The Rugby Football Union Boosts the Fan Experience with IBM Analytics and Big Data
IBM Press Release:
The Rugby Football Union Boosts the Fan Experience with IBM Analytics and Big Data
Armonk, N.Y. - 31 Jan 2013: The Rugby Football Union (RFU) and IBM (NYSE: IBM) today announced a strategic five year agreement. As Official Analytics Partner for the RFU, IBM will implement a leading analytics solution to provide fans with real-time insights into the game, including information about individual performance by players – the IBM TryTracker.
In a first for rugby, IBM’s Predictive Analytics software will analyse historic and current rugby data provided by Opta, the world’s leading sports data provider, to provide valuable in-game stats. It will give viewers access to insights that will heighten their understanding of what to watch for in each game and explain what needs to be done to increase the likelihood of a team win against specific opponents.
The IBM TryTracker will include the ‘Keys to the Game’, to provide play-by-play insights during the game, and predict three crucial areas of performance specific to each team ahead of match day. For example, the system may predict that if a side hits their target in these aspects of their game then they are more likely to increase their chances of victory, for example the proportion of scrums won or rate of successful kicks. The data collected and provided by Opta for all England internationals is analysed by IBM, before being hosted on RFU.com.
In addition, the platform will feature a new way to represent ‘Momentum’, which depicts visual graphics of the match as it unfolds – and identifies key moments, decisions and turning points based on every facet of the game. It will also determine the match’s ‘Key Influencers’ by analysing every action of every player to reveal which three players are having the biggest positive impact on their team’s overal performance. Results are based on position specific historical data, and will show the average performance of the player's teammates.
As well as providing the analytics for IBM TryTracker, the agreement also includes the implementation of a Customer Relationship Management (CRM) transformational plan for the RFU. Using IBM Analytics will allow the RFU to better understand information on rugby fans, their needs and preferences, to enable the organisation to communicate with supporters and participants in a more personalised way.
Sophie Goldschmidt, Chief Commercial Officer, RFU: “We’re delighted to be working with a company of IBM’s calibre. This important new long-term agreement will enable the RFU to give fans even more insight and understanding into what’s happening on the pitch and why, as well as ensuring we remain at the forefront of new technology to enrich the overall fan experience. Our plans also involve utilising IBM’s expertise to further benefit the grassroots game and enhance performance at the elite level.”
"In sport and business, data is a game changer, “said Martin Guillaume, Media and Sports Leader for IBM Global Business Services UK and Ireland. “IBM is powering new consumer experiences with advanced real -time analytics. By doing this, we offer a new way to enjoy the game, by uncovering insights that matter, enhancing the fan experience and providing vital feedback to players and stakeholders."
This technology builds on what is already in use in well known global tennis tournaments such as Wimbledon, The Australian Open and The US Open. IBM is tapping the power of predictive analytics to help deliver insights into everything touching performance, sports injuries, key plays and more. By delivering these insights directly to fans, IBM is driving a smarter sporting experience, giving millions of rugby fans around the world the tools to a more enjoyable game.
The world of sports, and many sporting teams alike, are finding new ways to uncover hidden insights from Big Data to gain a competitive edge. Analytics continues to change how sport is being viewed and played, ensuring that fans have a complete interactive experience so they do not miss a moment.
The IBM TryTracker can be accessed by all mobile devices and tablets. The three Keys to the Game will be released every Thursday ahead of the weekend match day during the RBS 6 Nations tournament taking place from February 2 to March 16 2013, in which England, Wales, Scotland, Ireland, France and Italy will participate. The new platform is available at www.rfu.com/ibmtrytracker
This week’s Keys to the Game are:
England Keys
• Win more than 14 turnovers
• Get more than 5 linebreaks
• Achieve a successful goal kick percentage of more than 74%
Scotland Keys
• Achieve a tackle success rate greater than 95%
• Win more than 85% of own lineouts thrown
• Have more than 6 attempts at goal

IBM Announces Breakthrough with Combination of Security Intelligence and Big Data
IBM Press Release:
IBM Announces Breakthrough with Combination of Security Intelligence and Big Data
Data analytics helps organizations hunt for cyber attacks
ARMONK, N.Y. - 31 Jan 2013: Advanced attacks, widespread fraud and the pervasive use of social media, mobile and cloud computing are drastically altering the security landscape. As organizations increasingly need to manage Big Data, the way that corporate data needs to be protected is rapidly changing.
