Oracle Outlines Java Platform Advancements and Highlights Java Momentum in JavaOne 2013 Strategy Keynote

Java Platform, Standard Edition (Java SE) (See related news release: Oracle Highlights Java SE Momentum at JavaOne 2013)
Work on the Java SE 8 Specification and its official reference implementation, JDK 8, is proceeding as planned with availability expected in March 2014.
JDK 8 was feature complete as of build 94, promoted on June 13, 2013 and the JDK 8 Developer Preview builds are now available.
The key features of Java SE 8 and JDK 8 are Project Lambda (JSR 335), the Nashorn JavaScript Engine, a new Date and Time API (JSR 310), a set of Compact Profiles and the removal of the “permanent generation” from the HotSpot Java Virtual Machine (JVM).
Freescale, Linaro and Square have recently joined the OpenJDK Community, which continues to thrive with contributions from Oracle, as well as other companies, researchers and individuals.
The OpenJDK Community infrastructure also continues to improve, increasing transparency and making collaboration more efficient. The OpenJDK Wiki was made available this past April and the new JDK Bug System was just launched last week.
Java Platform, Micro Edition (Java ME) and Java Embedded Technologies (See related news release: Oracle Updates Roadmap for Next Generation Java ME Platform)
Plans for Java ME 8 are moving forward with availability expected in conjunction with the release of Java SE 8 Specification and JDK 8, its official reference implementation, in March, 2014.
Java ME 8 is a major update to the existing Java ME platform incorporating a large set of updated and new features, including: Java language and API alignment with Java SE 8, support for modern web protocols, a comprehensive application model, advanced security features and standard APIs for power management and interaction with a broad set of standard peripherals.
Oracle Java ME Embedded 8 will be the Oracle implementation of the Java ME 8 standard. Oracle Java ME Embedded 8 Early Access is now available as a binary runtime for Raspberry Pi Model B (ARM11) and ST Microelectronics STM32F4DISCOVERY (ARM Cortex-M4).
Java ME SDK 8 Early Access is now available to support development of Java ME 8 Early Access-based applications on an emulation runtime for Windows 7, as well supported hardware platforms.
In addition, Oracle Java ME Embedded 3.4 is now available. This is an incremental update to Oracle Java ME Embedded that provides enhanced support for the Qualcomm Technologies’ QSC6270T chipset and adds advanced development and serviceability capabilities.
The Oracle Java Platform Integrator program gives partners the ability to customizeOracle Java ME Embedded and Oracle Java SE Embedded to reach different device types and market segments.
On June 12, 2013, Oracle and the Java Community Process (JCP) members announced the availability of Java Platform, Enterprise Edition 7 (Java EE 7) and the Java EE 7 Software Development Kit (SDK). View the Java EE 7 launch webcast and technical videos on demand.
The standard in community-driven enterprise software, Java EE 7 is the result of industry-wide development involving open review, ongoing builds and extensive collaboration between hundreds of engineers from more than 30 companies within the JCP and theGlassFish Community.
Java EE 7 features a scalable infrastructure that facilitates building HTML5 applications with WebSockets, JSON and RESTful Web Services with JAX-RS 2.0; further increases developer productivity; and delivers new features that meet the most demanding enterprise requirements, such as breaking down batch jobs into manageable chunks for uninterrupted OLTP performance.

Oracle has provided Make the Future Java EE 7 Tool Kits, with technical content and promotional items, enabling Java User Group (JUG) leaders to host more than 100 engaging, inspiring and educational events in 47 countries.
Oracle is also announcing it is releasing the source code for Project Avatar at:http://avatar.java.net. Project Avatar is a framework for HTML5 development with rich data binding capabilities that leverages WebSockets, RESTful extensions and Server-Sent Events (SSE), extending Java EE application servers by adding support for JavaScript services running on popular frameworks like node.js.
