EPA announces Green Power Leadership Award winners - Renewable Energy From Waste

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announces its 16th annual Green Power Leadership Awards, recognizing 16 Green Power Partners across the country—including Apple, Cupertino, California;Cisco Systems, San Jose, California; Goldman Sachs, New York City; BNY Mellon, New York City;Jackson Family Wines, Santa Rosa, California; Kohl’s Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin; and the State University of New York (SUNY) Buffalo, Buffalo, New York –for achievements in advancing the nation’s renewable energy market and helping to reduce greenhouse gas emissions that contribute to climate change.

The award winners are being recognized for their efforts in expanding the domestic renewable energy market. From using enough green power to meet 100 percent of electricity needs to signing long-term contracts to enable new renewable energy projects, these organizations are demonstrating leadership by furthering the case for accessible, affordable green power use.

Western Disposal, a locally owned Boulder, Colorado-based company offering residential and commercial trash, recycling and composting services, has raised more than $1 million for Crayons to Calculators, an annual school supply drive benefitting students in the Boulder Valley and St. Vrain Valley public schools. The company raised the funds throughout the course of its nine-year partnership with Crayons to Calculators. Western Disposal’s annual Trash Bash event and generous donations from their partners Autocar, ShoCo Oil and Transwest Truck and Trailer helped reach the $1 million fundraising milestone.

Collection fatalities occur at rate of 3.17 per month - Renewable Energy From Waste

At least 98 fatalities directly related to municipal solid waste (MSW) collection, processing and disposal occurred in the U.S. between July 1, 2015 and June 30, 2016, according to data collected by the Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA).

Of the fatalities reported in that time period, 38 were solid waste employees on the job, a majority of which occurred during collection. However, 13 of the fatal worker incidents took place at a landfill or materials recovery facility (MRF). The average age of workers who died on the job was 41.7 years old, with 60 percent being over the age of 40.
