Cerner Corp. was ranked No. 13 in the competition from a field of more than 200 companies.
“We’re thrilled to be recognized as a LearningElite organization. We view our people as a competitive advantage and key differentiator in the market, so ensuring they are the best they can be is a very high priority for Cerner.  We believe we have created a learning and development capability at Cerner that is innovative, agile, and highly effective.  As a result, our associates have the knowledge and skills to make a difference in improving healthcare every day,” said Rob Campbell, vice president and Chief Learning Officer with Cerner.
Developed under the guidance of chief learning officers and senior workforce development practitioners, the CLO LearningElite is the only peer-based benchmarking initiative in the industry. “In our third year of benchmarking workforce learning and development practices, competition was intense. The organizations that achieved LearningElite status stood out as true innovators in enterprise education — noteworthy for their unswerving commitment to deploying elite L&D practices that deliver measurable business value,” said Sarah Kimmel, director of research and advisory services for the Human Capital Media Advisory Group, a component of the magazine’s publisher, MediaTec Publishing. “The LearningElite’s incisive analysis yields solid data that validates the impact these organizations’ learning initiatives have on productivity, engagement, innovation and, ultimately, business results.”

UnitedHealthcare Honors Employers for Outstanding Worksite Wellness Programs
  • Fifth annual "Well Deserved" award recognizes 16 organizations' commitment to wellness and encouraging their employees to take an active role in their health and well-being

MINNETONKA, Minn. (Mar. 28, 2013) —
UnitedHealthcare has presented 16 organizations with the “Well Deserved” award for 2012, an annual honor given to employers who demonstrate an exceptional commitment to helping their employees improve their health and well-being by investing in worksite wellness programs.
Among the 2012 winners, five organizations have won the “Well Deserved” award three times. In recognition of these organizations’ long-term commitment to employee health and well-being, UnitedHealthcare presented them with a Leadership Award to honor this multiyear distinction. Leadership Award winners include:
  • City of Arlington, Texas
  • City of Austin, Texas
  • Shamrock Foods Company, Phoenix, Ariz.
  • State of Rhode Island
  • Texas Mutual Insurance Company, Austin, Texas
Four organizations have won the “Well Deserved” award twice and were presented with a Golden Apple Award:

Chronic diseases – such as heart disease, stroke, cancer, diabetes and arthritis – are among the most common, costly and preventable health problems. The use of effective workplace programs and policies may reduce health risks and improve the quality of life for millions of people across the United States, while reducing health care costs to individuals and employers, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
More businesses are adopting wellness programs as a way to help improve employee health and productivity, reduce absenteeism, build a culture of health within their organization and better manage health care costs. Wellness Councils of America estimates that a $1 investment in a comprehensive wellness program saves an average of $3 to $5 in health care costs.
“This year’s ‘Well Deserved’ award winners are leaders in improving the health of their employees and their families while reducing health care costs,” said Carol Calvin, RN, MS, CPQH, national director of UnitedHealthcare Health and Wellness. “These employers are empowering their employees to make positive health care decisions by providing innovative and creative ways to encourage a healthy lifestyle. It’s an honor to recognize their notable achievements.”
The “Well Deserved” award program was designed to recognize employer customers that have implemented successful wellness programs and to reinforce UnitedHealthcare’s mission of helping people live healthier lives. An external broker review panel reviewed and judged the applicants.

“Project Runway” Contestants Use HP and Intel Technology to Incorporate Structure and Art into Fashion Design

Press Release: March 29, 2013

“Project Runway” Contestants Use HP and Intel Technology to Incorporate Structure and Art into Fashion Design

HP ENVY x2 and fine art provide inspiration for pattern-making challenge; new design contest encourages fans to create
PALO ALTO, Calif. — HP showcased its innovative technology on last night’s episode of “Project Runway,” the popular, long-running hit show on Lifetime.
This season marks five consecutive seasons of HP and Intel support, further demonstrating the role that technology can play in the creative arts.
With a heavy focus on pattern making, “The Art of Fashion” episode began at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum’s exhibit, “Art of Another Kind: International Abstraction and the Guggenheim, 1949-1960.” The “Project Runway” teams were instructed to use the iconic Frank Lloyd Wright designed museum, its exhibits and the ultrathin HP ENVY x2 as inspiration for two designs: one groundbreaking, avant-garde piece and one ready-to-wear garment. Designers also used HP TouchSmart desktop PCs with Intel® CoreTM processors to create unique textile patterns for the challenge.
“The Guggenheim’s ingenious design has served as a creative spark for artists of all stripes since its opening in 1959,” said Chris Bohrer, director, Worldwide Consumer PC Marketing, HP. “The use of HP technology, like the ENVY x2 laptop that converts to a tablet, to inspire the talented designers on Fashion Runway is just one example of how technology and the arts are inextricably linked.”
“I wanted my textile and garments to pay homage to Frank Lloyd Wright’s absolute fearlessness in his approach to museum design, and to the unfettered creativity of the exhibits the Guggenheim showcases,” said challenge winner Stanley Hudson. “Using the HP products enabled me to create such a pioneering design.”
Fan contest
The annual HP and Intel “Project Runway” pattern-making challenge has become a signature episode and a fan favorite.
This season, HP and Intel are inviting viewers to create gallery boards that showcase their personal style with inspiration from the show, for a chance to win new HP PCs, cash and prizes. Fans can share and submit their boards at www.HP/projectrunway.com, and fashion insiders from FashionIndieTRENDLAND and BRIT + Co. will serve as the contest judges.
The contest will begin on April 4, with judging taking place from April 24 to May 8. Each board should feature a minimum of five items, including one design for an HP UltrabookTM. The winner will be announced by mid-May.

