Clinical Analytics Platform from Optum Supports Accountable Care Initiatives at Mercy and HealthEast Care System
- Clinical analytics powered by Humedica delivers patient and population health insights to improve treatment outcomes, care coordination and quality
ST. LOUIS and MINNEAPOLIS (Oct. 21, 2013) —
Advanced clinical analytics technologies from Optum are supporting population health management and accountable care strategies at Mercy, the nation's sixth-largest Catholic health care system, and HealthEast Care System, the largest locally owned health care organization in the Minneapolis-St. Paul east metro area.
HealthEast, which is composed of four hospitals and 1,500 physicians, is using the analytics platform powered by Humedica to analyze data from a variety of clinical and administrative sources to better understand and manage treatment for patients with chronic conditions, and to advance performance for its newly formed accountable care organization. HealthEast began using Humedica analytics to identify gaps in care, determine which patients are at greatest risk of re-hospitalization or of developing chronic conditions and create strategies for managing or coordinating care for high-utilizers.
Dr. Brian Patty, HealthEast vice president and chief medical informatics officer said, "We have been able to understand our patient populations better than we ever could before. We knew the value of our electronic health record data, but until now, we had not been able to easily extract, analyze and put this data to use for the health of our patients. Our ability to assess gaps in care and predict risk has improved dramatically with Humedica's analytics platform."
At Mercy, Humedica's clinical analytics platform powers the health care system's accountable care initiatives. Mercy developed a population health governance structure to introduce the analytics tools to its entire organization. Mercy, which is composed of 32 hospitals and 1,700 integrated physicians, serves more than 3 million patients annually in four states.
Marc Gunter, M.D., clinical vice president at Mercy, said, "We are extremely pleased by how smoothly the implementation went. Humedica's analytics platform is a scalable, big data solution. We were able to access all our patient records from our EMR on the implementation date, and we have already seen the benefits of being able to proactively analyze our patient populations for targeted interventions."
Mary Lantin, vice president of client services at Humedica, said "Mercy and HealthEast are helping transform health care to a value-based model. Both organizations assembled teams that understand the value of analytics and can drive the changes necessary to improve their patients' health and better deploy their clinical resources."
