Cisco Applauds Canadian Federal Budget Support for Greater Use of Telepresence Technology

Toronto, ON  – March 30, 2012 – As a company focused on positively impacting innovation and productivity, Cisco Canada applauds the Government of Canada for leading by example in utilizing technology to increase productivity.
"This budget demonstrates that the Government of Canada is continuing to embrace new technologies such as telepresence, and is leading the world in recognizing the impact technology can have on improving productivity," said Nitin Kawale, president, Cisco Canada. "I commend Minister Flaherty and Prime Minister Harper for continuing to show leadership in modernizing public service delivery."
In the budget document, the Government states it "will explore ways to increase its productivity by using telepresence and other remote conferencing technologies more extensively. Telepresence technology is similar to videoconferencing; however, it enables participants to see life-size, full-motion video with high-quality sound. The Government will develop a strategy to expand the use of telepresence technology and other remote meeting solutions. Investments in this technology will be financed by reductions in travel expenses."
Many public and private sector organizations use TelePresence to realize meaningful productivity gains and drive process change. "The Government of Canada and Minister Flaherty are on the right track with this budget initiative," added Kawale.

Ryan Stokes Budget Battle with New 'Blueprint'

Ryan stokes budget battle with new ‘blueprint’
By Peter Schroeder

A fresh budget proposal this week from House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) will usher in another round of fighting over the federal pocketbook.

Ryan is expected to announce his “Blueprint for American Renewal” on Tuesday at the American Enterprise Institute. His budget panel is expected to follow that up with a markup of the package Wednesday.

The Republican proposal will be met with a barrage of Democratic attacks if, as expected, it sets a lower spending cap than agreed to as part of the summer’s debt-limit deal. House GOP leaders are selling a $1.028 trillion spending cap to their members, down from the $1.047 trillion deal hammered out last summer. Some conservatives are pushing for even stricter limits.

In the Senate, lawmakers will continue work on a bill aimed at making it easier for startup companies to raise capital. But some Democrats have aired concerns that the bill does that by rolling back key investor protections, and are pushing to strengthen that aspect of the bill before advancing it.

Elsewhere on Capitol Hill, the European debt crisis will be a hot topic, just days after the International Monetary Fund signed off on its $37 billion contribution to a broad bailout package for Greece. On Tuesday, Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner will visit the House Financial Services Committee to discuss the state of international finance, and the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee is devoting a Wednesday morning hearing to Europe’s debt woes.

Accenture Upgrades Technology to Help Massachusetts Manage $45 billion Annual Budget

Commonwealth Raises Standards for State Budgeting and Forecasting

BOSTON, Mass.; March 8, 2012 –At a time when state governments face unprecedented challenges in meeting the needs of their citizens, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts has implemented a new budget system and adopted standards that enhance the state’s ability to project and allocate financial resources throughout the fiscal year.

Accenture (NYSE:ACN) worked with the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Executive Office for Administration and Finance (ANF) to complete the Commonwealth’s annual budget process using the new “Massachusetts Budget Application.”

The system enhances the state’s ability to provide a uniform, consistent and comprehensive budget process for the state’s 156 agencies by creating a common approach to project budget needs and reviewing and approving budget proposals. A detailed workforce-planning capability now enables agencies to project spending by individual positions and full-time employee staffing levels.

The new system also provides administration officials with a powerful tool that creates the foundation for more informed decisions about allocations to support programs and services while providing increased visibility on how agencies match financial and personnel resources to critical services and needs.

“Our goal was to build a foundation for better analysis and continual enhancements of the state’s performance, leveraging information to improve outcomes and fulfill missions of each state agency as well as the Commonwealth’s fiscal responsibilities to its citizens,” said Matthew Gorzkowicz, Massachusetts undersecretary for Administration and Finance.

Additional features and benefits of the new system include:
  • Ability to do detailed workforce planning and position-based budgeting
  • All funds (Operating, Federal, Trust) budgeting and reporting capabilities
  • Visibility into the budget development, review and approval process
  • Detailed point-in-time capabilities that reconcile budgeted costs to actual expenditures
  • Increased accuracy to project cash flow to better identify spending patterns

“State governments face new fiscal constraints and increased pressure to control costs,” said Pallavi Verma, Accenture senior executive. “Massachusetts has demonstrated leading-edge fiscal management and a commitment to its citizens.”

Accenture will continue working with the Commonwealth on other budget-related projects, including consolidating the state’s budget technology platform, implementing a planning application for capital budgets, creating budget management dashboards for state executives and the production of the governor’s budget.
