UnitedHealthcare Donates 250 Laptop Computers to Community Organizations in Georgia

ATLANTA (Jan. 21, 2015) —
UnitedHealthcare will donate 250 computers to local organizations to increase computer and Internet access in underserved communities.
UnitedHealthcare delivered refurbished laptops to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Atlanta and the Boys & Girls Club of Hall County – Gainesville, as well as to 12 other community- and faith-based organizations in the Marietta/Cobb, Savannah, Albany, Macon and Atlanta areas.
Many community partners have expressed the need to connect via technology with the people they serve. In response, UnitedHealthcare has created computer labs to serve vulnerable populations, such as inner city youth, the elderly and people with disabilities.
“We are excited and grateful for this donation of laptops from UnitedHealthcare,” said Julio Carrillo, executive vice president & COO of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Atlanta, which provides one-to-one support for vulnerable children in the community. “These computers will give children the opportunity to take online classes, conduct educational research and enable them to better compete in an increasingly computer-savvy world.”
The donated computers help people in the community access health information, assistance programs and other online resources. UnitedHealthcare has donated 2,600 computers in 18 states since the program began in 2012.
“Being able to offer these new services to underserved members of our community will go a long way toward closing the technology gap that some of our most vulnerable residents face,” said Ken Huffman, unit director of Boys & Girls Club of Hall County – Gainesville, an organization that inspires and enables young people to realize their full potential as productive, responsible and caring citizens. “Computer access to health, education and other online information is key to helping young people connect with the services they need to achieve academic success, especially with high school graduation being a top priority for Club members.”
“The Community Computers program was designed to increase computer and Internet access in neighborhoods where access to these tools may be limited,” said Jocelyn Chisholm Carter of UnitedHealthcare. “We are grateful for the opportunity to help people in our communities gain access to critical information and resources through these laptops.”
