With millions of service members returning home to discouragingly high unemployment numbers, Chuck Sevola, vice president and head of the Office of Veterans Initiatives at Prudential, says it's important for businesses to leverage the skills and talent today's veterans bring to the workforce.

According to a 2012 Prudential study, "Veterans’ Employment Challenges: Perceptions and experiences of transitioning from military to civilian life," 69 percent of returning service members say finding a job is their greatest challenge, while 9 in 10 say they have the skills needed to land their ideal job. "That's why at Prudential we created an Office of Veterans Initiatives to coordinate our efforts to create sustainable training, employment and professional development services for active and transitioning military service members and their spouses," says Sevola.

Veterans offer a unique set of skills such as problem solving, leadership, ethics and a drive for results, which they have developed and honed during their years in the military. Yet unemployment rates, while improving, underscore the difficulties returning veterans face translating these skills to the civilian sector. Businesses can help by providing hiring managers with the tools and education needed to better understand the value proposition of veterans in the workforce and the benefit of developing and fostering veteran employee communities within an organization.
