Gilead Announces Amended Agreements With Janssen to Develop and Commercialize Tenofovir Alafenamide-Based Single Tablet Regimens for HIV Treatment

From Gilead Sciences:

Gilead Announces Amended Agreements With Janssen to Develop and Commercialize Tenofovir Alafenamide-Based Single Tablet Regimens for HIV Treatment

FOSTER CITY, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 29, 2014-- Gilead Sciences, Inc. (Nasdaq:GILD) today announced an expansion to its agreement with Janssen R&D Ireland for the development and commercialization of a new once-daily single tablet regimen containing Gilead’s tenofovir alafenamide (TAF) and emtricitabine, and Janssen’s rilpivirine. The original agreement was established in 2009 for the development and commercialization of Complera®, marketed as Eviplera® in the European Union, which combines tenofovir disoproxil fumarate, emtricitabine and rilpivirine in a once-daily tablet. Gilead will initiate Phase 3 studies of emtricitabine/rilpivirine/TAF in the coming months. Pending the product’s approval, Gilead will be responsible for the manufacturing, registration, distribution and commercialization of the regimen in most countries, while Janssen will distribute in approximately 17 markets.
TAF is a novel nucleotide reverse transcriptase inhibitor that has demonstrated high antiviral efficacy at a dose 10 times lower than Gilead’s Viread® (tenofovir disoproxil fumarate), as well as an improved renal and bone safety profile.
“We believe that TAF’s efficacy and safety advantages may make it a strong backbone of new fixed-dose combinations and single tablet regimens,” said Norbert Bischofberger, PhD, Executive Vice President, Research and Development and Chief Scientific Officer, Gilead Sciences. “Gilead is pleased to continue its collaboration with Janssen to bring improved treatment options to patients living with HIV.”
Gilead and Janssen also have amended a licensing agreement for the development and commercialization of a once-daily single tablet regimen for HIV containing Gilead’s TAF, emtricitabine and cobicistat, and Janssen’s darunavir. Under the amended agreement, Janssen will be responsible for further development of the regimen and, subject to regulatory approval, the manufacturing, registration, distribution and commercialization of the product worldwide.
Separate to the Janssen agreements, Gilead is advancing its own TAF-based single tablet regimen containing elvitegravir, cobicistat, emtricitabine and TAF. The company announced on November 6, 2014, it filed for regulatory approval in the United States.
TAF and TAF-based regimens are investigational products in the United States and have not yet been determined safe or efficacious in humans.
About Gilead Sciences
Gilead Sciences is a biopharmaceutical company that discovers, develops and commercializes innovative therapeutics in areas of unmet medical need. The company’s mission is to advance the care of patients suffering from life-threatening diseases. Gilead has operations in more than 30 countries worldwide, with headquarters in Foster City, California.
Forward-Looking Statement
This press release includes forward-looking statements within the meaning of the Private Securities Litigation Reform Act of 1995 that are subject to risks, uncertainties and other factors, including risks related to whether ongoing clinical trials of TAF-based combinations will be successful and Gilead’s ability to coformulate new single tablet regimens containing TAF, emtricitabine and rilpivirine, and TAF, emtricitabine, cobicistat and darunavir. In addition, Gilead and Janssen may make a strategic decision to discontinue development of the TAF combination products if, for example, the market for the products fails to materialize as expected. As a result, the agreements may terminate. Further, regulatory authorities may not approve TAF-based regimens, and marketing approvals, if granted, may have significant limitations on their use. As a result, TAF combination products may never be successfully commercialized. These risks, uncertainties and other factors could cause actual results to differ materially from those referred to in the forward-looking statements. The reader is cautioned not to rely on these forward-looking statements. These and other risks are described in detail in Gilead’s Quarterly Report on Form 10-Q for the quarter ended September 30, 2014, as filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. All forward-looking statements are based on information currently available to Gilead, and Gilead assumes no obligation to update any such forward-looking statements.

World Accessibility in Rural America

From USDA:

USDA Rural Development and NCTC break ground on a new high speed broadband project serving rural Tennessee and Kentucky.
USDA Rural Development and NCTC break ground on a new high speed broadband project serving rural Tennessee and Kentucky.
Access to the world via internet and mobile phone services is at the fingertips of most Americans, but this is not the reality for residents of many rural communities across the Nation.
In October 2014, Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack announced $190.5 million in grants and loans to make broadband and other advanced communications infrastructure improvements in rural areas.
In December 2014, I visited with groups of people whose families and businesses will benefit from a $1,771,035 USDA Rural Development Community Connect Broadband Grant awarded to North Central Telephone Cooperative (NCTC) in Lafayette, Tennessee.
This rural area bordering the Tennessee/Kentucky state line has seen their share of businesses closing and families moving “closer to town.”  Many of the longtime residents understand why their children and grandchildren feel isolated and have decided to move away, but they, along with community and business leaders, hope the improvements that NCTC is making with the help of Rural Development funds will turn the tide and draw businesses and people back into the area.
Upon completion, NCTC service area residents will have access to internet speeds ranging from 5 Megabits per second (Mbps) to a full 1 Gigabit per second (Gbps). This means businesses will be able to capitalize off of e-commerce business strategies and offer teleworking options to their employees; community members will have more efficient and reliable access to commercial and emergency services.
I was reminded by a young father that shared how much he enjoyed raising his family on the same road as his parents, grandparents, siblings, aunts, and uncles while also describing the challenge of not being able to work at home because he did not have access to high-speed internet service, that building a stronger rural America is not only vital to our nation economically, but as an underpinning to strong families.
Breaking ground on this project felt more like USDA Rural Development and NCTC were breaking antiquated barriers that have prevented America’s rural businesses, services and families from accessing the world.
USDA Rural Development’s Community Connect Grant Program is designed for communities like Lafayette. These grants enable access to broadband technology that will sustain existing and attract new businesses to rural communities. Broadband makes the world accessible even in rural America.
If your rural community needs financial assistance to make broadband access a reality, USDA Rural Development is accepting applications* from state or town governments, cooperatives, incorporated organizations, Indian Tribes and Tribal Organizations for Community Connect Grants.
Together let’s break down the barriers and make the world accessible. For more information contact your local USDA Rural Development team.

