On Dec. 3, Monsanto Chief Technology Officer Robb Fraley joined Alison Van Eenennaam, Charles Benbrook and Margaret Mellon, for the Intelligence Squared™ Debates in New York City. The four debated the motion, "Genetically Modify Food."
More than 450 people attended in person, and the event was streamed online. The format is based on Oxford-style debates, and in-person audience members vote pre- and post-debate.
Prior to the show, 32 percent of the audience was for the Genetically Modify motion. After the debate, 60 percent was in favor.
"While the discussion was at times lively, it was open, respectful and focused on issues we all care about: helping our planet manage climate change, food security, water security and other challenges we all face together," said Fraley. "Even though we had different points of view, we found common ground that allowed us to have a constructive dialogue and really talk about these topics.”
