Small businesses are like the “little engine that could.” They drive the U.S. economy and provide the majority of jobs to American workers. Yet small companies have struggled with increasing health care expenses: According to the National Small Business Association, health insurance costs have nearly doubled for small employers since 2009. At the same time, the flagging economy has left many struggling to offer competitive benefits packages.
The 2014 Aflac WorkForces Report took a look at the issues facing small businesses and found that decision-makers recognize the importance of strong benefits to retaining and acquiring top employees. In fact, fewer small businesses predicted they would reduce benefits in 2014. That’s a good thing, because benefits trump salary for the majority of small-company employees: 58 percent say they are likely to accept a job with slightly lower compensation but better benefits.
