Rockwell Collins receives 2014 Career and Technology Education Award from the Maryland State Department of Education
Award recognizes course created through partnership with Anne Arundel Community College as part of the National STEM Consortium
ANNAPOLIS, Md. (April 24, 2014) – Rockwell Collins, through its recent acquisition of ARINC, announced that its Annapolis, Md facility has been selected to receive the 2014 Career and Technology Education (CTE) Outstanding Postsecondary Business Partnership Award of Excellence from the Maryland State Department of Education.
The award recognizes the partnership originally established between ARINC in Annapolis, now part of Rockwell Collins, and Anne Arundel Community College (AACC) for its work in creating the Science Technology Engineering and Math (STEM) Readiness course as part of The National STEM Consortium (NSC). The NSC is an alliance of community colleges that developed five separate one-year certificate programs to help retrain displaced workers by focusing on high-demand skills. The certificate programs include compositescyber technologyelectric vehicle technology, environmental technology and mechatronics.
“This class is an outstanding example of a business partnering with the educational community to improve the skill set of our graduates,” said Katharine M. Oliver, assistant state superintendent, Division of College and Career Readiness, Maryland State Department of Education. “Through this course, students are learning technical skills they need not only for today’s jobs, but for the future. We are pleased to honor Rockwell Collins in Annapolis for its contribution to the educational community.”
The course is also part of The Open Learning Initiative (OLI), a grant-funded group atCarnegie Mellon University, offering innovative online courses to anyone who wants to learn or teach. The STEM Readiness course, which teaches math, critical thinking and work place communications, and professional skills, is required for all students, regardless of which certification is pursued. As part of the OLI, in addition to being utilized by students in the STEM Consortium Program, the course is available athttp://oli.cmu.edu/ to others wishing to access the content. 
“As a leader in data and voice communications for the aviation industry, we know firsthand the value of STEM and other programs that support critical thinking skills,” said Jeff Standerski, senior vice president, Information Management Services.  “This award demonstrates the positive results that can happen when business organizations take an interest in—and work closely with—educational institutions. We are excited that this class has had such a positive impact on so many.”
“The partnership between the National STEM Consortium (NSC) and Rockwell Collins has resulted in the development of innovative, realistic and contextualized workplace activities that are designed to allow students to practice essential workplace skills during their training,” said Susan Gallagher, NSC project director. “The company’s contributions to the cyber curriculum and the STEM Readiness course ensure that the programs are not only responsive to the needs of business, but also reflect workplace realities and provide students with the knowledge and skills necessary to meet employer demands.”
The award presentation was held on April 22, 2014, at the Sheraton Baltimore City Center Hotel in downtown Baltimore.
