois Health Partners, with the goal of closing gaps in care and ensuring beneficiaries receive the care they need at the right time in the most appropriate setting. The health systems will share in any savings that result from providing higher-quality, better-managed care.
“We pride ourselves on our ability to provide best-in-class coordinated and compassionate care when and where people need it most through our integrated health system,” said Michael Englehart, president, Advocate Physician Partners. “Working with UnitedHealthcare enhances our ability to address patients’ complex medical needs and allows for improved outcomes, higher patient satisfaction and more affordable health care.”
“We know the existing fee-for-service system is not sustainable in the long term. This new model of enhanced collaboration between care providers and health plans is an important step toward delivering evidence-based, higher-quality care while bringing down costs,” said Lee McGrath, president of Illinois Health Partners. “We appreciate UnitedHealthcare’s efforts to work with us closely to create a customized model that helps facilitate optimal care for our patients.”
People enrolled in UnitedHealthcare Medicare Advantage plans who currently receive care from providers affiliated with Advocate Health Care and Illinois Health Partners will not have to do anything differently to receive the benefits of these new collaborative relationships.
“UnitedHealthcare continues to work with care providers statewide to help enhance health services and improve coordination of care,” said Frank Mancuso of UnitedHealthcare. “We believe our collaboration with Advocate Health Care and Illinois Health Partners will deliver enhanced quality, better outcomes and greater efficiency for our Medicare Advantage members in the Chicago and Peoria areas.”
Nationwide, more than $31 billion of UnitedHealthcare’s annual physician and hospital reimbursements is tied to accountable care programs, centers of excellence and performance-based programs. The company projects this will reach $65 billion by 2018. For more information about UnitedHealthcare’s accountable care initiatives, visitwww.AccountableCareAnswers.com.