IBM Master The Mainframe Contest Prepares Students With In Demand IT Skills For A Smarter Planet

IBM News Release:

IBM Master The Mainframe Contest Prepares Students With In Demand IT Skills For A Smarter Planet

Over 4,600 students compete from US and Canada
Poughkeepsie, N.Y. - 29 Mar 2013: Throughout the last 49 years, the IBM (NYSE: IBM) mainframe has advanced, anticipating both the present and future needs of businesses.Organizations are moving more cloudmobilebig data and analytics computing projects on to mainframes and joining them with traditional projects like transaction processingoperational analytics and database management to develop solutions that can empower a Smarter Planet. Because of these trends, today's mainframes are growing in popularity, requiring a new generation of mainframe experts.
IBM’s Master the Mainframe Contest, part of the company’s Academic Initiative, equips high school and college students with the basic skills needed to make them more competitive in the job market. This year's contest, which drew over 4,600 students from the US and Canada, was the largest turnout for IBM in North America since its 2005 inception.  The three-part contest serves as an introduction to programming and application development and requires no initial mainframe experience. As students complete each part of the contest, judges evaluate their results and reward those who move on to the next step. Each phase gets considerably harder as students progress, beginning with basic mainframe navigation to completing a project that tackles a real-world business scenario.
This year’s top three contest winners are:
1st place: Miles NoslerTexas State University
2nd place: Benjamin Paul, Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology
3rd place: Sushain CheriviralaDulles High School

In addition to the contest introducing new IT skills, IBM helps students job search by connecting them with industry-related jobs posted on Systemzjobs.com. The job board is a resource to link IBM System z clients and partners with students learning the mainframe and professionals seeking System z job opportunities. To date, more than 4,300 job seekers have registered. Systemzjobs.com regularly features over 1,000 mainframe-related jobs.
“Learning with the latest enterprise technology and studying real-world scenarios helps my students gain market-ready skills before they graduate,” said William Cunningham, faculty member, Nova Scotia Community College. “Last year, one of my graduates landed a job based on his participation in the Master the Mainframe contest.”
According to the 2012 IBM Tech Trend Report, as business demand for emerging technologies such as mobile, big data and analytics, social business and cloud rise, enterprises are facing an increased IT skills shortage. The report showed that only one out of ten organizations surveyed had the skills needed to implement these advanced technologies, with roughly one-quarter of those reporting major skill gaps, and 60 percent or more stating moderate to major shortfalls.
IBM’s Enterprise Systems Education Program has been working closely with academic institutions worldwide to communicate the industry’s skills requirements and create new enterprise computing programs (minors, concentrations, and certificate programs) in an ongoing effort to educate and encourage students to enter the enterprise systems field. IBM’s Master the Mainframe Contest provides educators with an interesting way to increase enrollment and reinforce the skills their students are learning in these new programs.
“The fantastic turnout by students and difficult challenges set by our IBM technical experts made this our toughest contest yet,” said Michael Todd, team leader, IBM Master the Mainframe contest. “All of the student competitors deserve special recognition for their extraordinary accomplishments, and we hope they will continue to use the skills they’ve learned to help organizations build their big data, cloud, and mobile computing projects.”
The IBM Master the Mainframe contest, now in its 8th year, reaches 33 countries, with new countries such as Austria, India, Poland and Spain added each year.  The 2012 contests drew a total of 13,813 students globally. For further information, please go to IBM Master the Mainframe Contest 2012 or the Master the Mainframe Facebook page.
IBM’s Academic Initiative provides more than 30,000 higher education professionals with no charge access to enterprise software, curriculum and teaching materials to help students gain advanced IT skills.

U.S. Chamber Hosts 12th Annual Aviation Summit

Examines Challenges Impacting the Efficiency and Growth of Airlines
WASHINGTON, D.C.—The U.S. Chamber of Commerce held its 12th Annual Aviation Summit today gathering top experts and leaders from all sectors of aviation to discuss critical issues facing the industry. The event examined many of the challenges impacting the efficiency and growth of airlines, including rising fuel prices, onerous environmental regulations, runway availability, and the implementation of the NextGen air traffic modernization program.
“Aviation is an essential mode of transportation that can both quickly and efficiently move people and goods around the United States and the world,” said U.S. Chamber President and CEO Thomas J. Donohue. “A strong federal role is essential for safety, oversight, and air traffic efficiency. Necessary maintenance and modernization investments must be made to renew and upgrade aging aviation infrastructure, and to preserve America’s role as a leader in aviation.”
The summit kicked off with a one-on-one discussion between Donohue and W. James McNerney, Jr., the chairman, president, and CEO of The Boeing Company. Other panel discussions focused on manufacturing, future trends in aviation, and airport efficiency.
“The welfare of the U.S. aviation system is of critical importance to the economy because it facilitates the movement of goods and people through commercial, business, and private travel,” said Carol Hallett, of Counsel at the U.S. Chamber. “The Chamber continues to advocate for federal policies that recognize the vital link between America’s aviation industry and jobs, economic development, global competitiveness, national security, and quality of life.”
More than 30 senior aviation executives participated in the day-long summit including W. Douglas Parker, chairman and CEO of US Airways Group, Jeffery A. Smisek, president and CEO of United Continental Holdings Inc., Frederick W. Smith, chairman, president, and CEO of FedEx, David J. Barger, president and CEO of JetBlue Airways Corporation, The Honorable T. Allan McArtor, chairman of Airbus Americas and many more.
The U.S. Chamber of Commerce is the world’s largest business federation representing the interests of more than 3 million businesses of all sizes, sectors, and regions, as well as state and local chambers and industry associations.