To aid in the detection of stealthy threats that can hide in the increasing mounds of data, IBM (NYSE: IBM) today announced IBM Security Intelligence with Big Data, combining leading security intelligence with big data analytics capabilities for both external cyber security threats and internal risk detection and prevention. IBM Security Intelligence with Big Data provides a comprehensive approach that allows security analysts to extend their analysis well beyond typical security data and to hunt for malicious cyber activity.
This new solution combines real-time correlation for continuous insight, custom analytics across massive structured data (such as security device alerts, operating system logs, DNS transactions and network flows) and unstructured data (such as emails, social media content, full packet information and business transactions), and forensic capabilities for evidence gathering. The combination helps organizations address the most vexing security challenges, including advanced persistent threats, fraud and insider threats.
The Depository Trust & Clearing Corporation (DTCC) is a leading financial services transaction clearing and settlement provider linking funds and carriers with their distribution networks and handling more than 3.6 million securities from 122 countries and territories valued at US$39.5 trillion. DTCC protects the financial markets and systems as a whole, using scale and expertise with advanced data analytics to perfect a more robust, unified infrastructure and promote solutions that systematically reduce risks, amplify operating efficiency and minimize cost for the member firms.
“As the sophistication and technological means of cyber-criminals increase, the financial industry and government need to move to a risk-based framework that incorporates the dynamic nature of the threat landscape,” said Mark Clancy, CISO, Managing Director, Technology Risk Management, DTCC. “We need to move from a world where we ‘farm’ security data and alerts with various prevention and detection tools to a situation where we actively ‘hunt’ for cyber-attackers in our networks. IBM’s Security Intelligence with Big Data solution gives us a practical way to gain visibility across our environment. We’re gaining real-time security awareness and meaningful insight into historical activity across years of diverse data.”
“Leveraging assets from across IBM, we are on a relentless push to expand the scope of our security intelligence capabilities for clients,” said Brendan Hannigan, General Manager of IBM’s Security Systems Division. “Our goal is to provide actionable insight into every bit of data, no matter where it resides across the network, and help clients learn from past activity to better secure the future.”

For forward-leaning organizations seeking advanced insight into security risks, IBM Security Intelligence with Big Data helps provide unprecedented powers of detection by combining deep security expertise with analytical insights on a massive scale. The solution helps organizations answer questions they could never ask before, by widening the scope of investigation to new data types. By analyzing structured, enriched security data alongside unstructured enterprise data, the IBM solution helps find malicious activity hidden deep in the masses of an organization’s data.
“Success today is too often defined as the absence of failure by the information security industry, instead of the demonstration of effectiveness. We do a lot of things in our profession that are hard to observe and hard to quantify. But any time you can measure the success or failure in a provable way, you can produce a much better outcome,” Mark Clancy, CISO, Managing Director, Technology Risk Management, DTCC said.
Integrated Security Intelligence and Big Data Analytics for Advanced Use Cases
Security use cases such as advanced persistent threat detection, fraud detection and insider threat analysis require a new class of solutions that can analyze more data, with more flexibility, and deliver more accurate results.
Made in IBM Labs, IBM Security Intelligence with Big Data unites the real-time security correlation and anomaly detection capabilities of the IBM QRadar Security Intelligence Platform with the custom analysis and exploration of vast business data provided by IBM InfoSphere BigInsights. The result is an integrated solution that combines intelligent monitoring and alerting with a workbench for threat and risk analysts to analyze and explore security and enterprise data in ways previously not possible.
Key capabilities include:
· Real-time correlation and anomaly detection of diverse security and network data
· High-speed querying of security intelligence data
· Flexible big data analytics across structured and unstructured data – including security, email, social media, business process, transactional, device, and other data

McDonald’s is working with IBM and its Business Partner, Knowledge Dimension, to transform the way its almost 200 restaurants and 8000 employees communicate and collaborate, thereby helping the company communicate and operate more effectively. McDonalds will begin transforming into a social enterprise to help geographically dispersed employees to communicate more effectively, sharing ideas that will allow them to deliver exceptional customer service.