4 Ways to Make the Most of Your Retail Salespeople

I’ve been reading tons of articles about the future of shopping, the growth of mobile in the shopping experience and how major retailers are taking advantage of technology to transform their stores. Not only is online shopping the new normal, but even in-store, many shoppers prefer to get product info from their phones (PDF) rather than a live salesperson.
It’s enough to make a retailer worry that shopping in a physical store with help from a sales clerk is becoming as obsolete as using a typewriter.

How Employer-Sponsored Health Insurance Differs at Big and Small Businesses

Many people are aware that big companies are much more likely than small businesses to offer employer-sponsored health insurance to their employees. TheMedical Expenditure Panel Survey (MEPS), an annual effort to query nearly 40,000 establishments, conducted by the Federal Government’s Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality shows that only 34.8 percent of private sector establishments with fewer than 50 employees provided workers with health care coverage in 2013, as compared with 95.7 percent of those with 50 or more workers.
Bigger companies are also more likely than smaller ones to offer health care coverage to retirees. The 2013 MEPS reveals that only 1.3 percent of business locations with fewer than 50 workers offered health insurance to retirees under the age of 65, and only 2.3 percent offered it to older retirees. By contrast, 23.5 percent of private sector establishments with 50 or more workers provided health insurance to retirees under the age of 65, and 19.5 percent offered it to retirees over 65.

If you have a Christmas tree in your home right now, you’re probably planning to put it out on your curb with the rest or your garbage in a week or two. But in the future, you might be able to give your old tree a new life as something else.
French company DoYouGreen has come up with a way to turn pine trimmings into a soft fabric, perfect for garments like lingerie. The fabric is smooth, thin and naturally anti-bacterial. In addition, it requires no chemical processing to go from wood to fabric. So it’s even more of an environmentally friendly process than other wood-based fabric materials like bamboo.

When Should You Use Online Surveys (and When Not)?

Online surveys can be both overused and underused. On the one hand, many don’t take the opportunity to gather feedback when the timing would be best. On the other hand, people who are asked to respond to surveys too often suffer survey fatigue and refuse to participate in yet one more survey. However, when the timing and method is right, respondents are happy to participate and you’re able to get the responses you need to help make decisions. So, when are the best times to send out a survey?

Over the past few years, it seems like people’s holiday light displays have gotten more and more intricate. People have covered their entire homes in twinkle lights, set their displays to music, and racked up huge electric bills in the process. But this year, there’s a light display that puts all those others to shame.
YouTuber Jeff Maxey posted the videos below earlier this month. They show an overhead view of a neighborhood in Yucaipa, California. The entire neighborhood banded together to put on a Christmas light show set to music.

The video shows the band Walk Off the Earth in holiday attire performing the song “Little Drummer Boy.” But along with the band, three dogs appear to be playing their own instruments: a keyboard, a cello and drums.

ATK and NASA Announce Commercial Space Capabilities Partnership

Dec 23, 2014

Arlington, Va. – ATK (NYSE: ATK) and NASA have announced an agreement to support near-term core technologies for space logistics, hosted payloads, and space transportation.

The Space Act Agreement (SAA) allows ATK’s Space Systems division and NASA to collaborate on technologies and new product development that meet the needs of the emerging satellite transport and space logistics industry. The SAA is an unfunded partnership through NASA’s Collaborations for Commercial Space Capabilities Office at the agency’s Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas.

“The SAA agreement allows ATK and NASA to develop solutions that support NASA’s 2014 Strategic Plan to advance commercial space efforts in use of space logistics and space vehicle transport technologies,” said Tom Wilson, vice president and general manager of ATK’s Space Systems division. “By sharing these innovative commercial space capabilities, we will strengthen our existing partnership with NASA and expand the space logistics market for government and commercial missions.”

The agreement defines principal milestones on ATK’s scheduled commercial activities and allows NASA to offer assistance and feedback on key developments. By leveraging NASA expertise, ATK will continue to enhance its innovative in-orbit programs for government and commercial space customers.
