Founding Father of the Surfing Industry
Founding Father of the Surfing Industry
Sometimes, the right people are in the right place at the right time.
The February 3, 2014 print issue of Fortune magazine contains an interview (p. 23) by Dinah Eng of Hobie Alter, who pioneered the American surfing industry.
Mr. Alter spent much of his childhood bodysurfing at Laguna Beach, CA. In the 1940s, proper surfing existed in Hawaii, but was little-known in California.
Hobie Alter began building surfboards from balsa wood and fiberglass when he was 14 years old in his parents' garage.
Later, his father encouraged him to go into the surfboard business and to get a shop. From his parents' garage, Hobie had sold many surfboards. From a shop along the highway, he would be able to sell even more.
The strategy worked. Hobie's biggest challenge was keeping up with demand.
In 1957, Hobie began experimenting with using foam instead of balsa wood in his surfboards. After two years of experimentation, he was able to replace the balsa wood in his surfboards with foam.
Competitors were moving in, but in 1959 the movie Gidget boosted demand.
When skateboarding became hot in the 1960s, Hobie licensed his name to a skateboard company, while continuing to build his surfboard business.
Mr. Alter also started a separate catamaran company that built sailboats out of surfboard foam.
The final paragraph sums up Hobie Alter's story well:
I started selling surfboards 64 years ago, and I'm proud that we've been a leading surfboard manufacturer and catamaran manufacturer. We've survived and are still out there. Hobie has become a national name, and I got to build things I like.

WASHINGTON— Small businesses
that suffered economic losses when the owner or a key employee was called up to
active duty are eligible to apply for a low interest loan of up to $2 million
from the U.S. Small Business Administration.
Small businesses can apply for a Military
Reservist Economic Injury Disaster Loan (MREIDL) any time from the date of
notice of expected call-up and ending one year after the date of discharge or
release. The program was created to enable eligible small businesses to pay
operating expenses it could have covered if the owner or key employee hadn’t
been called to active duty.
“The absence of just one employee whose expertise
is critical to the success of the company can pose significant challenges for a
small business,” said SBA Acting Administrator Jeanne Hulit.
“These Military Reservist Economic Injury
Disaster Loans provide funds that will help these small businesses cover
operating expenses. This way our brave men and women in uniform don’t have to
choose between serving their country and growing their businesses.”
The MREIDL is a direct working capital loan,
managed by SBA’s Office of Disaster Assistance. The interest rate on these
working capital loans is 4 percent, with terms up to a maximum of 30 years. In
general, no collateral is required to secure an MREIDL of $50,000 or less. The
loan cannot be used to replace lost income or profits, refinance long-term debt
or to expand the business.
Businesses can apply online at http://go.usa.gov/BcuA. To get an application by
mail, or for other questions about the loan program, contact SBA’s Disaster
Assistance Customer Service Center at 800-659-2955 or by email at disastercustomerservice@sba.gov.
In addition to the MREIDL program, the SBA
supports veterans starting and growing their businesses through its 68
local SBA district offices, 15 Veterans Business Outreach Centers
nationwide, its partnership with 63 Small Business Development Centers (SBDCs)
with over 900 outreach locations, and 12,000 SCORE volunteers.
Each year SBA helps more than 200,000 veterans,
service-disabled veterans and reservists. To learn more about additional
opportunities for veterans available through the SBA, please visit the website
at www.sba.gov/veterans.

SBA Amends Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) And Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) Program Policy Directives
Small Business Administration News Release:
WASHINGTON – The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) has amended its Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) Program Policy Directives in response to public comments and input from all parties involved in the program. These amendments - - published on January 8, 2014 in the Federal Register - - can be found and reviewed at
https://federalregister.gov/a/2013-31374 for SBIR, and https://federalregister.gov/a/2013-31376 for STTR.
The SBIR Program Policy Directive makes several key changes to the SBIR Program relating to eligibility, the SBIR award process, SBIR Program administration, and fraud, waste and abuse. The changes to the STTR Program Policy Directive have been made to maintain concordance with the SBIR program. SBA also made several minor clarifying changes to ensure that the participants in both programs clearly understand certain program requirements.
On December 31, 2011, the President signed into law the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2012. That Act contained the SBIR/STTR Reauthorization Act of 2011, which amended the Small Business Act and made several amendments to the SBIR and STTR programs and required SBA to issue amendments to the Policy Directives and publish the amendment in the Federal Register. SBA did so on August 6, 2012.
SBA sought public comments on the final Directives, and stated that it may amend the Directives in response to these comments at a later time. This resulted in the January 2014 changes.

Union Pacific Improves Public Safety Performance in 2013
Union Pacific Press Release:

Union Pacific Improves Public Safety Performance in 2013
OMAHA, NEB., JANUARY 27, 2014
Union Pacific improved its public safety incident rate in 2013, demonstrating progress in enhancing safety for employees, customers and communities. The company's 2013 public safety incident rate was 2.22, a 7 percent improvement over the 2012 rate of 2.38.
Railroad public safety incident rates measure the total number of Federal Railroad Administration reportable crossing accidents per million train miles.
Union Pacific's integrated railroad safety outreach, enforcement and education efforts, and a paid advertising railroad safety campaign contributed to increased driver awareness and the reduction in public safety incidents.
"Improvements in public safety lead to safer operations for employees and communities, and greater reliability for our customers," said Bob Grimaila, vice president of Safety, Security and Environment at Union Pacific. "Though our public safety metric improved in 2013, the goal is always zero incidents, and by engaging employees and communities in railroad safety efforts, we move closer to this goal."