Established in South Africa in November 1995, this market is considered one of the most successful markets for McDonald's international and initially opened 30 restaurants in just 23 months. The company has trained and employed almost 8000 South Africans at various levels, including franchisees, restaurant managers and crew.
“With our intended aggressive expansion plans – growing the number of restaurants by approximately 25 restaurants a year – improved communications is undoubtedly a business imperative,” says Greg Solomon, Managing Director for McDonald’s South Africa. “Equipping our employees with a social network to improve communication is critical in helping us fulfill our brand promise to customers for quality, service, cleanliness, and value.”
Challenged by having to communicate across this vastly dispersed organisation, the company sought a more effective way to reach every one of their crew, driving engagement and collaboration across the system.
The company’s “Engagement with our People” initiative kick started in 2011, intended to implement processes and tools between head office, Owner Operators (Franchisees), restaurant managers and crew (employees) to increase productivity, improve decision-making and achieve measurable business results has been hugely accelerated with this solution, giving management and staff a new way of interacting, collaborating and sharing information and expertise,” says Gary Swale, Director, Business Development, Knowledge Dimension.
McDonald’s SA is currently using IBM Connections and IBM Sametime instant messaging software to support internal communication and training requirements across their branch network.
The McDonald's crew (staff at restaurant level) will access the platform via an innovative, first-to-market in South Africa, mobile solution, supplemented by in-restaurant touch screen docking stations. This phase is scheduled for completion in the first quarter of 2013.
"McDonald's decision to embrace social business is pioneering and is reflective of the need to find smarter ways of working," says Alistair Rennie, general manager, social business, IBM. "McDonald's is taking a purposeful approach, using social technologies to engage employees, empower customers and drive organizational performance to secure a competitive advantage."
The agreement with McDonalds was signed in late 2012.
Raytheon achieves UK first with opening of new silicon carbide foundry
Raytheon Press Release:
Raytheon achieves UK first with opening of new silicon carbide foundry
GLENROTHES, Scotland, Jan. 31, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Raytheon today officially "opened for business" a new UK-leading silicon carbide manufacturing "foundry" facility, developed through several years' research into advanced manufacturing processes and materials science. The application of silicon carbide in electronic systems will place the UK in a leading position to develop next-generation, high-efficiency, smaller, low-weight power conversion products used in harsh environments across the automotive, aerospace, geothermal explorations, oil and gas, and clean energy sectors.
The Secretary of State for Scotland, the Rt. Hon. Michael Moore, who opened the foundry, said: "Today marks an important demonstration of what we can achieve in the UK through collaboration. The silicon carbide foundry is the first of its kind in the UK and represents the fusion of Raytheon's investment in UK manufacturing technology with university expertise, backed by UK Government funding from the Technology Strategy Board. This scientific and engineering endeavour born out of Raytheon Glenrothes has placed Scotland in a unique leadership position globally, enhanced by universities across the UK. The investment has created a team of world-class engineering specialists working in the production of silicon carbide devices and systems designed to operate at high temperatures, specialists who will continue to shape and influence advanced manufacturing processes and technologies."
Raytheon's ability to process silicon carbide utilizes high-temperature annealing and high-temperature/high-voltage ion implantation. The components provide unique properties in electronics: silicon carbide has the ability to operate at higher voltages and greater temperatures than pure silicon, and at a third of the weight and volume -- improving operational performance and reducing system operating costs. Raytheon is the first company to have successfully tested silicon carbide circuit devices at temperatures up to 400 degrees Celsius.
Bob Delorge, chief executive, Raytheon UK, said: "Raytheon's investment in the foundry coupled with support from the Technology Strategy Board exceeds £3.5 million to date. This places the company at the start of a journey to exploit new global markets for this cost-efficient material, which is estimated to bring significant new business to Raytheon in Scotland in the coming years. As well as employing industry-leading engineers and scientists, we have made substantial commitments to develop new engineering talent to maintain our technological edge in high temperature silicon carbide. We are supporting Ph.D. students and undergraduates, and we are giving apprentices and young graduates the opportunity to develop their careers in this new and exciting arena of next-generation semiconductor technology.
