Duke Energy Florida has seen an increase in utility payment scams in Pinellas County. The latest targets appear to be primarily small businesses.

Several business owners have reported receiving unsolicited calls from someone who falsely claims to be a Duke Energy representative. The thief tells the customer his or her account is past due and service will be disconnected if a large payment isn’t made – usually within less than an hour.
