Internet Archive Amasses All TV News Since 2009

By BILL CARTER

Inspired by a pillar of antiquity, the Library of Alexandria, Brewster Kahle has a grand vision for the Internet Archive, the giant aggregator and digitizer of data, which he founded and leads.

“We want to collect all the books, music and video that has ever been produced by humans,” Mr. Kahle said.

As of Tuesday, the archive’s online collection will include every morsel of news produced in the last three years by 20 different channels, encompassing more than 1,000 news series that have generated more than 350,000 separate programs devoted to news.

The latest ambitious effort by the archive, which has already digitized millions of books and tried to collect everything published on every Web page for the last 15 years (that adds up to more than 150 billion Web pages), is intended not only for researchers, Mr. Kahle said, but also for average citizens who make up some of the site’s estimated two million visitors each day.  “The focus is to help the American voter to better be able to examine candidates and issues,” Mr. Kahle said. “If you want to know exactly what Mitt Romney said about health care in 2009, you’ll be able to find it.”

Of course, if you want to discredit or satirize a politician based on a clip showing some reversal of a position, that will be made easier as well. Or, as Mr. Kahle put it, “Let a thousand Jon Stewarts bloom.”

Many conventional news outlets will be available, including CNN, Fox News, NBC News, PBS, and every purveyor of eyewitness news on local television stations. And Mr. Stewart’s program, “The Daily Show” is one of those 1,000 series that is part of the new news archive.

Supporting Quotes:
Dragica Pilipovic Chaffey, CEO, Serbia Broadband, commented:
“Next-generation television services are a major focus as we look to build our growing subscriber base, both in Serbia and internationally. When we were looking for a technology partner, Cisco’s track record of working with partners to successfully launch video services in multiple markets, combined with the company’s commitment to an open-standards software architecture, made it the obvious choice. I am confident that this solution will allow SBB-Telemach Group to deliver world-class television services.”
Edwin Paalvast, senior vice president, Service Provider Group, Europe, Middle East, Africa and Russia, Cisco, commented:
“Consumers are increasingly expecting cable operators to deliver more than just traditional television services. The growth of online video and changing viewer behaviours mean that advanced services such as intelligent user interfaces, on-demand content and social media integration are becoming ever more important. The Cisco Videoscape platform will help SBB-Telemach Group bring innovation to television services faster and more cost-effectively, which will benefit consumers in Serbia and across South East Europe.”

IBM Cloud to Deliver New Home Entertainment Services for Philips Smart TVs

Press release:

IBM Cloud to Deliver New Home Entertainment Services for Philips Smart TVs

IBM Launches Cloud Platform for the Consumer Electronics Industry
BERLIN - 31 Aug 2012: IBM (NYSE: IBM) today unveiled a new cloud platform for consumer electronics firms and announced it will power the Philips Smart TV platform for Internet services, which will deliver greater interactive services to millions of TV viewers in more than 30 countries in Europe, as well as Brazil and Argentina.
Through their broadband connections, smart TVs provide consumers with innovative, on-demand access to an unlimited array of entertainment options throughout the Internet. In addition to standard, linear TV, they provide two-way interaction and personalized content, enabling new “intelligent” consumer services.
Today’s announcement at the IFA consumer electronics event in Berlin provides IBM cloud services on a pay-per-use basis to TP Vision, an Amsterdam-based joint venture between Philips and TV manufacturer TPV responsible for the development of Philips Smart TV.
TP Vision needed a cloud computing environment resilient enough to support unexpected service demands at any given time when millions of TV units access a variety of services on its network.
“IBM’s cloud platform allows us to place the service and application intelligence into the cloud, and reduces the complexity of managing software in the TVs for our consumers,” said Albert Mombarg, head of Philips Smart TV at TP Vision. “This provides an economic, more flexible way to create new services for our viewers. By engaging with IBM on a cost-per-device basis, we obtain a new business model with predictable costs, and great flexibility to expand our services and grow our user base. We expect it to transform the way we offer new services and drive ongoing business innovation.”
The new IBM cloud platform opens up paths to new revenue. The data stored within the cloud can provide new insights about consumer needs and behavior for the media and entertainment industry, such as recommending TV shows based on past selections. Service providers, chief marketing officers and advertisers can use Big Data analytics to deliver more personalized entertainment options and targeted advertisements. Marketers can generate collective consumer knowledge derived from the aggregation of data from a population of homes, in addition to an individual TV.
“As the Internet and smart devices continue to infiltrate home entertainment, today’s consumer electronics manufacturers are looking to deliver new interactive entertainment services,” said Bruce Anderson, general manager of IBM’s global electronics industry. “Televisions are about to become the next open application platform, similar to the application platforms on mobile devices.  Organizations are turning to the IBM cloud as the channel for their innovation.”
IBM Launches IBM SmartCloud Service Delivery
Today IBM unveils a cloud-based platform managed by IBM global cloud data centers, for subscriber and device management, service life-cycle management and more.  IBM’s new service delivery platform, called the IBM SmartCloud Service Delivery for Electronics, provides consistent management of millions of different connected consumer devices, provisions services, interfaces with third parties, and acts as a collector of customer intelligence. It bundles services, software, hardware, network and third-party services in a single integrated service, for an all-in price, with per active user pricing, making smarter TV services more cost effective for manufacturers and consumers.
Examples of live solutions demonstrated at IFA include the Philips Smart TV and service portal, and a smart home proof-of-concept, with home management and monitoring, as well as home energy management.