"What was previously unachievable is now possible with silicon carbide," he added, "as it allows for smaller and lighter electronics to operate in harsh environments, and addresses a real customer need for significant energy efficiency savings in the manufacture of power switching and rectifying components (AC/DC converters)."
Ian Watson, director of the aerospace, defense, security and space trade organization, ADS Scotland, said: "Today we see Raytheon UK gearing up for future success -- through investment, collaboration and diversification. At ADS, we know one of the main challenges industry faces as it looks to the future is continuing technological discovery to stay ahead of global competition. To address this challenge, it is vital that industry and academia work together to advance technology and fully explore commercial applications. Raytheon's new facility at Glenrothes is a brilliant example of this and shows the company to be confident not only about its own future, but also the future of the United Kingdom as a home to market leading innovation.
"This sector with companies such as Raytheon that operate in Scotland contributes billions in sales, millions in R&D and thousands in jobs. It demonstrates exactly why aerospace and defense are at the heart of the economy and why their success is crucial to our overall future economic prospects."

The AOS is surrounded by a shroud to eliminate stray light and two large radiator panels to keep the assembly cold. This subsystem collects and focuses the light from the secondary mirror and feeds it into the science instruments.
"Our teammates at Ball Aerospace have done an excellent job on all of the optical elements, including the testing and completion of the aft-optical system," said Scott Texter, Webb Optical Telescope Element manager for Northrop Grumman Aerospace Systems.
Since May 2012, the AOS has undergone a series of thermal, vibration and cryogenic testing to demonstrate that it can withstand the rigorous vibration environment of launch and remain precisely aligned to function at extremely cold temperatures in space. The system successfully completed all performance testing earlier this month.
"This was a unique technical challenge, requiring unprecedented fabrication and testing of the mirrors to ensure operation at the cryogenic temperature of 40 Kelvin," said Texter.
The AOS will remain at Ball Aerospace to be used in integrated testing with the flight actuator drive unit. The team will finish building the cryogenic electronics that control the mirrors and the source plate assembly that is used to test the complete Optical Telescope Element for the Webb Telescope.

Voluntary Field Correction Action Issued for GE Healthcare’s Resuscitation Systems with Blender, Installed in GE Giraffe and Panda Infant Warmers
GE Press Release:
Voluntary Field Correction Action Issued for GE Healthcare’s Resuscitation Systems with Blender, Installed in GE Giraffe and Panda Infant Warmers
January 31, 2013
LAUREL, Maryland, January 31 2013 ― On October 15, 2012, GE Healthcare initiated a voluntary field corrective action of the field upgrade kit for GE Healthcare’s resuscitation systems with blender, installed in GE Giraffe and Panda infant warmers.
The field upgrade kit for GE Healthcare’s resuscitation unit with blender, used with GE’s Giraffe and Panda infant warmers, may impact patient safety. The oxygen and air wall inlet fittings and/or labels on the back panel may have been reversed during assembly. As a result, this could potentially reverse the air/oxygen mixer concentrations; for example, a setting of 100% oxygen could have an output of 21% oxygen, and vice versa. The settings of the blender knob would no longer be accurate.
This voluntary field correction only impacts field upgrade kits for GE Healthcare’s resuscitation systems with blender, installed in GE’s Giraffe and Panda infant warmers. The affected resuscitation system upgrade kits were manufactured from April 2008 to September 2012.
GE Healthcare initiated the field correction on October 15, 2012, and began notifying customers with affected units through an Urgent Medical Device Correction letter, which provided instructions and illustrations to allow hospital personnel to conduct immediate inspection and mitigation, and follow up has been conducted to confirm their receipt of the letter. GE field service engineers have inspected units at approximately 89% of the identified customer sites. The remaining unconfirmed customers are being contacted and scheduled for inspection by GE field service technicians. To date, no patient injuries have been reported with this issue.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has classified this recall as a Class I recall. FDA defines Class I recalls as “a situation in which there is a reasonable probability that the use of or exposure to the violative product will cause serious adverse health consequences or death.”
