GE’s revolutionary red phosphor technology will now offer sharper, uncompromising color to GE licensees
EAST CLEVELAND, March 30, 2015—GE to manufacture TriGain™, GE’s family of enhanced potassium fluorosilicate (PFS) phosphors for use in LED-based display backlight applications. The TriGain family of phosphors offers improved narrow red band performance, resulting in reds that are sharper and cleaner, enabling richer picture quality and increasing the color gamut for backlit displays. Samples of TriGain may now be obtained from GE Lighting with production quantities available in mid-2015.
The “perfect red” has eluded LED display manufacturers, who must often choose between brightness and appearance. With TriGain, there is no need for compromise—reds are brighter and make other colors clearer, producing enhanced picture quality in LCD smartphones, tablets and TV’s. And, as only GE has the patents on the use of PFS phosphor in an LED package, the company has decided to manufacture and supply TriGain to complement the growing use by its licensees.
“This breakthrough was only possible through GE’s prevailing leadership in the advancement of LED technology,” said Jerry Duffy, GE Lighting Global Product General Manager. “Adding to the breakthrough is GE’s proprietary improvements to phosphor synthesis, including decreased particle sizes, higher quantum efficiencies and longer life when compared to standard PFS. Many devices currently on the market offer lower-quality red components in LED—what GE has achieved technically will turn the tide toward more vibrant color in a range of consumer electronics.”
Grounded in GE’s expertise and capability in material science, TriGain phosphors will be manufactured through GE’s proprietary processes at a Cleveland-based GE Lighting facility.

During his visit to Florida, yesterday, President Obama highlighted the University of Miami's Industrial Assessment Center (IAC) as a smart and important piece of the administration's "all-of-the-above" approach to domestic energy sources.

In September of last year, the Energy Department gave 24 universities a total of $30M in grants to help train the next generation of industrial energy-efficiency experts. Each school will receive $200,000 to $300,000 per year for up to 5 years to train students on core energy management concepts. The teams conduct energy assessments in a broad range of manufacturing facilities, which prepare students to compete in today's economy while helping local companies and factories reduce energy waste, save money, and become more competitive.

As President Obama said yesterday, "We're taking a step that will make it easier for companies to save money by investing in energy solutions that have been proven here at the University of Miami -- new lighting systems; advanced heating and cooling systems that can lower a company's energy bills and make them more competitive."

Since the Industrial Assessment Center program began in 1976, university teams have conducted more than 15,000 energy assessments at U.S. manufacturing plants nationwide. To date, more than 3,000 students have graduated from the Industrial Assessment Center program, with more than 60 percent going on to careers in the energy industry. Critically, these assessments have helped save over 530 trillion BTUs of energy -- enough to meet the energy needs of 5.5 million American homes -- and have helped participating manufacturers save more than $5.6 billion in energy costs.

Retailers Checking 'Nice' on Energy Savings List

Residential and commercial buildings account for a staggering 40 percent of energy use in the United States.

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and its National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) are working with the nation's commercial building owners to discover new and innovative ways to reduce commercial building energy use.

DOE's Commercial Building Partnerships (CBP) program is a public/private, cost-shared program that pairs selected commercial building owners with DOE's national laboratories and private-sector technical experts. The goal is challenging, yet simple: new commercial construction is designed to consume at least 50 percent less energy than today's code allows (ANSI/ASHRAE/IES Standard 90.1-2004), and retrofits are designed to consume at least 30 percent less energy.

The potential energy savings means a financial benefit for companies and consumers alike.

"An underlying idea with CBP is to demonstrate that energy efficiency makes good business sense," NREL Senior Engineer Greg Stark said. "We are helping the companies develop better stores that use significantly less energy than their current prototypes — and for roughly same cost as their current buildings."

Coming up with energy saving solutions that can be repeated throughout the U.S. is a key CBP goal.