Kimmel Move May Seal Fate of ‘Nightline’

By BILL CARTER

Jimmy Kimmel’s ascent to the main stage of late-night television — the hour directly after the 11 p.m. local news — was greeted last week with widespread congratulations for a performer who had paid his dues and for a network willing to shake up the late-night status quo and bet on a comedic challenger to David Letterman and Jay Leno.

But there was little outcry over the corresponding demotion of “Nightline,” the 32-year-old institution of ABC News that is being relegated to the 12:35 a.m. slot to make room for “Jimmy Kimmel Live,” nor any public denunciations from the hierarchy of ABC News.

Instead, the network’s appraisal that it simply can make more money with Mr. Kimmel — the president of the Disney/ABC Television Group, Anne Sweeney, evaluated the move in terms of an advantage in advertising sales — was accepted as both reasonable and sensible.

Several longtime late-night producers praised Mr. Kimmel’s talents, predicting he would find success, even competing against the entrenched titans of that hour, Mr. Letterman on CBS and Mr. Leno on NBC.

Lloyd Braun, a former ABC entertainment chief who selected Mr. Kimmel for the network 10 years ago, said: “Jimmy is young. He could have 10 or 20 years in late night — and he’s a brand. We’re going to live in a world where brands are going to mean everything.”

Tom Bettag, the longtime “Nightline” executive producer who now works with the former “Nightline” anchor Ted Koppel on “Rock Center” on NBC, expressed deep regret that his old show was being elbowed out of its perennial spot.

But, he said, “it had lost some of that indispensable quality” it had when first conceived by former ABC News president, Roone Arledge.

Political Conventions Can Learn From Reality Shows - Media Equation

By DAVID CARR

If the political conventions were managed like a typical television show that was losing audience, think of the meetings that would be held during the run-up.

TV Boss: “The cast is uninspired, the plots are unbearably boring and if I see one more man-on-the-street interview with someone covered in buttons wearing a funny hat, I’m going to snap.”

The tribal rituals of conventions — “Mr. Chairman, the people of the great state of Iowa, home of the finest hybrid seed corn ... ” — have their charms, but don’t seem relevant given that we’ve already been immersed like so many tea bags in a permanent presidential campaign through dozens of debates and thousands of dispatches on the Web and on cable television.

Both parties know they have a problem on their hands — they are making a television show that networks are reluctant to broadcast and viewers are reluctant to watch — and they have responded in different ways. The Democrats have gone leaner, cutting the number of days from four to three, and for a second consecutive cycle are leaving the convention hall for the final day by moving the president’s speech to a stadium.

Meanwhile, the Republicans are shining up the programming side of the equation for an event that was scheduled to start on Monday, but has been pruned by a day by Mother Nature and Tropical Storm Isaac. The G.O.P. has built a richly appointed $2.5 million stage and hired a former news producer from NBC to make sure things proceed in a television-friendly fashion.

But everyone knows that what is under way is not a news event so much as reality television. The conventions feature all the preening of the Westminster Dog Show, but none of the drama or actual competition. No matter how shiny the production, it will not satisfy a growing public need for verisimilitude and authenticity.

“A big part of the pleasure of reality TV, the bulk of television programming these days, is in the teasing out of what is real and what is not,” said Susan Murray, a professor of media, culture and communications at New York University. “Live political debates can give us these real moments, but the conventions do not. They’re so tightly scripted and rehearsed that there is little room for that kind of pleasure for a viewer.”

Huffington Post Begins an Online TV Channel

By BRIAN STELTER

The Huffington Post on Monday began what it hopes will be a never-ending news talk show on the Internet, HuffPost Live.

The online channel is one of the most ambitious attempts yet to rethink what television should look and feel like when streamed over the Internet. Accordingly, a chat box took up the same amount of space as the live video, and a bright red button labeled "join this segment" let viewers sign up to participate through their own webcams.

The segments themselves, at least initially, did not stray much from a TV script. The first hour, from 10 to 11 a.m. Eastern time, was dominated by talk about the presidential race and about the actress Jennifer Aniston's engagement to the actor Justin Theroux. But the people talking were a mixture of paid hosts and unpaid viewers at home. "Continue commenting!" a host encouraged chatters at the end of the first hour. "We love it, love it, love it."

The channel will have 12 hours of programming on weekdays, and the effort reflects a serious push within the media industry to produce the kind of online video advertisers are requesting. Cadillac and Verizon are the two advertisers The Huffington Post calls "founding partners" of the network.

"Now that almost everyone in the country is watching online video, it just makes sense that some people would want live programming, too," said Mike Vorhaus, a digital media analyst who heads Magid Advisors. "Of course, with the Web, it will be recorded and replayed forever."

MundoFox, New Spanish-Language Network, to Make Debut

By TANZINA VEGA

LOS ANGELES — The correspondents were on camera and on location in Mexico City, Washington and Los Angeles. Rolando Nichols, the lead anchor, listened intently to the microphone in his ear as he stood in front of the bright red walls of the news studio.

But the news would have to wait: engineers and producers in the control room were having trouble with the sound coming from one of the microphones.

Fortunately, this was not a live news broadcast. It was a test run for MundoFox, the newest Spanish-language network in the United States.

On Monday, the network — a partnership between Fox International Channels, owned by the News Corporation, and RCN Television in Colombia — will make its official debut in 50 cities in the United States, including Chicago, Houston, Los Angeles, Miami and New York.

MundoFox will be entering a market long dominated by Univision and the smaller Telemundo as it tries to gain the attention of the millions of Latinos in the United States who watch Spanish-language programming. The effort is estimated to cost $50 million.

By the end of the year, network executives say they expect to be in 60 cities, reaching nearly 80 percent of Latino audiences in the United States. It is the first time RCN will be part owner of a broadcast network in the United States.
